I am from Penang too and seriously need grooming for my puppy.
But my poor puppy cannot sit in car, she will 'vomit' (her saliva keep pouring out) and I dont know why.
When I send her to her vaccine, it just next road around the corner but she will 'vomit' from the start she sit in car. I wonder she have 'car-phobia'?

Well, I am looking for grooming that able to come my house which offer full set of grooming (maybe) at a reasonable price.
I have phone my nearest grooming center while they offer only RM30 for trimming hair, nail cutting and bathing. *my puppy cannot sit car*.
But now my puppy fur got matted after I change my shampoo! I was so upset when I bath with her, I dare not comb her hair.

At first, I uses a normal puppy shampoo which introduce by the shop assistant, after using it, my puppy got dandruff problem all over her body.
Then my mum friend introduce another shampoo that contain 'sulfur' which they believe it can sure the dandruff problem and keep the ticks away.
Not forgetting to mention that my puppy got ticks, I bought 'Frontline' spray but no effect on my puppy where I have stop using it.
Ended up my puppy got fur matted problem!

May I know what is the best way to cure the matted problem? And also the ticks? It was so heart pain when I saw the stupid ticks is so stupid fat!

Your dog is probably a little car sick, you can get them out of it. Start by getting her to sit in the car with the engine off. Stay with her for a few minutes, give her a few treats and tell her she is good (but don't make a huge fuss or go over the top, let her know that being in the car is a very normal thing), do this a couple of times a day for 3 days). Next turn on the engine and put her in the car, repeat the treat giving and stuff, again for 3 days. Then get in the car with her (engine on) and take a short drive (like up and down your road, or around the block, less than 5 minutes is enough to start with), do this every day once or twice for a week. Slowly start to increase the distance you travel with her in the car and usually most dogs will overcome the car sickness.
Make sure you don't go for a drive with her for at least 2 hours after he eats (as the food can cause her to have more pronounced sickness).

As far as the mats and dandruff goes. If you think a Shampoo is causing skin problems (like the puppy shampoo causing dandruff) try just changing shampoo to a very natural and most importantly fragrance free shampoo before going for something medicated. The sulfur shampoo will dry out the coat and cause the coat to mat faster than it otherwise would (but more about mats later). It is best to try and avoid medicated washes as much as possible for minor problems (such as dandruff) as the skin can build an immunity to them meaning if a more serious problem comes along you need to use a more serious medicated wash.

As far as ticks go. Frontline spray won't be 100% effective unless you get it all over the body (making it quite tricky to use) a better option is to go for one of the spot-on products (Frontline-combo or Advantix). Alternatively you can choose to use Revolution (which prevents ticks, fleas, mites and heartworms).

On to mats. There are only 2 ways to stop mats: Brush your dog regularly or keep the coat very short. Although there are many things that can make mats appear faster (coat condition, coat length, activity level etc.), daily brushing will keep them away no matter what.
If you see/feel mats in your dogs coat, brush them out before bathing, bathing will only tighten the mats and make them harder to remove. If you leave them in longer, eventually they will be impossible to remove (not to mention painful for your dog) and need to be shaved/cut off.

Ya, my first thought is shampoo, now I realize is her fur is too long. According to my mum friend, she said that when she scratch herself will make her fur mats. I think I will have to trim her mats hair part and some of her hair. But she looks so fluffy and cute when she got longer hair. .
I usually I bath with my puppy every 2 days, like if Monday I bath with her, I will bath with her on Thursday. Is it alright to bath with her more often? Cause I cant stand the smell if I bath with her once a week! . My friend bath her dog once a week only, I wonder how is the smell.

Another thing I would like to ask is which dog food is best for poodle? Currently my puppy is eating pedigree and I do not know how good is it. . When I first bought, the shop assistant told me pedigree is too salty. Is it true? Until now I do not know which brand is the best for her. Please advice.

Its not suggest to bath your furkid too frequent as it would deplete healthy oils from the coat and skin, once a week or two weeks is a good one for poodle since i assume you keep your furkid indoor

There is no best food for poodle, the best food is the food which suit the most to your furkid. Pxxxgxxx is one of the lousiest in the market after you getting know how to differentiate good and bad dog food

I felt so bad cause Im actualy feeding my poodle puppy with nasty food. .
I will switch as soon as possible. I think I will switch ti Canidae or Health Food.

Yes, I keep my puppy indoor only. I never bring her go outdoor cause I scared of infection on other dogs or environment.

My puppy usually can poo 3-4 times a day. I wonder is it normal? While her poo is yellow in color, solid type.

haha, its ok, every one starting from null, we learn along the way. I also fed blackwxxd in the first few weeks when my furkid first with me, then i changed to Orijen and never look back, my furkid is doing well with the kibble and always crave for more after finish the meal

If i not mistaken, there is some post suggested that you can use dog fragrance instead of shampoo that keep your dog smell good for long time as the chemical ingrediences in the shampoo isn't good for your dog skin and coat.

Did you dog complete the 3 routine vaccination? Some may suggest not to bring them out to avoid being expose to those potential harms before completed the vaccination. Some may not, i personally bring my furkid out after her 2nd vaccination, of course i took some considerable risk, i was holding her when wandering around, put her in the car and drive around my living area and she also met with my another furkid at my mum's house. I believe in this early time is the best time for my furkid to get used to what will be surrounding her when she gradually grows up. Anway, this is your choice, you can do some research and see which suit you the most, there is no definite right or wrong, do what you comfortable with

My furkid also poo average 3-4 times a day, 1st when she woke up before her breakfast (i will only release the breakfast to her after she poo ), 2nd during late afternoon some time after her lunch and 3rd during late evening some time after her dinner. I think its normal since got input then of course got output
It make sense to say that the poo colour is decided on what your furkid has taken, i also don't know whether yellow is healthy or not, but solid instead of watery is what you want to see. My furkid has dark brown and solid, so far so good

My mum has agreed that will bath her twice a week or we really cant stand the smell. Ohya, any suggestion for shampoo and conditioner for poodle? Maybe the fragrance? I just trim her hair my own yesterday, and is quite short and untidy. (sorry puppy). That was my first time because I really cant stand the mats problem on her body. Now her hair is very smooth and I think is my shampoo problem. Im using the McLee's Sulphur Dog Shampoo. Its produced in Malaysia. I do not know is my mistake when bath with her or is the shampoo problem that make my puppy hair mats. Please advice me.

She has taken her 2nd vaccination and waiting for the 3rd one to finish it. Her last vaccination is on 12 Jan 2011. I have forgotten when is the next dose. Any idea when is the 3rd dose?
My puppy usually walk in my marble floor and refuse to walk on tar road, I assume is too rough for her? So never bring her anywhere, only let her run inside my house.

Sorry, i have no good recommendation for you but i have seen some people suggest to use Pet Esthé, etc. , choose those shampoo which is natural and organic, they are mostly free from added chemicals and will be more gentle for your furkid. Hehe, i have no experince on using fragrance though

She is due for her 3rd injection since your last vaccination is on 12th Jan, its a once a month process for the first three injection and once a year subsequently. Your vet will also provide deworm to your furkid at the same time.

Don't let your furkid walk on the outside ground other than your house until she has finished all the vaccination to reduce the chance of being infected. Personally i hold my furkid during the walk.

If you free, you can read some books or find information from internet to learn more about your little companion, that will be enjoyable

Oh, ya, I able to go to bigger pet shop far from my house this afternoon while lunch break, the shop owner there was very friendly where she answer all my question very patience. She gave me Natural Balance Lamb meal and Brown Rice sample for my dog. While I bought Doggyman vegetable treats for my puppy. But I haven let her eat the treats yet. Must teach her something then give her some treats. . Until now I could not decide which is beat for my toy poodle. I have Orijin, Canidae, Health Food, Acada in the list yet cant find the best one for her.

Ya, I will bring her to her 3rd vacc as soon as in this month.
Yuppy, will search for more info through Internet, really appreciate for you advice.

I agree many places are looking for groomer, but now there are a lot of ppl learning grooming. Soon in the future there will be a surplus of groomers so best to find a good place and continue working there, I guess. However though there may be a surplus in the future, if you're good at what you do you probably won't be jobless.

There should be plenty graduates around that are NOT working as groomers, and I believe this will continue. If petshops is still mushrooming, and more peoples are getting pets, it will still be shortage of groomers, because there is a limit on how many a groomer can do.

Very true. May all pet owners continue loving their dogs and send them for grooming! Wah 3 yrs from now... Wonder how it'll be like when I come back. Pet shop at every corner? LOL

You know what I find interesting these days? I've been doing part time in a friend's shop and one day this customer calls me to groom her dog. She asked if they could stay and watch. I said sure. Of course I thought they just wanted to check and see how I handled their dog, so I thought it was ok.

I arrived late as I sent my mongrel and corgi to the vet so the lady jaga-ing the shop helped me to bath the dog before I got there. Wow, they brought their maid to watch so she could try to groom the dog themselves. For that entire 45 minutes I had a family and maid breathing down my neck, watching every little move I made. I didn't really particularly care about it except at the fact that I knew they were trying to see how it was done so they could attempt it themselves and possibly hurt the dog.

In the end, I under charged them cuz on the phone she told me the breed and said a little bit of trimming, so I gave her the price for that. She said a little trimming so I did the tail, anus area and feet, but during the grooming she asked for a lot more, like trimming the ears, the chest, the butt feathering, the elbow and fore leg feathering etc.

Okay people, first of all, you can watch and try to learn if you like but you probably won't learn a lot by just watching through the glass. It's not a bad thing to try to learn but don't get all confident just cause you've seen it done once or twice. If you hurt your dog, your dog may not be so kind as to let you hurt them again next time. This will also make the groomer's job more difficult as the dog will associate shears(scissors), brushes or nail clippers with pain. They will probably struggle or snap and bite. For dogs that are aggressive or troublesome, be prepared to be charged more for handling and reconditioning.

Secondly, you can ask your groomer about basic things. Some groomers encourage and teach owners to brush and dematt their dogs. This is if you don't want your dog coming back bald all the time. A groomer's time spent on dematting will be extra charge cuz those same hands can be grooming another dog with the time spent dematting. So don't grumble at the extra charge unless it's unreasonably priced.

Thirdly, just cuz it looks easy, doesn't mean it is. I will tell you that first hand. I used to think grooming was such an easy thing to do. Heck, I actually took up grooming cuz I got fed up of my parents not sending their own poodles for grooming! I will tell you, it is NOT as easy as it looks! If it ever was, there won't be academies out there at all for pet grooming!

Lastly, do dogs and cats need to be sent in for grooming? If you have a dog with fur that grows everywhere like a poodle, maltese, schnauzer etc, or a long haired cat that gets matted then YES! They need to be sent at LEAST once every 2 months for a full groom.

Why do we need to spend for professional grooming? I'll tell you why.

Hi all, just wanna ask is there a limit to how short the groomer can shave the sensitive areas of the dog? Such as the belly and private area.

My dog has been feeling very uncomfortable after I sent her for grooming this week, she's in a lot of pain now and has an infection at her private part as well. I'm not sure if it's a cut but my vet say it's most likely a cut due to grooming. She has also been licking and walking very funny for the past few days after grooming. I've stopped her from licking as well.

This is not the first time she was send for grooming. Her last groom was 2 months ago in November at another shop. She was shaved very short that time. She had no issues with her skin the last grooming. This time she develop an infection after 2 days. Is it possible that the groomer trimmed it too short? I have tried a lot of other grooming center but have never experience something like this. When I leave my dog there, I trust that they'll do a good job and know their stuff since they are the professional. I understand some people prefer it to be very botak down under the belly there but I did not request it. All I did was answer "Yes" when the groomer ask me if I wanted to shave her belly.

Please advice.
