Bonsailelong, instead of cutting off the top3 levels, can i do an air layering, once the roots grow then i cut it off, then i will have another hokkien bonsai...LOL. i have never try air layering before, i read about it, i wanna try it, can you give me tips ? how long will the roots appears to grow?
will air layering affects the main tree? what soil mix do i need for air layering?? wah so many questions... hope you dun mind..tqvm.

thumbup.gif

Air Layering.

The soil material that I always use.

Wrigthia Religiosa - "shui Mui"

Attached Image Attached Image The trunk is approx 1" in diameter, the upper part of approx 8" will be just fine for an informal upright style.

Attached Image Clean up the part going to be "de-bark".

Attached Image Give a clean cut, don't leave connection between upper & lower barks.

Attached Image Brush on rooting hormones.

Attached Image Use transparent plastic sheet so that when new roots grows out,can be seen.

Attached Image Put in the soil, don't tie too tied at the top part so that can water, and always keep the soil moist.

Attached Image Done. Cover from the sun

If successful, new roots should emerge in 2 months, probably can cut and transplant in 3 months pending on how fast the roots grow.

'Peat Moss Cultivated Soil' is the same.
The most important point is the soil or moss around the "de-barked" area must keep
moist or wet most of the time.

zabel8484.... you are very lucky to have bonsai sifu to give you hands-on ... rclxms.gif  thumbup.gif

Added on January 3, 2013, 3:01 pmSince i am into bonsai, i have not gone for overseas holidays, cos there is no one to help me water the bonsai everyday... sweat.gif
So i am planning to get an automated watering system to do the job while i am await for a week or two.
Do you guys think these automated watering system will work or not?? I dun want to come back after two weeks all my bonsai dried off.. cry.gif

Please share if you have comments on these. BTW how you all water your bonsai if you are away from home for a couple of days?  shocking.gif
*
I got a neighbour helping me to water my bonsai while I was away.
But still I got to put all of the pots together under the shade in difference groups so to enable watering work can be easily done.
And got to buy a good present when I returned.

In your case, if no neighbour available, auto sprinkle water system should be fine. But got to group all your pots together and test out before leaving.

Maybe you should think of sending all your bonsai to a plant nursery where the owner is willing to take care for you for a cheaper price.

Potting a Jude plant - Botanical name known as Portulaca Oleracea.

This Jude plant has been neglected in one corner of the garden for quite some times.
but it has grown up to a size and natural semi cascading style that make me decided to transfer it to a pot. hmm.gif

A healthy, succulent plant. Will let it grows in this pot for sometimes before changing to a tall thin bonsai pot.

Hi G400x2

First I would like to congrats you that you have found a very big "shui mui" stump which is very rare.
But secondly, I would like to say if you keep that stump in that manner, you are going to drown and kill it.

Any plant with big stump like that should be able to grow again.
I suggest you make some hole in the bottom of that plastic paint drum and change the soil to the normal planting soil.

Here is my suggestion

Attached Image cut away the marked part and cut the plastic drum lower and keep it in half sunlight condition.

Good Luck to your "treasure"!

Went to San Fong Bonsai yesterday on my way home from work.
Spent sometimes appreciating the bonsai and bonsai materials there.
There are real awesome stuffs in there and the prices are " awesome" too!
I particularly like the casurina tree materials but unfortunately no photos are allowed but not outside the nursery.

Here's the casurina trees for sharing

Hi Zabel

Hope you don't mind I suggest that you shouldn't use the " black" soil shown in your photo.
It's actually "longkang" soil, if you wash the "black" soil with water, you can understand what I mean.

Ask for the coconut fiber black soil next time, it should look like this

Hi Zabel,
If you're going to San Fong don't forget to buy some wire, the 1.15mm and some 2 mm size are needed if you want to start misho bonsai.

i would like to buy lime sulfur as a pesticide for my bonsai but, when i go to my local nursery to ask, they don't have a clue what's that...!!!!
the 'tau keh' say they have only melathion pesticide, can that be use on our bonsai trees?

guys, can help post photo of lime sulfur bottle so that i can look around in my local area for it.
*
thumbup.gif

I think Zabel should be able to help, because the last time I bought the sulphur lime solution is from Ho Min Yuen Melaka.
Till now, the sticker on the bottle has faithed. So can't show any photo.

Bonsailelong,

thanks so much for the advice, I'll get the wires.
need ur opinion on this, I want to get a pot for the serissa u gave me. I can't seem to imagine what shape would be suitable for this serissa. Any idea?

thumbup.gif

HI Zabel,

Apologize for giving you a serrisa in a very young stage.
I think you can understand the reason, the rain was too heavy that day and I just simply grabbed one at the far corner of my garden and gave it to you. blush.gif
If not I should have choose and give a better one.
I give a suggestion to that young serrisa.
Don't be hurry to plant it in a bonsai pot but plant it in a much much bigger pot and let it grows bigger.
Trim the foliage round. Serrisa can has the stem grown up to 1 to 1.5 ins in diameter. (Maybe in 2 years time.)

Hope this one can give you the idea.
