Didn't know is spoil till went home tested and fail.
DS109j is cheaper, but rarely available.
Nvm, upgraded to DS110j and using it happily  smile.gif

DS109j rarely available cause no more pruduction liau and replace by DS110j. Even I brought the DS409+ is going stop too. I quickly grab 1 cause I get it very cheap and new 1 sure price not cheap. Beside this model can mod the ram.

FTP no problem at all. I always use FTP to transfer file. Best to instal a FTP program.

Lately I found out that I can transfer and view my file using PDA. Last time cannot.

Anyone use custom build NAS around here?

My 500Gb HD suddenly can't be detected (already send for warranty and hopefully only firmware problem) and probably I will lost all the data. So to avoid any traumatic experiences in the future, I planning to get more than 1 hd and raid them. But I see that 2 bays NAS is expensive and lack of expandability.

I have one unused DQ45CB mobo, 2 x 2Gb ddr2 ram and casing so I think will be better if I build custom NAS from these unused items than buying a proper NAS. I know custom NAS consume more power so what is the best processor suit for this build?

Added on March 5, 2010, 11:43 pmOr the new Atom is the better? But it only support 2 sata.
*
Custom NAS should be ok if you are not running 7/11. Otherwise consume power alot. Use a low voltage and low speed proccesor.

You can buy a raid card to slot to expand your raid HDD. I ve a raid card which can raid 4pcs HDD. Using it 9yrs already and still good now.

What the expected price for the raid card. If like that, probably will opt to atom  setup which use minimal power.
*
I m not sure what is the price now. Last time I brought cost me rm200. The famous raid card is rocket raid brand I guess.

Look for old low speed proccessor should be ok too. Cheaper ma. NAS no need high speed proccessor. 90% is sleeping. Unless you use it as pc too.

Use atom processor ?? But custom NAS consume more electric then Synology NAS
*
Yes. it consume more. That is why if you run 24hr, not practical. The 4bay synology NAS is just use 56watt when full load. Compare pc NAS power supply 250watt.

I think for atom it will not reach 250w but around 100 and below because NAS doesn't use so much energy. But true, proper NAS will be more nergy efficient than custom.
*
The power consume not just the proccessor. The mobo, ram, HDD, card and fan. All this add up will consume more than your proccessor. And your power supply heat and efficeincy will take some watt too.

Yeah, Synology also is expensive for me. Most low cost I believe only support 1 HD if I'm not mistaken. I need at least 2 bays and NAS with 2 bays is far more expensive. In the future if I need to add another HD, I have to buy another NAS. So that's why I plan to build custom NAS but the problem is with the energy consumption. Either way, it will cost money. I wonder why the price is so much expensive?  rclxub.gif

How much is your budget to custom build the NAS?

Well, maybe you can look for others brand. Like dlink or linksys or china brand. Those 2bay NAS cost not more than rm600. Cousume less power and cheap. Just don't ask for more function will do.

Electric bill won't cost that much. Max running only rm40/mth. But add up a yrs will cost rm480. Use this rm480 add up can buy a 2bay synology NAS. hmm.gif

I also think about that. But it is really can reach Rm40/month? RM40/month for only running a custom build NAS, that really high. With my current pc spec (see my sig), my electric bill increase RM30/month when running 24/7. That's why thinking of reduce the bill with the NAS (with torrent function). But if it really can reach RM40/month, should be stick to my current spec la...
*
My calculation is base on running max 250w/hr. Which will come to 6kw/day and 180kw/mth. From TNB tariff, that will cost rm40/mth max. Of course your custom NAS won't run max whole day. Depend your software setup and hardware qty.

And do remember TNB tariff discount is for first 200kw. Your home consume more than that.

Last time, I use laptop to dl torrent 24/hr whole yrs. It consume less power which max only 90w. (base on the adaptor spec). Cheaper alot compare pc.

You can get it at ebay if you want cheaper. But you need to find a way to get it here for free or lower courier fee.
