HP Microserver N40L (RM599) & N54L (RM749).

The probox is just an external case NO OS which means its no different from buying a USB box for your hard drive but this supports 4 or even 8 too.

QUOTE(mintgadget @ Aug 16 2013, 02:24 PM)
Yes HP Microserver is a normal PC

AC Ryan already have an USB Host Controller so will work with the Pro box (plug and play).
*
HP Microserver does not come with OS.. just a note.

Anybody can suggest me NAS that is cheap and reliable so I can transfer file even if I am outside and use it to play file on my media player with using wireless? One more, If I have NAS on my house A and have a media player on my house B, can I play the movie using the media player from house A and NAS from house B? Sorry, just started to learn about NAS
*
I may have another suggestion, just grab a normal NAS, subscribe a high speed broadband (UNIFI?) with high upload speed, and of course your mobile device must have good wireless Internet connectivity to be able to enjoy the speed.
You should be able to stream just as normal video from any website, as NAS probably has some media streaming features built-in.

Another case is you want to share your media centre (house A) with your media player (house B), may I know which of this option describe between your house A and house B?
1. Your house A and house B is just next to each other, or easily within sight, within 30 meters.
2. Your house A is much further away from house B, more than 50 meters.

For 1) Wireless N bridge is your solution, might be expensive but you can actually share to even your neighbours provided only 1 or 2 streams it at the same time. This is even easier if house A and house B just next to a wall, just provide short outdoor LAN cable link to each device and you're set to go.
2) Slightly tedious as you might spend more on wireless solution, good directional antenna is expensive unless you willing to fork them out. sweat.gif There's another solution if both house is really far away, UNIFI could be another solution, with the unlimited bandwidth still impose.

All of these require some form of set-up and little knowledge to network solution. Or just cut all the chase and bring huge external HDD. whistling.gif

Hi guys, just got into this whole NAs thing last week, and poisoned already! drool.gif
So Im planning to get a ready made one, not so pro like you guys ler, maybe the DS231+, or the Thecus N2520. Buffalo 421e quite nice too but seems to be a lil on the simple side, doesnt even have hard dsik spin down feature, so its either those two since QNAP firmware fells so-so only baesd on forums.

But one thing Im really not getting after going thru forums, lets say I get a NAS, and have 1080p MKVs on it, set SMB on it, then have my droid phone to use an explorer app like ES File explorer to access the NAS, will the 1080p file actually have issues playing? because currently when I play from my PC network share to my phone, its fine and also when played thru my laptop to my phone thru SMB.

Isnt the work being done on the phone and not the NAS? because Im not planning to use Plex, so the FreeScale processor is fine with me, and it seems transcoding is a "heavy" thing even for Atom.

So, basically, will 1080p MKV file streaming have issues with a 1k ready made NAS? thx in advance

You are right. The decoding is done by the phone provided is an android phone, no issues but iDevices cannot thus requires transcoding from say Plex server so that is right "format" to be played on it. Get Synology DS213 which fits your budget and its good enough for smb playback.

Hmm, thats weird because using my iTouch 5 I could use SMB on certain video players available on the app store, but then again, they are not as reliable as plex though, so I guess you are right.

Went and see the difference between the 213 and 213+, minimal difference with just the main difference in the type of CPU, so the 213 is a better buy, at least I still have the choice of Plex with it lol.

But, I accidentally found this while googling drool.gif

http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=200&t=69761

The atom CE5300 is said to be able to transcode multiple video files at once, so it sounds pretty enticing hmm.gif

I wonder when did the 213 enter our market? thing is it was available since August last year internationally, so the 214 may be launched anytime soon sweat.gif

guys, noob question here. i'm plan to share/stream movies, photos, etc inside my house for my lappy and phone. at first i look at WD Book Live (about rm400++) and also Dlink DNS-320 (rm900 with 2x2tb disk)..

but i noticed dlink wireless ac (e.g: dir 820) also can do the same things. what i need to do, just plug the external disk through USB and i can share all my files through the network.

please advise...

I believe the "transcode" could have means it's able to stream multiple video files without actually lag, could also means the speed is quick enough to provide multi users access without much bottleneck, this is great under heavy business network environment where network accessibility is the working nature.

Dlink DIR-820 is totally different from DNS-320.
DIR-820 is a wireless router, provide USB storage capability but the limit is the USB speed, possibly the best is only USB2.
DNS-320 is pure NAS capability, all things about NAS can do beside just sharing.
If you only needs to access the files through USB, does not mind the speed, then you can opt for the DIR-820 to access your USB storage. NAS can do more just file sharing, you can read through the capabilities by Google search. (Not to spoon feed but I'm kinda lazy to list it out)

Yup its great with all those 3rd party apps. All the stuff is grabbing "AUTOMATICALLY" and labeled, poster and organize with another app such as prowl it even notifies you on your mobile when stuff gets in.

Use your PC to handle Plex it can access your NAS than is absolutely a MEDIA JUKEBOX.

Synology has Video station which is surprisingly good too. Check that out.

yup, using my PC and laptop now but not really liking the idea of such a big power guzzling thing for media streaming, which is where this NAS comes in smile.gif

but I would definitely be using the other functions like the cloud station and also remote accessing of the NAS. I would also like to set the download location for anything from my PC and the laptop to certain folders in the NAS, so I wont have to replace the paltry 1TB on my PC rclxms.gif

Yeah, saw the Video station app, looks good on android, and has very good rating too! IF it works really well, I can just get the DS213 now and be done with it, but I am a little worried if I ever feel like the NAS is underpowered for something I might try in the near future as I learn how to use more and more of the features.

So I think its good to wait for the x14 series and see how it is, because there is a very nice hardware upgrade across all ranges with this new series biggrin.gif

Usenet cost about RM300 a year, not too bad if it REALLY works as advertised(honestly the way its look, have you tried before? hmm.gif

To be honest I love my Synology best investment ever but I got the plus series, a bit costlier hence no lag at all. As for the DS 213, if you can afford a bit more I strongly recommend the 4 bay version, coz you would want to run SHR aka Raid 5 which you lose 1 disk but with data protection. Been on Usenet for years, prefer it to torrent as always get full speed.

So you using a DS41x+? Nice! yeah, SHR seems to be a good format with some perks, if I get the 2 bay one, I will put mirror a 3TB drive. For 4 bay, the only real hurdle is footprint. Its kinda big, coz Im gonna put this on the living room beside the TV lol. The 2 bay ones look good and are very tiny.

As for the Usenet, care sharing which Usenet are you subscribing to? how about the search index? Heard there are paid version of those too smile.gif

thanks for clarification. so if i just want to share/stream documents (photos/videos) between one laptop, two smartphone it's better just take wireless router with usb port right.
it's mean dir-820 equivalent/similar with airport extreme or WD Mybook Live right...

But it really feels like you would be better off with an asus router, their NAS feature is pretty darn good. I actually thought of making what you are thinking of at first, so I checked out the features of their router. After looking at the features a real NAS has, I am constantly reminded of the features I saw on the Asus router rclxms.gif

I would say from my brief knowledge of all of this stuff, the only real issue is that transfer rate will be slow with the router usb storage, but in terms of features, at least for casual users, it should be good enough smile.gif

Wait for ac56u. Might be cheaper, and is gonna be better smile.gif

Just that in some way the 66u will be better, but for your usage, the 56u will be better as the read speed from usb storage is really fast for a router! Check this link!

http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/internet...-4246210-3.html

With hard disk formatted to ext3 or fat 32 it will be even faster.

If the hardware is same, look at the firmware support. Which 1 give better support. Than get that 1.

If you intend for media streaming and have budget, better invest on 4bay. It doesn't look big at all.

2bay with mirror will full in short time. Even with 3TB hdd.

My 4bay 6TB fill up in just 3yrs. And headache what to do with low budget now. rclxub.gif

hmm, but need to see budget also lol. If the price isn't too crazy, I might be able to go for it. But I will be changing router too, that's gonna cost about 500, so network purchases this year is gonna be pretty high sweat.gif

Even if I go for two bay, DS214, Im gonna have to ready about 2.5k sweat.gif
