Old timer growing up watching the original star trek series/movies like me will appreciate this movie
Gen Y/Z might find it boring in terms of the plot, but they'll enjoy the eye candies

first, Klingon!
well... kinda disappointed when the helmet are removed, feels more plastic and less menacing than the original Klingon doh.gif

and the ending, and I thought they'll pay a tribute to the original Star Trek II by sending Spock too... and alas, it's another way round laugh.gif
But the death scene aren't as touching as the original one wink.gif

Also, I'm not really a Trekkie, can anyone tell me if the original Spock lost his temper before and ran amok?

Also didn't watch it in 3D, as it's a post production 3D, and based on the 2D, it's great, and IMO it's not suitable to convert to 3D, due to many of JJ's signature shaking cam and light flares... 3D will loose out lots of details, and making you dizzy laugh.gif

I'm afraid you are correct about the gen x/y...

This movie is UNDER PERFORMING in the States...

I fear for Star Trek 3...

Stupid Americans...

I have to say that I agree with you on this. The original series was groundbreaking for tackling issues like existentialism as well as morality issues, like whether the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many. But it has such a naive innocence to it, owing to the 60s - 70s sensibilities it was made in, it would never survive today's cynical audience.

However, I think even TNG would never survive today's audience, as it was never "fashionable" with the modern audience to begin with. That's why the series all died, by the 2010s. People have shorter attention spans and prefer style over substance. JJ Abrams was roped in for this exact reason. To make star trek fashionable again.

In a way, that is sad isn't it...

I remember that when Star Trek The Next Generation was release, it took sometime for it to come to our shore (how we survived without the internet in the late 80s and 90s I don't know). The local TV station were reluctant to show Star Trek TNG because, and I quote "It is TOO cerebral"....

Apparently our education system was already THAT bad back then...

I was expecting a full hall during the weekend screening, but alas, my sunday afternoon show aren't even half full! shocking.gif
my friend working with a local cinema chain also claim it's under-performing now...

The Imax Theater in Sunway was quite full on the 26th May (8:30pm show)... Though come to think about it, not as full as when I went to see Iron Man 3 (which I saw a week after it's launch)

Now I really fear for Star Trek 3... sad.gif

We had the tv and vhs before the internet, remember?

Its not education which was the problem, its the ppl mentality and their environment. Why bother watching scifi show when you have shows that dont require much if any thinking like scenario and raja lawak, or if you like your movies like rempit etc.

Plus riding on your motorcycle with your mates and making havoc and a fool of yourself is more "in" then watching scifi shows.

TV??

You mean RTM1 & 2 and also TV3...

Are you trying to give me nightmares or what?????!? tongue.gif

Ah, VHS, I have you know, people have MADE A BUNDLE OFF ME, on this format... laugh.gif

As for what you say... sad BUT true...

I still blame it on your falling standards in education blush.gif

Why Star Trek Should Return to TV

interesting.

... Things change

When the original Star Trek was on, it was not a social norm for different ethnic group to date, let along marry...

If Star Trek does a story about this, now, it would not compute...

If directors/produces stick to the original storylines/formula, the new Star Trek movies would NOT work.

As Eye Candy/Cerebral unchallenging as JJ Abrams Star Trek movies are, they STILL run rings around alot of current movies, with VERY FEW EXCEPTION.

Believe it or not, Star Trek Into The Darkness does ask some difficult questions

What JJ Abrams does not do in his movie is have his chess piece sit around, discussion the difficult question...

He gloss them over, with action and dazzling effects.

But the point is, he does ask them.

He just does not give his audience the answer.

I do understand where you are coming from and have to add the above is just my opinion

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

I am still shell shock about Anton Yelchin's passing...

I do not know if they "tweaked" the movie after his passing (I am thinking not), and have to add, the movie started a little melancholy.

Quite apt if you ask me.

Most of u probably heard over the news about Sulu's sexual orientation and that the movie will come acrossed as... I am assuming here, too gay.

It is not.

The situation was handled... matter of fact-ly.

I m also sure some of you (like me) were concern that the movie would be too fast, too furious... It is not.

They really got the chemistry for the three lead (Kirk, Spock and Bones) just right (with a dash of humor).

The hook for the villain's kill move is deadly and is more then a challenge for Enterprise

Overall, a pretty good add on to the Star Trek franchise.

And at the end, it hits you again that Anton is no longer with us (along with Nimoy)

How fragile, life is...

Am curious how ther resolve Chekov's character (now that JJ Abram has said he will not recast) in the future movies (and there will be future movies)

My Two Sen
