It doesn't make sense.
So Malindo is handled by experienced people with strict safety procedures and standard while it's parent company Lion Air is not?  rclxub.gif

The thing with Indonesian carriers is that their safety records have always been not as good as other airlines from other Southeast Asia countries. Even Garuda Indonesia, the national airline of Indonesia don't have a very good safety record but they are definitely improving.

It shouldn't be too much a concern for Malindoair because many of the staffs working at Malindoair were ex-MAS and ex-Air Asia employees. Besides, our own Air Asia has a few incidents too where its planes skidded off runway. The first one involving a B737-300 many years ago at Kota Kinabalu International Airport. The more recent one would be the one at Kuching International Airport in year 2011.

Malindo and Lion Air - different managements. Not sure if Malaysia's safety standards are different from those of Indonesia's.

AirAsia expects Indonesia IPO in Q4, to raise $200 mn

Malaysia's AirAsia Bhd aims to raise $200 million in an initial public offering of its Indonesian unit, which will be listed in the fourth quarter, the budget airline's group chief executive officer said on Thursday.

Asked about the IPO, Tony Fernandes told Reuters: "I hope in the fourth quarter. And it'll be very similar size to the Thailand unit's IPO, about $200 million."

ANA May End Partnership With AirAsia for Japan Discount Carrier

ANA Holdings Inc. (9202), which owns a majority stake in a Japanese discount carrier set up in partnership with AirAsia (AIRA) Bhd., said it is considering dissolving the tie-up.
Ending the partnership in the venture, AirAsia Japan Co., is one option and no final decision has been made, Megumi Tezuka, a spokeswoman for ANA, said by phone today. ANA may buy out AirAsia’s 33 percent stake in the venture, which started flights last year, she said.
Tokyo-based ANA would continue operating the business as a low-cost carrier from Narita airport even if the partnership with AirAsia is dissolved, Tezuka said. ANA will acquire AirAsia’s stake in AirAsia Japan, Nikkei reported earlier today, without saying where it got the information...

AirAsia's business model is said to be not well accepted in Japan, yet. Maybe it's a good move to just simply exit the market.

AirAsia to sign US$1bil engine purchase in Paris

AirAsia will sign the deal with CFM International, which is a 50:50 joint venture between General Electric Co (GE) and Snecma.

The engine supplier is the same party for 80 engines the airline had bought last year for its A320 aircraft in a deal which was worth US$1.6bil.

A maintenance, overhaul and repair contract is also likely to be signed for the 60-odd aircraft, according to the sources.

These 60 are part of the 100 additional A320 aircraft the low cost airline had ordered last December, but then it did not pick an engine supplier.

The ordering of the 100 Airbus A320s was part of the airline's strategy to add routes and increase flight frequencies to maintain profitability against intense competition.

AirAsia India team ready for takeoff

AirAsia India moved closer to getting off the ground by appointing S. Ramadorai as its cChairman, ending months-long suspense and having in place the entire top management team, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

A day after getting Tata Group patriarch Ratan Tata as the chief adviser, AirAsia Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes on Monday announced the name of Tata Consultancy Services vice-chairman S. Ramadorai as the chairman of his proposed low-cost airline venture in Mumbai.

Subramanian Ramadorai was also formerly the chief executive of the country's largest software exporter.

Ramadorai is the fourth person from the Tatas to hold a position in airline joint venture after Ratan Tata as chief adviser, and R. Venkataraman (former executive assistant to Ratan Tata) and Bharat Vasani (chief legal counsel of the Tata Group), who are directors on the board.

CIMB Research advises investors to accumulate AirAsia shares

CIMB Equities Research believes that investors should accumulate AirAsia shares on the back of its strong fundamentals.

“Investors should overlook the possibility that the 2Q13 results may not be particularly strong, as traffic volumes were affected by the May 5, Malaysian general election,” it said.

CIMB Research pointed out AirAsia is more than just another low cost airline. It is Asean's largest, most successful, and probably most profitable airline.

It added the Malindo impact will likely be less than feared, and problems in Japan and the Philippines are being tackled.

CIMB Research said it learned the acquisition of Zest Air was yielding results as fleet utilisation was ramped up, and loss-making AirAsia Japan was likely to be terminated soon.

“We maintain our Outperform call and target price (RM4) based on 11 times CY14 price-to-earnings (sector average).

“The key catalyst, in our opinion, is investors' realisation that yield pressure from Malindo will not be as bad as feared, and that AirAsia will still be able to retain its pre-eminent position in Malaysia,” said the research house

Japan's ANA to end join budget airline venture with AirAsia

(Reuters) - Japanese airline ANA Holdings (9202.T) said Tuesday it will end a joint budget airline venture with AirAsia BHD (AIRA.KL).

Started in August 2011, the joint low cost carrier failed to win over Japanese travelers, which ANA has blamed the lackluster performance on poor marketing and a difficult to navigate booking website.

ANA said it will continue to operate the budget carrier as a wholly owned subsidiary.

Air Asia and ANA executives had been unable to find common ground on cost management and other issues.

Thai AirAsia undaunted despite rise in competitors

Thai AirAsia is confident of maintaining its strong performance here this year, despite the looming launch of two more low-cost carriers - Lion Air from Indonesia and VietJetAir from Vietnam.

The two foreign airlines are working with local partners to set up Thai Lion Air and Thai VietJetAir, with an eye to grabbing a slice of the growing domestic pie, fuelled by the tourism boom.

The aviation business would face fiercer competition, fanned by the arrival of Lion Air this year. Budget carriers would definitely outgrow full-service airlines. The segment has grown rapidly from 5 per cent to 51 per cent of the total. Thai Airways International Plc, the flag carrier, will have to revise its strategy to cope with the changing business environment.
