QUOTE
Obon (お盆, Obon?) or just Bon (盆, Bon?) is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors' graves. It has existed in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as Bon-Odori.

Bon Odori (盆踊り, meaning simply Bon dance) is an event held during Obon. It is celebrated as a reminder of the gratefulness one should feel toward one's ancestors.

And yes, cosplaying in Bon Odori is distasteful. I wondered if the Japanese thinking Malaysians are such morons for cosplaying in Bon Odori.

the KL japanese society is really mad at them.

Bon Odori (盆踊り, meaning simply Bon dance) is an event held during Obon. It is celebrated as a reminder of the gratefulness one should feel toward one's ancestors.

Oh, got Malaysia entry oso. laugh.gif

QUOTE
Malaysia

A Bon Odori Festival is also celebrated every year at Penang and at the Matsushita Corp Stadium, Shah Alam. This celebration, which is a major attraction for the state of Selangor, is the brain child of the Japanese Expatriate & Immigrant's Society in Malaysia. In comparison to the celebrations in Japan, the festival is celebrated on a much smaller scale in Penang and Selangor (Malaysia). Here, it is less associated with Buddhism and more with Japanese culture. Held mainly to expose locals to a part of Japanese culture, the festival provides the experience of a variety of Japanese food & drinks, art and dance.

Decora, Decoration, or Fruits fashion is a street fashion among Japanese teens, consisting of colorful clothing and accessories from head to toe.The basic meaning of the decora fashion is decorated, so adoring them selfs with Teddy bears and small Dolls and many layers of clothing! They are most often located in Harajuku, Tokyo in Japan. Decora is a fashion category from the magazine, FRUiTS, but Decora does not necessarily have its own brand shops. They are not too strict about their fashion code, and they are noted and eyecatching for their originality in fashion.

It's a freaking Festival of the Dead... and not in any good way like Halloween or Mexican Day of the Dead.
I'd be respectful to our ACTUAL fellow Japanese citizens and leave them in peace to respect THEIR customs. Instead of the very Malaysian way of campur everything.

dude - they (the farking Japs) are inviting, you shall not mix up party crashers (lala and all those BS) with people who actually love to learn about other cultures. Many Malaysians are respectful of other people's culture, you know.

if you think Malaysians are just simply party crashers, maybe you are one whistling.gif

Hell, if I recall. This version of Bon Odori also places more emphasis on Japanese culture (not so much, if any, of Japanese pop culture, mind you). Think of it as a cultural exchange programme courtesy of one of M'sia's Japanese expat societies, not the actual festival.

<quazacolt> see!! arent I right on target?? brows.gif

<sailormercury> agrees!! nod.gif

<aiko> either way oso creates airds...jz hw u manage to avoid it the matters..besides, ur special case..

<onso> bon = obon = respecting dead day, odori = dance...so bon odori is the dance to remember and respect the day in which they celebrate in the morning by going to the cemetery to offer prayers and night, dance to celebrate their blessings...so either way, the night ver. is also a festival and the japanese have cordially invited malaysians to share their culture but instead there are ppl ruining it. Still, there are other ppl enjoying it. You can have a pass on this festival cz its your choice

You can have a pass on this festival cz its your choice

these are some of the common type of lolita.

when Lolita is mentioned, it'll usually point to the pure type of lolita like sweet lolita, classic lolita. but instead when gosurori(gothloli/ gothic lolita) is mentioned, its towards the gothic style of lolita ONLY

actually seafoods are those so called "lala" ppl, which are sluts and b!tches and farkers. as the lala's price is vry cheap and well its mention as those ppl are cheap. but now it have another meaning of wanna-be.

try look at the difference of the seafoods girls and the proper Lolita. and so you can see their sense of dressing is how different. dressing in lolita is not just about looking alike. lolita have its own rule to follow. but these girls are spoiling up the actual way of how it would be. instead of making it to be nicer, they show how senseless are them in dressing.

no offense but i find it funny. I saw many malays make yukata out of batik.

and since they are wearing others ppl's traditional clothing with tudung. try imagine if they wear chinese traditional dress with tudung. or english gaun with tudung. doh.gif

to me, its either wear it PROPERLY in its original way or else DONT WEAR and spoil the image

there wont be enuf parking for all so most driver will double or triple park beside the road...
there will be some police/RELA personal guarding that area during that event...

Regarding the meet up at McD, how can I recognized the group? Anyone wearing yukata? If so, then there will be no problem as I'll surely recognize that that is the group going for the festival. tongue.gif

i'm going with my wife. will be wearing yukata. will be driving there, but still thinking either to park at carrefour subang (covered and FREE) and take komuter to shah alam.

but then, wearing yukata in a crowded komuter somehow doesn't sound as a good plan... therefore most probably driving.

check the attached brochure...

see you guys there ~~

no rain during bon odori day yet, for me...
they are freaking expensive - more expensive than expensive Japanese food in a typical Japanese restaurant! >> this kind of expensive.

they accept cash only, btw.

anyway, question for drivers who drove to last year's bon odori:
did you guys have to park on a road divider due to lack of parking space along the road?
*
yosh...pls dun joke around... tongue.gif

there is ony two lane on each side of the road and normally ppl will double or triple park on the left lane...
no one will park at d road divider coz it will block d flow of the traffic...

WAIT WHAT?
TOMORROW? Crap..
It's a bit difficult to ask my friends to accompany me in such a short time..

Well..I guess I could meet you guys at KL Sentral..Since I never been there, so I probably won't know how to get there.

Do take into consideration that this is still part of a serious Japanese festival just that it's not so emphasized here. So don't go wearing ultra-mini skirts or dressed flashily.

There is not a lot of japanese gals there lar....hahaha...a lot of j pretenders....malaysian gals dressing in yukata and think they're Japanese or so it was said....or mostly, malaysian learning japanese language in language schools and then went to the event dress in yukata....you know....its part of the culture exchange in between.

Anyway, it was quite an event - people were dancing together with the team on stage - quite an sight.....talk about Malaysia warm response !!! Malaysians definitely give the performers LOUD CHEERS !!!

BANZAI to Bon Odori 2008 - why? Coz at least they performed on stage for us all to have a feel of Japanese cultures in Malaysia !!!

Back before the event ends...else you're gonna stuck in terrible jams !!! I estimated the crowd to be around 5K....hehehehe....smile.gif

Added on July 12, 2008, 10:03 pmI mean at any one time - the crowd inside is about 5K...if counting in and out and in and out...I dont know lar...

Ask the 'statistician' or the 'number counter' person...XD

Yupes yupes...those little Japanese kids are cute....saw a few of 'em running around when everyone is dancing around....hahahahah....

Leng luis to kap? Haiyar.....dont know for what....everyone has their own beauty and uniquely distinct...so to me...everyone is beautiful....^^

Dancing with the crowds? Hehehehhe....yea...I think it will be great too (no need to say dance with the pretty ones la - as I said, everyone is a beauty of a person...hehehe) - but rather think of the fun you have then....hehehe..oh yeah....and the chance to know new friends...that would be even better !!!

P/s: I dont see my Japanese sensei or her friends .....I know I know....the place is big and there is a huge crowd but well, I saw her and her friends in Lot 10/Pavillion the other day - I dont want to act dumb here but - KL is way bigger than Matshushita Std rite? so....hehehehe....

Added on July 12, 2008, 10:30 pmThe number of fans given? Then not accurate lor..coz you said it aledy, Tsukasa.

Coz, when I was on my way back, they gave away the fan in batches !!! hahaha....so..I think a way to 'increase' crowd number and then at the weekly nihon no shimbun , maybe they can publicized more and said more than 30K people attended? lol ....

Even Munakata chef from Jalan Sultan Ismail is there as normally go there for lunch. lol.

And seriously. the food quality there is really really bad.

yup yup...saw a lot of lalachai and lalamuis....haihz....Bon Odori in Malaysia seems like a place of gathering for Malaysia cultures rather than the Japanese ones...hahaha..no offense to them.....after all, the Japanese presence is still very much alive there.....hahahaha...

But....being my first Bon Odori in Malaysia, I think it would be fair to say at least, it's not bad and an experience....!!! Of coz you can beat the real Bon in Nihon...so yea...

Not sure if I wanna post any pics from the event....i'll see about that...tongue.gif

p/s: at least managed to meet my online friend there.....hahaha..after knowing her all these while...at least it's worth it...^^

Wee, been wanting to go to bon odori since several years ago, and finally I got to go to it. (went once to the penang one during schooltime, but school being school, event start at 5, we had to leave by 5 >.< ). My friends seems to be having fun taking pics, guess that worth it biggrin.gif.

踊る楽しました!、来年も行こう!。Odoru tanoshimashita!. Rainen mo ikou!.

gonna make sure i got a yukata and a happi by next year .. hehe ..

hurm, a little googling and i found a collection of obon ongaku .m4a (MPEG4 Audio), (No, i'm not sharing tongue.gif .. - plus, i'm not sure bout the licensing/copyright status)

Which was why i wasn't interested. Short of being disrespectful, i didn't want to spoil such a more serious festival(which it would be in Japan).
