my 'hokkien tree' the tree trunk have cut wounds, which looks like rotting, how do i preserve it, and prevent it from rotting. Thanks

That is the common characteristic of cheap Fukien Tea from China.
The cuts and scars that can never grow back.
You can try scrapping off the rotten part, treat with sulfur lime solution and brush and cover
with a layer bituminous compound to prevent water from entering the woody part of the stem.

Zabel

You are doing very well.
However the is quite gap between the apex and the first branch.
you can bend the lower branch up as suggested, this is not only make it
look balance but also shorten it.

A TRIP TO " HO MIN YUEN"

First of all I would like to correct a mistake which is unintentionally make all the time.

Attached Image

It's "MIN HOE YUEN" BONSAI NURSERY. We got it "up side down" blush.gif

This is my Melaka bonsai buddy - young, dyminic, enterprising and full of potential. rclxms.gif

Attached Image

Min Ho Yuen bonsai nursery was actually on a single piece of land of approx. 5 acres.
A Pokok Mangga double lanes drive way was built cutting right through it and now it's divided
into 2 sections.
I visited the first section of Min Ho Yuen under the guide of my buddy Zabel. Accroding to him this is the place
where we can actually buy some materials of reasonable prices. So we move on...

Attached Image A welcome gazebo at the entrance.

Lots of old and gigantic junipers

Attached Image West Indian Cherry

Attached Image Cascading Juniper Precumben.

Attached Image Some young black pine. Not sure is Japan or China?

After buying 2 nos of young black pine, a round lotus pot and a bottle of bark growing hormone, we process
to the second section of Min Hoe Yuen.
This is a "must" visit section.

Attached Image The entrance, looks nothing extra ordinary. ohmy.gif

Once enter, it's another world.... shocking.gif drool.gif

And hundreds of "shui mui"

If your are looking for large and gigantic bonsai materials, this s the place.
If you have a big garden and look for bonsai style landscape materials, this is definitely the place. icon_rolleyes.gif

A VISIT TO MIN HOE YUEN - "Forwards"

After making an appointment with my Melaka bonsai buddy to meet the next morning at
a place beside a supermarket early in the morning, I started my journey down and arrived
at the appointed location a little earlier, and at that moment the call of mother nature was high,
and so I just parked my car beside the super-mart and answer to the "high" call at the toilet of the mart.
It took about 3 mins+ and I came out....

Attached Image ...alamak ! a rm 100 parking summon !

The MPMB parking officer was still around, and so I asked him why he issued me such an expensive summon,
I went off for a short while just to go to toilet only. Without speaking a words, he shown me the double yellow lines just beside my car.
I can't argue anymore and just drove my car to a parking lot nearby.
Immediately I moved my car, another 2 cars moved in and parked at the same location that I have just parked.

Attached Image .. and the people left their cars and enter the super-mart.
The MPMB car parking officer was there, just looked on. At this instant I just can't tolerated anymore
and I walked over and asked the officer why these cars were not issued summons and only issued mine.
This fellow, he just ignored me and walked away and disappeared himself at a corner of the building.
When I looked at the 2 cars, they are Melaka plates. Then I began to realize..... hmm.gif
Do Melaka cars have special privileges ? Definitely - NO!
I think this MPMB officer is waiting for the car owners to come out and ask for coffee money for not issuing
summons to their cars, as for mine, I'm from oustation, so he give me the most expensive summon to show
his superior that he is doing his job! vmad.gif mad.gif mad.gif vmad.gif

SO, THIS IS ONE MALAYSIA ! OR ONE MELAKA? vmad.gif vmad.gif vmad.gif

I don't know how's the costs of things over in East M'sia.
But Fukien Tea of tree trunk that size will only costs rm 30-35 over here.

On the other hand, Bonsai is a good hobby and well known world wide.
My "old lady" never nag on me when come to buying bonsai because I've
make her understand that when compare to alcohol, gambling or like somebody (worse case)
go for China Doll not China bonsai.
But when I put my hand on my bonsai, I must finish the job and forget about time and meal
and so I always get yelling from the house " wanna take dinner or just eat your bonsai!" mad.gif

My newly bought babies - Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii)

Bought these 2 black pines from Min Hoe Yuen a day ago.
The sifu there couldn't tell is Japanese or Chinese but for sure is a pine specie. icon_idea.gif

[attachmentid=3311255]

I was told the trees had already in our country since Oct 2011. That means these trees
should have got used to our climate here. (Hopefully.... wink.gif )
The packing of these trees are difference, the expensive material called geog-textile membrane which
usually used in separation of earth and aggregates in retaining wall back filling were used.

[attachmentid=3311261]

These trees are just straight, too straight and I just can't wait to do an initial shaping to them.
However, there're some real hard bending involved.
Some protections got to be done to the bending points.

[attachmentid=3311273] [attachmentid=3311274]

[attachmentid=3311275] ...wire up.... and bend rclxms.gif

[attachmentid=3311277] [attachmentid=3311278] I guess this is for the time been or I may lose another rm200.

With the packing removed, the whole original soil with roots are put in a bigger pot and buried with sand and coconut fiber
black soil mix (1:1). Hope I'm right and not kiss my rm 200 and say bye bye! cry.gif

G400,

you figured out how to bring home the bonsais?
*
thumbup.gif

Hi G400x2,

Since San Fong can send bonsai by courier services, they sure know how to pack
in such a way with minimum damage to the tree during handling process.
If you plan to take the bonsai you bought up the plane yourself, then you must figure out
how you can bring them up to the sardine packed commuter (train) from Kajang back to KL sentral.
or you might rclxub.gif cry.gif

Hi Oldkidz,

Welcome ! rclxms.gif

Just a little suggestion for beginner, go to the nursery observe how's the conditions of the plants are kept.
If your place have almost of such condition, then buy... and like zabel said keep the plant alive in your environment is the first lesson to be learnt.
No bonsai book and bonsai expert has taught this fundamental basic to beginners, and many people who try to start with the hobby found that
their tree die without knowing the reason and eventually give up.

Good luck kidz!

Went to Sanfong on my way home today, looked around for about 20 mins and bought some wires.
On my way out, saw this tree that Zabel has bought.
Wanna know it's name?
It's called Taiwan sweet cherry, a specie belongs to the Prunus family.
Unlike The West Indian cherry which is sour, this Taiwan cherry is sweet.
