Hmmm....hard to give recommendation since u no budget. Lets see, since no budget, and u want heavy gaming VGA device, PLUS expandable memory i'd say u'll have to wait for the coming HTC Touch Pro with qwerty keyboard. If u can live with 4GB internal non expandable memory like me with no qwerty keyboard, u can go for HTC Touch Diamond.

as far as i know, those are the two only options u have now because of "VGA", "hard gaming" and "HSDPA or higher"

probably when the Touch Pro will release n cost how much? how bout the latest price for Touch Diamond? i thk i will need a keyboard cos will do a lot of emailing n office document work, a keyboard is better...

yes i agree, a keyboard is definitely better for u in that case. The touch pro i would estimate either late july or august. price i estimate maybe close to 3K give or take.

Ah i see your priority is moderate gaming, and movie watching experience. For movies, i must tell u this, u need an EXTREMELY powerful pdaphone to play movies with huge resolution (like those which are extremely clear on your PC). And those pdas, are currently only the axims, which are very very old, and they're just pdas not pdaphones.

You'll have to convert those DVD quality movies into smaller resolution, meant for pocket pc. U can find many such applications via google if u dun have it yet.

So, now, i'm considering u're ok with that.

U have wide variety to choose from:

lets start with "with front camera" : u have the HTC P3600i, which is around 1.7k range brand new. It has everything u require as stated, but its QVGA.

An alteranative is Eten X800, good specs with VGA screen (QVGA stands for quarter VGA, so u can figure the resolution). But i believe its more expensive, at around 2k (i think) and the warranty support by the distributer, is not as good as HTC's SIS. SIS can repair for u in malaysia. Eten normally send back to taiwan for repair so can take damn long.

Both have front camera and 3G.

Both are newer models relatively. I wouldnt recommend going for Touch Cruise since it interferes with gaming with its Touch Flo. But u can check out Touch Cruise as well if you like.

Eten has older models worth having a look like p535, but it doesnt have 3G.

I dont recommend going for device with square screen cuz very very few games fit square screens

and no, i used to view videos on HTC P3600i, converted it into a pocket pc format video (for example, HOUSE M.D is only 70 mb in pocket pc format) and watched it flawlessly no problems.

If u increase your budget just a hundred bucks, u can actually buy HTC Touch Diamond, the latest pdaphone by HTC. There is an official thread here u can have a look, just read the first two posts for a summary. Note : normal pdaphone battery around 1350maH but Diamond only 900maH. I did a battery review check it out. But if u dun have a car charger or u plan to be outdoors for prolonged time, then dun get diamond. Cuz then u need extended battery. Which is probably around 150. Means u increase your budget by 250 lol

the battery part is normal.. PDAs use more power than regular phones.. so they can nvr be compared
look at the condition of the phone.. test it out.. take ur time.. make sure everything is working.. try out the buttons, screen.. bla bla bla.. just the regular stuff..

err.. can i ask wad does ur dad do? like, he's gonna use the PDA to input alot of data and stuff? if so.. its better with a QWERTY keyboard. i think the best HTC device u can get now is the TyTn II.. its made for business.. got business card recognition software bundled too..


and to answer ur question, PDAs have handwriting recognition.. its called Transcriber.. its actually quite good.. but i still prefer using the virtual keyboard if there is no hardware option.

bout HTC's categories, Smartphones are some sort of a PDA, but it doesnt have a touch screen.. Touch devices are those with built in TouchFLO interface ( correct word to use a? ).. examples are such as the HTC Touch Diamond.. its more towards the user not using the stylus to execute stuff using the touch screen.. PDA Phones, are the normal ones.. without a built in TouchFLO interface.. but u can still put it in if u like..

@flyhalf, wat dadarouch said is correct. i also recommend the tytn 2, but, show your dad and let him handle a bit first, since not everyone likes the extra weight. i recommended my dad a qwerty keyboard pda as well, but in the end my old man couldnt stand the extra weight, and settled for Touch Dual.

i recommend u call SIS and see if any sets to hold and feel. they should have. also, not all HTC are Quadband for constant travelling. ask SIS which model is Quadband. Triband devices dun work well in US and Japan. EDIT: they dun work at all lol

thanks dadarouch and baronic for ur advices. so let me get this straight. both HTC smart phones and PDA phones don't have TouchFlo unlike the Touch Phone right? so what's the difference btwn Smart phone and PDA phone? but all 3 types have PDA functionalities correct? Sorry if i asked too much bcz i planned to get the Touch phone for myself, but what's the use if it doesnt have PDA functions, right?

Anyway, i think my dad gonna use it mostly for business purposes and works (he's a businessman).so the keyboard will greatly help. i'll take baronic advice and ask my dad if he's gonna be comfortable with the weight. maybe i'll recommend the Touch Dual to him too (hopefully the Dual have all the PDA functionalities just like the Tytn II). As u guys can see I'm really a noobie when it comes to PDA phones.

Smart phone is without touch screen and PDA phone is with touch screen. Touch Dual is a PDA phone, so it has all the PDA function except Wifi.

@squareballs: at that price, forget all the models u mentioned, go for HTC P3600i. I strongly recommend it against all the before mentioned models. Its a real powerhouse.

@Flyhalf: the TOUCHFLO is a gimmick, its just the different user interface HTC created for certain Pdaphones. Thats all. and yes, Touch Dual is a PDAphone, and it can do everything a pda can, unless u see the specs stuff like no wi-fi la.

@K_zyl, i get your requirements. Looks like heavy gaming is your main requirement. I recommend NON Touch FLo devices. Which rules out all the touch, touch cruise, even diamond. QUite honestly, diamond is nice to look at and everything, but despite being able to play COD2, a lot of other games cannot play, due to VGA incompatibility and Touch Flo lagging up the game. Also, DIamond has too few buttons for u to really enjoy gaming. I was considering to downgrade back to tytn2 for gaming, but gf dun let lol.

So here are my recommendations, HTC Tytn 2, HTC P3600i. Both match all your requirements. Both the tytn2 and P3600i have same gaming capabilities, just one has qwerty the other doesnt.

Dont expect to play COD or Quake (QUake DIamond also not strong enuf to play, it only just manages COD, to play Quake u need Dell Axim), but u can play many many other cool games like Guitar Hero 3.

WIth those two options, i think u should go for Tytn 2. More buttons better.

ive looked up on the net following my previous request. i found 3 models that suit me but there are pro and cons of each.i cant decide.plus 2 of them not in malaysia yet so have to factor in the patience of waiting.

like: available now, touchflo3d interface, icon design, gps, opera,
dislike: a bit on expensive side, plastic casing, small-ish 2.8" screen (relatively), battery life

samsung omnia;
like: nice form factor, metalic body, large 3.2" widescreen, 5mp camera
dislike: sucky WQVGA res, too windows mobile, have to wait

se experia;
like: specs are all fabulous esp screen
dislike: bulky (qwerty keypad), too long have to wait

i actually would go for experia but considering that i badly need a new phone now, waiting is the hardest thing to do. the decision i have to make is either go for diamond or wait for experia. is it worth to wait? i scared i buy diamond now later when experia comes out my diamond will depreciate a lot.

it is the nature of technology to depreciate quickly and fast. so it comes down to which u prefer. we cant help u, since all of us have our own personal opinions. u have to decide which to get.

the main reason im looking to buy these types of pda phone is the gps.baronic, is diamond's gps good enough?in terms of accuracy,connectivity etc

a GPS phone with a numeric keypad.. Asus P526 and the P750.. thats all i can think off.. the rest are all with QWERTY keypads.. for HTC, u can get the TyTn II.. the Samsung SGH-i780 is not bad either.

@horseman, if u dun need a hardware numeric keypad, a virtual keypad also can, then u can basically settle for any PDA. I use virtual keypad, basically it shows a T9 normal phone keypad on your pda screen to type like normal sms using one hand only. its free to use, and any pda shud be able to use it. Need to know your budget range before offering anything though.

@chianping, chianping, for your requirements, i believe you'll have to aim for Eten Glofish M700 or the newer Eten Glofish M800. They both meet your requirements. I'm not too sure bout M800's current price but the worst is it exceeds your budget just a little. Your 2k budget constraint + no second hand is the issue.

@dp82, because you're a frequent traveller, your options are limited. Eten or Glofish devices are out since they're mostly Triband i believe, so do not work in US or Japan. I strongly recommend Dopod 838pro. It does not have GPS though.

@k_zyl, no problem. i dont have a shop, i'm just a normal pda fanatic. For the best price i would recommend searching in our garage sales itself. I would usually recommend a seller, but i'm currently having unresolved issues with him, so i dun wanna recommend in case he does not resolve it.

as for that samsung model, u could try it, i havent really tried that model before. But i believe it has WQVGA? So u'll have third party applications and games incompatibility problems

I see i see. Well, for starters i dun recommend O2 since their support is pretty bad. And pricey. Their new line up is promising though. but expensive.


But anyway, for you i recommend O2 Atom V. Brand new should be just at your budget. Nice, sleek, extremely powerful processor, downside, no video call, and only 64 mb of ram, so heavy gaming which requires more ram may be a problem. But u want light gaming. So stuff even like Age of Empires shud be no problem. i wanted to buy this cuz of the proc, but then, powerful proc plus weak ram, no point, hard to heavy game with low ram so didnt bother.

More within your budget i recommend HTC P3600i.Around Rm 1700 brand new, ori by SIS. I used this before, and its one of the more reliable HTC devices out there. Lower proc power than Atom V but still fast, just dun have 3D acceleration so cant play those 3D accelerated games like COD. with 500Mhz u can basically play any other game though. ALso, unlike atom V it has a front camera for video call.

Both above mentioned devices have GPS and 2MP cam. Both i strongly recommend for your requirements. If u dun need front cam, i'd go for Atom V. CUz of the beautiful design and proc lol. But if u plan to get a gf, get a front cam. haahaha

Hi guys, I'm thinking of upgrading to a new PDA phone. Would appreciate it if I can get any help in choosing the right PDA phone as generally I know next to nothing about PDA phones having not previously owned one before. Any help would be really appreciated

@sigheart, if u want something different try the Eten Glofish X800.

@musufik, bro, both the models u want above is NOT vga. a good VGA within your budget is the Eten Glofish X800. As for virtual keypad, maybe it takes some getting used to, but i prefer it cuz its bigger than a normal hard T9 keypad. After using virtual keypad for so long i find it hard to message with one hand on normal phone cuz buttons so small
