Guys , I started reading not long ago , may I ask what is the maximum capacity of internal hdd that the ps3 can support ? I'm interested in upgrading my internal hdd to a 7200rpm but have no idea how big . Ps3 uses the same type of internal hdd as nowadays pc which is a 2.5" SATA am I right ?

people have successfully used 1tb 3.5" sata (desktop) hdd connected to ps3 internal hdd port (like this) so there is no known limit of ps3 filesystem yet. ps3 uses 2.5" sata (notebook) hdd.

500gb is a norm nowadays judging from posts in this very thread

the problem might be caused by the bridge. it doesnt matter if it is sata or ide or whatever, because from ps3's perspective, the connected drive is in usb.

Hmm , Thanks for the heads up . I think I'll go for Internal . Not much of a hassle ! Do you guys do it yourself or have someone to do it for you ?

As mentioned by Vorchiel in her PS3 thread that we need to have the Firmware installation in our external drive for installation into the new HDD , Is it possible to just upgrade the HDD and install the firmware via the internet ?

i am planning to upgrade my hdd (now it is too full to even play new games tat required minimun installation), so i was thinking 7200rpm hdd for a try.

Does it have faster loading time compare to the 5400 which come in standard?

the firmware file is needed during the hdd upgrading and at that time, PS3 is not fully-functioning yet so you cant go to the XMB to download the firmware. it must be pre-downloaded beforehands via a pc. any 256MB usb flashdrive will do or you can just use digicam/phones if they support usb mass storage and you dont have any usb flash drive around.

So it's just the latest firmware right ? I Suppose I can't extract it from the Ps3 as I downloaded it using it via the internet ? So you're saying that I must go download it externally on pc and save it on my pendrive. Once the new HDD is in place , Plug in the USB and install it ? Will the PS3 detects it ?

Bro, u gotta format your USB drive to FAT32 beforehand. Then create folders as follows:-

PS3
--> UPDATE

and put the *.PUP file in there.

Yes, its always safe to download the update file (PUP file) on your PC and copy it over to the update folder.
