Hi dudes... new here... have been looking around lately to get into the hifi madness... so narrowed down to the Sonus Faber... was auditioning the Grand Piano and the Luito which was great until I made the FATAL mistake of listening to the Guarneri... sort of decided to go with the Guarneri assuming the wifey does not kick up a fuss...

Any advise on a suitable set of pre & power amps to go with the Guarneri? Was listening to my buddy's set up which blew my mind but his is a bit way off my budget - Homage Amati + ARC Reference 40 yr anniversary edition amps.

First of all, wow, you've been a lurker since 2005 and this is your first post haha. Welcome to LYN.

The Guarneris are a great pair of speakers if monitors are your kind of thing. Any advice on pre/amp would be dependent on your (1) budget and (2) type of music that you listen to and of course your (3) sound signature preference. I've read people having great results pairing them with McIntosh MA7000/MA2275/MC275 (I'm partial to Mac as you can see), Pass Labs INT-150, Jadis DA88s and WAVAC MD-805m.

What do you have in mind?

Hi Shuto1... was never an audiophile.. Most of the time thought that the Bose was good enuf... Just that I was introduced and poisoned recently by my buddy who moved into his new house built an AV room and went for broke with the amati and arc amps. Though I have heard of people who spent millions on their system ala mark levinson, classe krell etc. Yada yada...

So the mistake was to follow him around when he went shopping and suddenly my Bose sounded like my iPod.

So since it's my turn to move abodes thought I would splurge a little and stop at that. Was looking at the ARC HD220 Power Amp and the LS27 pre amp. Though I heard the anthems are good as well. Yes yes curse the newbie for being unknowledgeable.. Hehe.. Just asking around... Thanks for the feedback.. Many thanks...

Well, unless you want to do lots of home/leg work, and since you're buying from Perfect Hifi, you can safely go with their recommendation. The HD220 and LS27 will do fine. Unless you want a 'proper' AR tube amp.

Saw a pair of very good condition of used Guarneris with its ori stand at Audio Image in PJ.

I knew someone who owned this model. He is using Krell KCT pre amp with Krell KSA-100. Source is ClearAudio vinyl. He has a group of audiophiles. Suffice to say that he is proud of his system even though it is one of the least expensive among his peers smile.gif

Oh do you enjoy your Travagans more than the 650? You need to start poisoning more headfi users to move on to hifi so you can start the journey together. Makes things more interesting smile.gif Take it slow and enjoy the journey, but don't make the mistake of thinking just 'one step up,' or you'll end up buying and then wanting to change too soon, costing you more $$$ had you just taken the hit at the start.

In my honest opinion, a hybrid is a hybrid and a lady boy is a............... boy ...The HD220 is a good amplifier, but there's always a trade off. Since you're dealing with Alvin, I'm sure he'll be more than glad to let you do an A/B test to compare between the HD220 and the other AR tube amps. See which sound you prefer with what you listen mostly to (classical in this case). Buy with your ears or eyes if you're into tube p0rn smile.gif

Used Guarneris? Nice.. I've never been to Musical Image before.. I need to go one day to pay a visit and see what goodies they have.
Beauty in the eye of the beholder! Glad that he's happy and satisfied with his Guarneri setup.
