It's so easy to hack even if it's BIOS or windows password..
Windows password can be bypassed using a linux to change the password =) Or if you didn't set administrator password then it can be login easily. Although it's not displayed in the user list. (Usually can see in safe mode) Go find a software that locks your pc. Then make that software start everytime? =/ Not good enough also.. You still need a 3rd party software somehow. |

Disable boot on USB / boot on CD.
Put password for administrator. Done. The above works well if your bro don't know what you did. |

go into ur bios,
1) in the boot sequence, select HDD as ur 1st boot up 2) set a bios password for changing ur bios setting (not password for bios boot up). go into ur windows 1) change ur admin user name to other name and change the password 2) create a new user as normal user with the previous admin user name and password so whenever he login to the previous admin name, it will be act as normal user, or mayb u wan to set it as guest, its up to u |

BIOS password? Gah! Open the casing and reset BIOS, puh the password gone. XP password? Use Ophcrack, in less than 10 minute the password is in hand already.
Create a hard, cryptic password, more than 14 characters, add spaces and symbols. Change it every week. |

Yeah.. Indeed.Create a hard, cryptic password, more than 14 characters, add spaces and symbols. Change it every week. I think better set long2 password+symbols etc. If i'm not mistaken lopthcrack cannot crack long2 password. Correct if i'm wrong because i tried it myself on my pc. |

Err no need whatever crap software lah.
Just unplug your CDROM / DVDROM power cable from your casing (when you don't use it) Disable boot via USB in your BIOS. Change password every 1~2 weeks which consists of 14 alphanumerical + special symbols like !@#$%^&*()_+|"?>< That will make your computer secure from being accessed. |

I used 2 USB
1) 64 MB 2) 256 MB task is to scan pdfs that are zipped 64 MG USB took abou 1 minute 256 MB USB took about 13 sec HDD took about 10 secs Under load HDD 13 secs 256 USB 19 secs so in the end... even if the HDD is under heave load it still beats the USB my method is crude, but should be sufficient to prove a point however, I dont have access to more "modern" USB devices maybe those will yield better results This post has been edited by mayhammer: Aug 2 2008, 12:53 AM |

QUOTE(fishooi @ Aug 2 2008, 10:07 PM) what obviously? the only obvious thing I see here is you know nothing. There's tools that can completely remove all Windows passwords, including Administrator password. The solution? Install Universal Shield, the next best thing to sex when protecting your files. It installs as a service so no one can disable it. If anyone try to uninstall, it will ask for password, if wrong password given, it will fake the uninstallation process. You can choose to hide the whole drive (just make sure you didn't hide your drive that have Windows files in it), a folder or just a single file, your wish. Then your brother will be fcuked up and he'll give up someday because he won't be able to crack it unless he can bring teh hard disk to another PC and play the game there... |

I did try with XP installed with my VM. It was easy enough to go to safe mode and disable the service so that you can log on as build-in local admin account. It was a little tricky for those protected files. I could actually see those files once in safe mode so I figured something has to be loaded in normal startup. And then I come across this one: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/745431# lol? So simple solution. The only protection that cannot be undone or take a seriously long time to undo is probably encryption based protection. I'm pretty sure you cannot encrypt the whole HD itself without affecting the booting of XP. In any case, you can override the local admin password (in fact, any users password, and if you're smart enough, you can even change it back so that they don't know you did it) using a LiveCD. Anyhow, he'll be able to boot into the system. So in other words, the solution you provided is not as godly as you think. Know nothing huh? zzz Added on August 8, 2008, 3:18 pmFor OP, you won't be able to stop him from boot-up and log-on to your PC if he really want to because he don't even need a CD-ROM drive to do so. BIOS password protection can be reset easily and those USB holes are everywhere on modern PC nowadays. This post has been edited by da3shou3: Aug 8 2008, 03:18 PM |

lol there's no way to prevent ur bro hacking ur password..
hacking pasword is as easy as 1, 2, 3.... That is becoz thanks to the microsoft, the password is stored in SAM file in the pc and the encryption is standard... Its so easy for reverse engineering. If u want to keep ur stuffs from him, get an external hdd |

I would suggest you to install a hidden camera and see how he does it. Guessing for thousand years here, won't be any use!!
By the way, don't ever use those method mentioned; 1)Set Admin password 2)Change Admin password day by day 3)bla bla.. It's useless as it can be reset or "break". YES, even Admin password.. within seconds.. The so call ahem software can be save in diskette, thumb drive, CD or even it's in your "C" drive already~!! Good Luck! In modern age, we introduce something call security key to lock and unlock the data.
Here is how the security key works.... (1) Bring out your HDD and maybe RAM also and put into a drawer (2) Lock it with something call physical key. You can buy the locks or key in any hardware shop. (3) Bring out your physical key when you are not around (4) Make sure duplication of physical key in not in your house. And when you need to access it; (1) unlock the drawer using your key (2) connect back your HDD and RAM Simple, right? It is why in modern ages, you always read about security keys.... And such security keys are more reliable than a password for XP If you want further security, there are so call double protection; bring out the RAM when you are not around This post has been edited by chanhin: Aug 22 2008, 02:33 PM |

Most of the discussions here are how weak the Windows password protection is...
IMHO, BIOS password is most secure but it need to pair with small padlock to lock the casing cover. Usually the pc casing came with small hook to allow you to put padlock on. Its purpose is to disallow people from resetting the BIOS and BIOS password. p/s Seriously if you brother still able guess (or hack) the BIOS password, well congratulation to you, your brother is genius, an unstoppable nature born hacker !!! sure there available tool in internet for us to hack microsoft password, else they won't have so much encryption tool sell to control window login. since he is your ro, why not create another OS partition for him to use? So he won't touch your stuff and affected your file, imagine a year got 365days, you want set 365 password per year? then better pray for your parent cepat cepat kena 4d then buy 1 more PC to him ad you will free.

consumer level password protection is sorta a joke.... with the right tools, only need minutes to break.. but good enough to deter 'common' people...
ur bro isn't one of them.. if he discovered the method himself, means whatever u do also he'll most certainly b able to bypass.... if a friend pass to him one then he shouldn't b that smart in d first place... just take all the the IDE/SATA cables, power cables, VGA/DVI cables , and mouse, along with u when ur not using... should b a major fuss for him to use ur com XD |

i remember back in the days when the pc had a key to unlock it.
old 486s had them. maybe you should custom make one. (if i knew how trust me i would) my housemate was like ure brother.always trying his luck at the winxp password.just make the password harder to guess. use numbers and small/big caps. |

A bit OT, but honestly speaking, even if your bro has no access to the PC, it won't make him study more. You can't force people who don't want to study to study. They'll just find something else to do.
So you got to figure out the root cause and deal with it. |

Actually no matter what also can crack de.
XP Pass - Just log into safe mode then can screw up the password liaw Bios Pass - Just use eraser to rub the chip on the motherboard Try using Acronis Partition magic if i am not mistaken. So when you boot, must go through the acronis page. Its like XP also the password interface. But you will have to go through this page before going into the XP pass page. Its sort of like a dual protection thing. Worse come to worse, remove the hard disk and put it back only when u wanna use it. HAHA!!!! |

I'm not sure how he managed to bypass my password and play games with it. I need help !!! Any software to prevent this ? Please enlighten me LYN members .... it's easy to get your password. nothing can prevent this.don't depend on default windows password protction. try to look for additional software. you can have a pc casing that has door/switch locks so that you can lock your pc physically. |
