Why you should get to know your groomer

This Shih Tzu was sent for a groom. He was super matted & his owner decided to send him to a nearby place for grooming. I have shaved this shih tzu before when he was super matted as a favor whenever I'm free as this shih tzu belongs to a close friend. Proper use of a clipper will not give this kind of results no matter how tangled & matted the dog's fur is.

I do not know the groomer who groomed him but anyone can see it was very painful for him. When I saw him after he came back from grooming I was speechless & very much horrified.

However, these are obvious wounds. What's worse are mentally inflicted wounds. There are groomers that are rough & do not handle the dogs well. The most common mentally inflicted scar is fear of cutting nails. There are many cases of dogs getting aggressive or crying when touching or holding their paws around the nails. This is because while nail cutting the quick gets nicked or cut. The quick is that pink thing that you can see in the dog's nail. You can't see it though in black nails. If you cut it blood will ooze out but it can be stopped by using any type of styptic powder used by groomers & vets. I cut my own dogs nails & they are so relaxed to the point they fall asleep. This is cuz I am very careful not to hit the quick. But if I do, like on my labrador's 1 black nail, I usually coo & calm her down & continue cutting after she's ok. None of my dogs have this phobia so far.

This is a cat's nail but cuz it's very clear, I used it as a reference.

This is just one example. When you send your dog for grooming it's not like sending your clothes to the launderer, ok? Your clothes don't feel pain. So please get to know your groomer & learn to judge for yourself whether that groomer is worth revisiting or not.

Great advice.
And the poor Shih Tzu, it is very clear to see the wounds are clipper cuts from the end of the clipper teeth being jabbed into the skin. Did the owner take him back to the groomer to show them what they had done (that deserves at least a refund!!), or perhaps just take them the pictures, i wouldn't want to make him go back to a place where he has such a nasty experience.
I hope his wounds recover quickly and your friends send him more regularly to a good groomer who will give him the respect and good grooming experience he deserves.

Hi there,

I am from Penang too and seriously need grooming for my puppy.
But my poor puppy cannot sit in car, she will 'vomit' (her saliva keep pouring out) and I dont know why.
When I send her to her vaccine, it just next road around the corner but she will 'vomit' from the start she sit in car. I wonder she have 'car-phobia'?  blink.gif

Well, I am looking for grooming that able to come my house which offer full set of grooming (maybe) at a reasonable price.
I have phone my nearest grooming center while they offer only RM30 for trimming hair, nail cutting and bathing. *my puppy cannot sit car*.
But now my puppy fur got matted after I change my shampoo!  mad.gif I was so upset when I bath with her, I dare not comb her hair.  icon_question.gif

At first, I uses a normal puppy shampoo which introduce by the shop assistant, after using it, my puppy got dandruff problem all over her body.
Then my mum friend introduce another shampoo that contain 'sulfur' which they believe it can sure the dandruff problem and keep the ticks away.
Not forgetting to mention that my puppy got ticks, I bought 'Frontline' spray but no effect on my puppy where I have stop using it.  shakehead.gif
Ended up my puppy got fur matted problem!  vmad.gif

May I know what is the best way to cure the matted problem? And also the ticks? It was so heart pain when I saw the stupid ticks is so stupid fat!

Hope to hear from you all.

Thanks,
Beeisme

Your dog is probably a little car sick, you can get them out of it. Start by getting her to sit in the car with the engine off. Stay with her for a few minutes, give her a few treats and tell her she is good (but don't make a huge fuss or go over the top, let her know that being in the car is a very normal thing), do this a couple of times a day for 3 days). Next turn on the engine and put her in the car, repeat the treat giving and stuff, again for 3 days. Then get in the car with her (engine on) and take a short drive (like up and down your road, or around the block, less than 5 minutes is enough to start with), do this every day once or twice for a week. Slowly start to increase the distance you travel with her in the car and usually most dogs will overcome the car sickness.
Make sure you don't go for a drive with her for at least 2 hours after he eats (as the food can cause her to have more pronounced sickness).

As far as the mats and dandruff goes. If you think a Shampoo is causing skin problems (like the puppy shampoo causing dandruff) try just changing shampoo to a very natural and most importantly fragrance free shampoo before going for something medicated. The sulfur shampoo will dry out the coat and cause the coat to mat faster than it otherwise would (but more about mats later). It is best to try and avoid medicated washes as much as possible for minor problems (such as dandruff) as the skin can build an immunity to them meaning if a more serious problem comes along you need to use a more serious medicated wash.

As far as ticks go. Frontline spray won't be 100% effective unless you get it all over the body (making it quite tricky to use) a better option is to go for one of the spot-on products (Frontline-combo or Advantix). Alternatively you can choose to use Revolution (which prevents ticks, fleas, mites and heartworms).

On to mats. There are only 2 ways to stop mats: Brush your dog regularly or keep the coat very short. Although there are many things that can make mats appear faster (coat condition, coat length, activity level etc.), daily brushing will keep them away no matter what.
If you see/feel mats in your dogs coat, brush them out before bathing, bathing will only tighten the mats and make them harder to remove. If you leave them in longer, eventually they will be impossible to remove (not to mention painful for your dog) and need to be shaved/cut off.
