Savvy 73WHP / around 85-90BHP - only intake and exhaust modded.

Taken from Savoc.net

QUOTE
Just to share... when the Article from DRIVEN Magazine Issue 05 Page 73 praised Savvy about its R&H and being posted on AW forum by forummer, Savvy being bashed upside down by bashers (as usual lah) regarding the integrity of the Author. The Author from the DRIVEN magazine later counter post to clear the air (copy & paste from AW)

During the flag off for the Speedball which was at around 10am we were
presented with some administration problems from our office. 3 guys had
to stay behind. That was I, the photographer and Jeff. We all had our
allocated seats in a nice Perdana and a Mercedes E280. By around 1 pm our
admin problems were not sorted out yet and we were further delayed cos it
was lunch time. So the other participants from the other two cars had to
leave. By this time most of the participants were already having their
lunch in the Gopeng/Kampar area.

By around 3pm I had to let Jeff go since he was also our event co-
ordinator. But there were no cars left. And the paper work on his 4x4 was
not sorted out let alone fit to run in this event. Without thinking we
had to borrow 2 cars from Proton Berhad since they were the Emergency and
Technical support. We had asked for a Perdana V6, the thought of driving
a Savvy for 2400+km, man that's crazy! So can you imagine our reactions
when they presented us with a Savvy? Our disappointment was obvious and I
had objected to the idea of driving 3 buff guys in a little car for
2400km. So for consolation they gave us 2 Savvys.

Not wasting anymore time Jeff proceeded leaving me and the photographer.

Were we bought up? No. As a new magazine we do not get much priviledge
from manufacturers. And if we were bought up they would have given in to
our request which was a V6 that we wanted.

Why would anyone stay back till 7.30pm to drive to Bukit Kayu Hitam?
Again our admin problems were not sorted untill around 7pm. It is 456km
from KL to Bukit Kayu Hitam speed around 110-120km/h, add 2 stops for
petrol and pee 15 mins each that will take us roughly 5 1/2 hours to
reach. So latest we had to leave by 6pm. The border closes at 12am and
only reopens at 6am. If we had miss that the rest of the participants
would be 10 hours ahead of us. Which we would have missed the event and
not get our story which we had been working on for months. But we could
only leave at 7.30pm. If I remembered correctly by the time we passed
NKVE Damansara it was 7.40pm.

Pedal-to-the-metal. Yes I admit to speeding. Don't we all once in a
while. So be it and send me the summons, I will take full responsibility.

Prior to all that I think the abundance of adrenaline came from the Big
Mac, large fries large coke and a Power Root while we were sorting out
our paper work. Hey I'm not blaming our diet for speeding but if you had
taken that amount of fat and sugar it will take give you the same buzz
too.

So while we were trying to burn all that we were V-maxing at around 140-
150km/h. It was on a normal Thursday so traffic was low, so occasionally
we had an open highway to ourselves. We pushed our speed up after Rawang.
And we were flat out in the poor little car. It was a MT. I thought we
were going to blow the gear box the way we were shifting. But the car
kept going.

We had our driving lights on so slower traffic were curtious to us and
moved left almost immediately. When approaching traffic we did slow to
120km/h and when clear we let rip to 170km/h. There were cars who
would 'run' with us for no apparent reason but we just stayed at 170 for
a long period of time. And either they could not be bothered to keep up
with us of got tired of the speed they dropped off. All this speed we had
to have petol stops. We had 2 stops. One after the second toll after Ipoh
and the other just before Alor Star. Each stop took about 5 minutes not
more. We did hold off the pee, well we took turns. One would pump and
other pee. We wasted no time. And we were using Smart Tag so it helped a
lot.

When we did our second petrol stop before Alor Star it was around,
hmm...11pm (don't hold it against me guys I will check our receipts,
still have it). I thought we weren't going to make it and thought it
would have been a wasted trip. But we pushed on shifting gear after gear
driving the car like we just had just stolen it until we reached the
border. By the time we had purchased our Third party insurance for the
car, check through customs, we made it through the border at EXACTLY
12AM. While taking a breather at the Thai border, Peter( photographer),
who had kept real quiet in the car all the way, lit a cigarette and
starts swearing at me in Cantonese just like what POWERHAUS had said on
page 1, t** n** m* c****...next time YOU DRIVE LIKE THAT.... I can't
remember much after that.

We immediately called the other guys who were already in Hadyai and told
them, " hey we made it!" Only to get the respond, "...why so late?! We
already had dinner!".

So the rest of the way from the border into Hadyai we did kept it within
speed limit, rest assure.

Why the long story? Upon our return I had related my speeding experiences
with Jeff and he had related me his comfort experience about the Savvy.
It was that we, non Proton car owners (myself a Kembara and Jeff a Mit
4x4), had under estimated this car completely. We initially gawked at the
car when Proton gave us the keys but came back ranting and raving about
it.

We were hugely impressed with its ride and handling, which is obviously
the work of the Malaysian owned Lotus Engineering division, that had
given it its stability in high speeds and on windy roads. Especially the
windy pass after Ipoh toll...Boy that car can handle and the twisty
highway 4 from Phattalung into Krabi. Supportive seats and all. Hard but
supportive. All in all we came back home to KL thinking about getting
this car for our wives but secretly for ourselves. Why? because we had
liked the sporty-ness to it. Above it all it was in our budget.

A week after the event we were still talking about the car so we decided
to write an article on it. So the Savvy article came out in DRIVEN
unplanned and unintentionally. So sorry for those those offended by our
passionate auto journalism style but I would suggest that you guys stick
with foreign mags and wait for one day that you'll have the opportunity
to go out and purchase a 250K VW Gti or a super hot hatch from Vauxhall.
But for now the Savvy has our praises not because Proton lent it to us
but based on the fact that this little car did not let us down in this
event. That's why in the title we said The Proton Savvy- The little
engine that can.

Thank you DRIVEN101 from DRIVEN Magazine

Latest extract from AW responded by DRIVE101 from DRIVEN Magazine (another writer)

I'm Jeff the other writer on the article. Based on what we have read in
AW this forum is not a healthy one with the amount of P1 bashers. I too
have under estimated the car when the SAvvy was launched until we drove
one. The article speaks for itself. My job takes me into the jungle where
I have to organize 4x4 expeditions. My everyday car is my trusted
Mitsubishi Pajero. The Savvy is a serious contender for my wifes car.
What's stopping us from buying? Nothing.

But as for the forum we can't say much for these bashers. We don't know
who they are. The editor and I had to come in to see what the stink is
all about and to stand up for what we have written. And we stand by it.

We think the Savvy for this price is a good car.

The answer is no- we weren't paid by Proton.

Jeff Z

There's some water on the spark plug holes...it will go even if you dun blow dry it.
Worse case, hope it didn't spoilt the connector due to spark arcing - burning thru a small hole causing leakage when the spark grounded on a water droplet.

btw hypermount, thanks for update my list name.

more info: h-line energy orange 2007 model. biggrin.gif

still wonder which part of sensor got wet by water. =.="
*
could be the spark plug well get wet with water - hence the ignition related prob like what I've said earlier... I suspect it's due to water is not drain properly thru the gutter panel - the black panel under the wiper during heavy rain - hence water go into the engine bay...the hole is stuck with leaves, twigs, debris etc.

ok. will chk.

just now got stutter prob when rpm below 2000. but after i restart the engine; my car, ok edy. sad.gif owh today i didnt hear any amt sound when i open my door's car like it use too! haih. i pening kepala edy hypermount. so sad!  rclxub.gif btw, no raining today.

hypermount, can u ask ur proton's fren that amt sound u mention b4 is for what? chk the gear, clutch or what? cos i think if smthg happened can figure it out. hurm.

edit: just now i check the sound is back.  biggrin.gif after reading from savoc, the sound if for hydraulic clutch n gear pump sort of.
*
The AMT wiring is linked to the door and brake - that's why when you open the door - got somekind of whirring sound. and gear auto downshift when pressing brake. Only in AMT savvy...

The radiator fan is normal man - typical of continental cars. SO DO NOT ever restart and shut down the engine to force the fan to stop spinning. Let it stop spinning itself. To save more fuel, when you drive w/o aircon you will encounter this more often nowdays. You can feel hot air draft from the back of the car, quit powerful. Scared the shit out of my mech once when the fan keep spinning. Functions like a turbo timer.

Ya, me too. No major problems. Its a good all-round car (great for both short & long distance travel). The car still feels solid to drive after 3 years. I haven't changed my tyres yet, but i know i have to ASAP. sweat.gif  sweat.gif
Hypermount, u from Johor?
*
yes the only major wear n tear part I changed on nearly my 3-year old baby was tyres....

My other half is Johorean, and I'm quite familiar with JB also..staying in melaka.

QUOTE(death_nite @ Jun 25 2008, 08:37 AM)
wait till one month.  sweat.gif mine got some minor rattle after one month usage.  cry.gif but only heard when got bumpy/hole road. my front absorber (i think) got nyit nyit sound on bumpy/hole road.
thats so not fair!
*
I got that when first got that car,,rectified during 1st 1K km service, something to do with the coil spring and bush.

Savvy is stable cos the chassis is rigid enough, you can feel it when going bumps or potholes, the whole chassis held it well together..even bigger cars like gen.2 and nip cars can't be compared. no need waste money on strut bars and other suspension mods.

120-130km/h is the sweetest spot for me..160km/h still stable even on my 13'' wheels and tyres..

and yea saga BLM stability also sucks... beroktua cars no need mention la...the worst is viva, the doors , the ride, steering, gearbox everything sux to the max..really like a toy car, nip cars gene.

sillicate buidup at the hose joints...bad sign..

DO not ever follow the manual, better flush @ clean the system yearly even it's a close circuit one.

how to flush the radiator? since there are no cap to access it.
*
Remove the upper hose on the right top of the radiator and the bottom hose on the left. Hose down from the top of the radiator and do reverse flush from bottom. It's very hard to remove the hose clamp spring clip with a normal plier (you need to use a special locking plier), change it to screw hose clamp, easier to remove with a screwdriver. If you're adventurous or have serious problem with sediment, remove all the hoses you can find, like the one on the thermostat housing beside the engine and clean the hoses. After that you can refill and reflush using flushing formula or distilled water repeatly ...then only finally add coolant mixture.

16km/L on stop & go traffic is very good already.
Hmmm sediments  hmm.gif . I'm not sure about Savvy coolant spec, but I know Toyota Super Coolant (RM18/Litre) with 50-50 mixture of clean water are quite good - could last very long without sediments. Maybe could get few bottles and use it? If it works, good for the engine though.

AFAIK, I've tried other brands, some are "green", some are "white"... but after few days, they all become brown with sediments. This Toyota one maintain as new as 1st use (red color) even after a year.
*
HOAT coolant is pretty expensive, that toyota coolant is cheap for it's price. Caltex Long Life is RM16.50 per 500ml, sold in Jusco coolant made by a local company Maximilin is around RM32 for 1.2L (more expensive yellow type one). Use only distilled water - tap water could cause heavy sediment in long term.

this week i wanna send my car for 40k service. this is my 1st time i service my savvy (previously it's my dad's. just handover to me swap with my kembara dvvt  laugh.gif ) i hope that u guys can give me some advice and suggestion like what is the best engine oil, what things need to be checked etc etc.

thx in advance  smile.gif

I would say Amsoil ATM 10w/30 PAO based fully synthetic oil, best oil for savvy much better than Mobil 1. Or you can go for their top of the range Amsoil SSO.

40k - service
ASk them to check/clean the spark plugs before changing them

Thanks hyper! replacing the hose connector with standard garden type is a good move smile.gif make life easier for the next flush
anyone know about the merdeka promo?
*
hahah no la, llok carefully, I just stuck the garden hose into the hose to flush out old coolant and buildups...reverse flushing is to dislodge the buildups...the coolant flow in savvy radiator is from bottom to above hose..

Removed all the hoses, and the only thing I changed was the original hose clamps spring type to screw clamps so easier to remove the hoses in the future to do multiple flushing..like using distilled vinegar, and run the car and then do multiple flushings to ensure the system is totally clean.

from this --->> user posted image to this ---->>> user posted image

spring clamp is hard to remove using normal plier, need a special locking plier to make it easier.

savoc.com.my is mostly in malay chat..

Suck out the oil from the reservoir using hand pump or watever means like automotive syringe , refill 0.6 litre...drive for a while maybe for few hundred kms to few thousands, then suck out again to ensure all old fluid in the lines apart from the reservoir totally replaced...for a 2 litre bottles that cost only RM70, u can do it 3 times, 6-7 times for 2 bottles I dun have qualm of doing it if my savvy is an AMT..there's no way to bleed the system.

diy change the AMT fluid.

you mean like thick wiper - like the Bosch aero-something, somebody's selling at the automotive garage...later dig out.

The AMT oil pack comes in 2 litre...you only use 0.6 litre, un sealed oil can't be kept long, nobody will but the opened bottle.. ok what do like that.

You need to press more...our ECU is adaptive/learning type..the throttle will feel slow if you've been driving sedately for quite some time.

any prove?... cos i think ecu on savvy just 8pin(passive/static) ... not 16 or 32(intelligent/learning)... if 16 or 32 like subaru or evo.. u can remap it..
correct me if wrong

some say we can remap our ecu, can't use piggyback..what pin is that? on the ecu or diagnostic cable?

now cannot change auto and at 3rd gear i step full acceleration the RPM only reach 3,000 is like got speed limit...Also changin gear 4 sec delay...within the 4 sec u accelerate then you only hear vromm but car not moving....I wonder if they change new ECU then use another few months then spoils again ah??? This car only 2 months old...The reliability sucks....

Change ECU and if the installation is dodgy also no use.. the AMT is highly sensitve cars and proper wirings need to be done..

That rev limit is some kind of safe/limp mode. Happens in old renaults due to age/ wear n tear/chaffed of wirings... or improper earth grounding installation etc.

Sensitive also due to dirty sensors, all contact points/connectors need to be clean also not only the sensor itseft.

My ECU just after 3 years..all dusty cos never clean.

Just look at the testimonials of zaptor VS/ grounding users..with a simple device like that much improvement was felt esp on AMT users.
