Just a random question... Do you guys buy the original Blu-ray discs? Or will the pasar malam ones play as good as the original ones? I'm planning to buy an LCD TV that comes with a Blu-ray player. I'm not sure if I want that player!

Let me know, thanks!
*
I do use original blurays. Some I buy new, some I buy 2nd hand, some I rent.

I did buy once the pasar malam bluray (only RM10) but the video quality definitely not like original. It was not as sharp and moreover, the audio quality also not as good as ori.

The pasar malam RM10/pc is actually DVD. BD is the way to go  smile.gif

The packaging says "bluray" but yeah, won't be surprised if the actual content is DVD. They just market as "bluray" to trap the unsuspecting.

Actually thats what I expected. I expected not to see any PQ differences but I was seeing quite a bit of differences. I compared U571 (BD25 original and "local") and also another title I forget. The difference was noticeable.
*
I wonder what would cause the difference. Problem during ripping or during burning or both?

Not too sure. But the same with DVDs, I have seen clear differences between R1/R2 DVDs compared to our R3s and our local rips (RM10) stuff.
*
I assume those R1/R2 and R3 DVDs are originals? If so, I'm surprised that even originals can have such clear differences.

From my experience. TRUE.

I learn from someone that it is the pressing machine and process that burn the data onto the disc that makes the difference. All local DVD R3 here are manufactured by Speedy/HVN something like that. The R1/R2 are made in USA or Europe. The difference of R3 from R1 and R2 is noticeable.
That is why audiophile CD made in malaysia are hard to get. And that also explains why pirated DVD will NEVER reach 100% quality of the original.
I believe in this because I can see and hear the difference. I would rather pay RM50 for an ori DVD than a pirated BD25 movie. It's your choice...
*
Thinking back yes I would say it's true also. When I used to listen to a lot of music, often it was said the best pressings were from Japan or USA. I've even bought same CD but pressed in different places to listen to the differences.

So the way I see it, those who are now offloading their brand new BD60 players may likely be doing so more on the basis that BD software are still not cheaply available in MY and would like to stick to DVD.
*
I would agree. The cost of BD (and BD player) is a deterrent to widespread adoption.

DVDs really took off because of the pirates. If everyone back then forced to buy only ori DVD I think the adoption rate would also be very low.

If you're willing to spend a few hundred more and don't mind buying online, get the Pioneer BDP-320. I've tested it along with the Panasonc BD60 and Samsung BD-P1600 and the Pioneer is the clear winner in terms of AQ and PQ nod.gif
*
Winner in AQ and PQ for what kind of disc? DVD or BD?

For BD, as far as I understand most of the players are about similar (even the Oppo 83). It's in DVD where the player's upscaling capability can make quite a difference.

As for AQ, I presume this is using the onboard decoding? If bitstream to AVR, then the player's AQ is redundant right?

BDs. I dunno, maybe it's because they were not calibrated individually but out of the box, the Pioneer comes out tops nod.gif

Tell me more... better in what way? Sharper? More fluid? etc?

I applied the firmware (software) hack. My hardware hack will arrive early July.
*
Since you already applied the firmware hack, is it necessary to do the hardware one as well?

jchong,

Prefer the hardware mod since using the firmware hack, I need to wait for someone over in the UK to mod each firmware that comes after this. For instance, Oppo just released a new firmware yesterday, if I update the firmware, my region free mod will not work. The hardware solution should not be susceptible to firmware updates.
*
Understood.

To do the hardware mod I suppose you'll need to send it to Singapore? Or is it a user replaceable part?

PS3 is the best.. smile.gif
*
PS3 no doubt is very good and it was considered the best last 1 - 1.5 years.

But I think some of the standalone players have now become a bit better in PQ. Also, another significant advantage is they can bitstream audio to your AVR for decoding. So if your AVR has good decoding capabilities there will also be improvements in AQ.

If PS3 can bitstream audio that would narrow the gap.

any other BDplayer besides bd60 to recommend? same price range pls tongue.gif

BDP320 is out of question...lol

PS: those that can buy at malaysia, and not from amazon one biggrin.gif
*
For those available locally, I think BD60 is probably the best in its price range (about 1.1k - 1.2k now).

eventually bluray players would be dvd players at around RM200.
*
While that would be good, what I'm hoping for is for BD discs to become much cheaper. biggrin.gif

Yeah, agreed. Kind of frustrating when you pay for your BD, then someone just take it and rip to their collection for free. I don't mine to let them borrow a day or 2 to watch, but when they rip it and own it it seems unfair.

And even though those illegal downloads have nothing to do with my own BDs, it's still unfair to us in general. So piracy not only affect the studios, but us as well who pays for original. sad.gif
*
Then maybe should form a group to split the cost of the BD and allow group members to rip. Person who keeps the BD disc pays a little bit more than the rest.

Anyway, we're drifting off topic.

BDP via HDMI to AVR & another HDMI from AVR to LCD TV..... no issues with PS3... tried swapping HDMI cables with same results...
*
Sorry to hear of your troubles.

Have you tried Pioneer via HDMI to TV? Maybe the incompatibility is with your AVR?
