Chinchillas: Haha, try and see lo, but I don't have a proper camera. Hard to get her to cooperate also. QUOTE(Tim_88DN @ Oct 9 2008, 02:14 PM) Hi, Welcome Tim_88DN,I juz happen to drop by this thread.I kinda like the hedgies from the first moment i lay my eyes on the pics....I juz want to ask some questions if you'll don't mind answering: 1. Is rearing hedgies very costly as I wanted to economise on certain things....if i want to rear them, what are the essentials needed for rearing them... 2. who are the sellers of hedgies that i can refer to in KL and Sabah? 3. are they compatible with staying together with other animals since i have dogs in the house? Is there a way to make those hedgies feel comfortable with their extended siblings aka dogs or other pets? 4. can recommend any breeds of hedgies that are good or are they limited? I think that's all for now....plz PM me the answers.....if those questions are already being asked, then i apologize and ask if they can be answered. Thanks and hope for swift replies. The cost of rearing a hedgehog varies, here goes the price list: 1) Hedgehog - 100 to 300 2) A box or a secured compound - 30 to 100 3) Water bottle and dish - 10 4) Hide out - Can use ice cream tubes 5) Exercise wheel (Preferably you get one, they need lots of exercise) - 25 to 150 6) Bedding - depends of what you use (if newspaper = free, but need to change everyday, unless potty trained) 7) Food - 20 / month (good quality cat food + worms / eggs / chicken / crickets / other things) High protein food Average is below 400 ringgit for all items. Maintenance is low. There are many sellers in KL, not sure about Sabah. Getting from breeders are much cheaper than pet shop. Possible to keep with dogs. But never leave the hedgehog and the dogs together unsupervised. Just try not to let any other pets harrass it if possible. I think we can only get a kind of hedgehog in Malaysia, the one that is African Pygmy version. The only difference is the colour. But is important that you observe the hedgehog before buying it, for the personality you want. Some are extra shy, some are very cranky, some are explorers. Observe and see which one suits you. |

Thanks for the info....at least i know what to expect in the pricelist......
i see that only the African Pygmy breed is available in M'sia.but can i ask....what is a "salt n pepper" hedgehog as mentioned on some threads that sells hedgies?it is something to do with the colour of the quills? how to get a hedgie to be acquainted with other pets as i have other pets in the house? and how can i tell from their action if they are shy, cranky or a bit of an explorer? |

Tim_88DN : Yeap, usually they preferred to be alone. I don't really understand what you mean by trying to acquaint it with other pets..
The personally depends on the hedgehog, is hard to change their original temperament. To know their personality, 70% of the info are provided by the seller (they should know the personality of hedgehogs if they spend time with it), 30% you can observe by putting them out at open space (See will they run around, will they show their quills, sometimes an angry one will bite if you try to hold it)... Like what mamata said, Salt & pepper refers to their colour. |

yeah, hedgy is very temperamental, is all depend on individuals, they like to be alone but sometimes they can mix around very well, start from young age, they r quite intelligent oso, can recognize owner, know where is toys, toilet train etc.
hedgy colors that we can get in malaysia are salt & pepper, albino, champagne and cinnamon. usually albino and cinnamon is more expensive |

They are not housed together, I was baby sitting Ham for my friend (third picture). She just bought him and he smelled of urine and cat kibbles, so she asked me to give him a shower first. For the one week holiday, they were housed in separated aquariums.
They'll fight (or either the male is trying to rape the female) if I house them together. lolx Pee or poo usually when it just wake up (just like gliders). I usually wake Boo up, let her walk around and take her meal before playing with her. |

Thanx again for the info......i would juz want to ask this........Is keeping hedgies as pets are allowed in the malaysian law as first my father is a bit a skeptic since we don't know if keeping them as pets is allowed under the Malaysian law.
can anyone enlighten me on this issue? Does a hedgie needs to be vaccinated for varities of diseases? if i want to take them out for a ride, can they have a car sickness or if i'm bringing them to another state, can they do good or have an air sickness? that's all for now and hope for swift replies....thanks and have a nice day |

They are not fond in travelling. If travelling is unavoidable, place them is a small dark box with some beddings (tissue, newspaper, fleece, etc), something like a shoe box will be good. Travelling by air? It should be alright but I don't know how to prepare it for flights. Besides most likely there'll be paper works for flying live animals. Usually people don't vaccinate them. But you can bring it for a deworm, is only around 20. I believe keeping an African Pygmy is legal in Malaysia. Many pets shops are selling them without any trouble. As far as I know one shop got fine and confiscated for selling certain snakes, geckos and turtles, but not hedgehogs. However, in certain states of America, breeding hedgehog is illegal. Good luck |
