Yawning shows they are relax. How you expect them to keep their inscissors when they yawn.

Roche's pee is VERY smelly. I change once in 2 days. She pees a lot although all the moisture she gets is from nezu's smoothie.

Ferro's toilet starts to smell after some 5 or 6 days.

So basically I change wheneever it smells.

@coltrain: Well, actually those brown bowl will do. I stopped using those toilet already cuz my hamster love to scratch the sand all over the place ans it'll end up being kicked out of the bathroom. A bowl has higher sides and most of the sand stays in the bowl no matter how they scratch it.

Yah~ Basically toilet and bathrrom is just the brown bowl. It's easy, cheaper, better to use. Best combination for me. Hehe...

The thing about pets is, sometimes, the best solution for better health and usage may turn out to be the cheaper, less attractive option. Like 2ft tanks vs attractive habitrail cages. Quite unexpected.

But will it be too hot in the daytime? Will get heat stroke if too hot o.

Ferro is alredy awake and look up at me while lying on his back. Any special meaning here? Usualy he just looks at me from a standing position.

Ferro almost bit me once when I touched his back, just a little (some 2-3 weeks ago). So if I started belly rubbing it, I might get a chunk missing from my hand.

You're talking about robos right? The dominant robo will usually do that no matter how relaxed they are. I think they do it to be more dominant than you. By order of dominance, firstly is you (since you feed them and stuff) followed by the dominant robo (all other robos will submit to this one) then followed by other robos.

I find only the alphas do this. Young robos might also pick up this behavior. So blow on them to tell them they shouldn't.

They usually nip the nails harder since they can feel it is harder than your flesh. They'll let go after nipping a while.

@hazzy: There are still chances they are related if they're about the same size and age. Just that we won't know how the people place the hamsters that come by order.

They uuse a wooden crate like thing with a lot of hamsters in it. Then they slowly dump hamsters out into different tanks, trying to more or less put the same amount in every tank.

To start with, Pet Safari syrians are sick and very strressed. They lack space and equipment to exercise. When they do exercise (by running around the tank) they'll step on other syrians and fight may occur. How to avoid? Run away lar. And of course they are very frightened. I mean, in such huge numbers, you won't know why if suddenly another hamster bite you or wanna kill you. It can happen anytime. So cleep also not sleep well.

So when compare, my Roche sleeps like a pig. She won't scared who poke her or what. Tidur mati setiap hari.

Ferro on the other hand, you touch him a bit in his sleep, and he'll get defensive. So I usually try my best not to kacau and handle him until he is wide awake.


Blow on them softly, to shock them a bit. Let them know there are consequences for biting your hand. Teach them they cannot do thatand they cannot exceed our dominance. It takes a while but usually they learn lar.

Sigh... His hamster had 10 babies lar. He's damn desperate to sell it off. Plus he's a new owner (whom I think never bothered to research) already wanna become a breeder for profit. What to say le?

Can you imagine. Some newbie say it look lonely, then he suggest ppl buy a company for it (in other words, like tell the fella "take another one from me la!).

He probably thinks he's not doing anything wrong... Sigh.. He has 6-7 babies left. I wish newbies will drop by this thread to check it out before making further purchase.

I'm not wishing him bad luck or wat, but I hope people won't buy from him just yet. Let the babies get to 4 months old,, then we all see whether they fight a not. It's a bad experience for the hammies but he has to learn.

I always like to be safe than sorry so I always research whatever it is that I feel impulsed to get.

What we can do, is pm the people, advise them not to buy from him, explain why, then leave the decision to them.

It's his thread, he has the right to say and sell anything he likes. If we go in sabotage him, he will end up sell elsewhere or open another thread and stuff. Won't work.

Plus breeding is complicated and risky.

And I'm just keeping for the experience la. No breeding required.

Actually I heard from a persn (he himself also considered a supplire la) that there is only a handful of suppliers providing small animals to petshops. The ones that are not from suppliers are hobbyist and those hamsters only come in small amounts.

So if you got 2 hamsters that are about the same age, there's a big possibility that they are siblings or similarly related. Safer to buy 2 of a different age and a different place.

@Mike: This kinda thing is happening to petshops all over the place... And it reinforces the fact that syrians ARE solitary and just because we don't see them fight in petshops doesn't mean they don't.

Yeah.... But they're in that state cuz of people... They're really pitiful... Cannot sleep fitfully.. Will scared kena attack... And when getting attack, cannot find a place to run cuz the tank is only so small and confined... Sigh...

So sometimes when Ferro gets defensive, I don't feel angry at him cuz I understand his fear lor.

It's not a miracle that happens overnight mar. Patience. Wat is the symptoms of him being scared of you/ Run away? Hide, Get defensive and bare fangs?

You can try bribing it with food. I do that with mealies (although Ferro still wont take those from my hand). Sometimes fruits and vege also. Put lotsa food in the centre of your palm and wait VERY patiently for Colby to climb on your hand (which should be on top of the bedding) and eat it.

Let it get used to it for a few days. Then gently lift your hand a bit from the bedding. When he gets frightened he'll run down again. Wait for him to come back with your hand on the bedding again.

Love = patience + sacrifice.

Yup. Let's agree that it is not possible for any petshop to give one tank to a single syrian. Plus the hamsters in Pet Shack are well taken care of wat. I think that's good already. Better than many other petshops.

That cage ler... If you can tahan their chewing then ok lo. No doubt they will bite the bars. Robos are harder to train not to bite bars.

I always advise people to buy robos in pairs but if it's 1 male and 1 female I wanna ask you to rethink o. Most likely they're siblings or similarly related. The babies that come out from sibling breeding is not nice wan.

Well depends on the personality of my syrians. Robos, sure bang hard and fast. Not very cautious of wats going to happen.

My Roche is like a lady already. She used to bang hard hard but now very carefully manouver where she wants to go.

Ferro keeps banging the door where the curtain was... So always can hear "pak. Pak. Pak." the sound of Ferro banging the door.

It could be possible since all robos look alike without variations...

Anyhow the babies are really not something nice to see. It's not like they're blind or deaf or anything like that. It's their fur quality, their short lifespan and basically how they look like withering slowly.

Where??? I wanna see!! But Hun's black and white was cute also.

My bf's brother's hamsters just died so just now we just bought him another one. A black and white!!! XD A little bit mousy but ok lar. Got another one that's even more mousy. But there is one very cute sable in the tank.
