a re-release could happen as early as this summer and ADDITIONAL FOOTAGE will be included!!

How MUCH additional footage? It seems that there are two likely scenarios: Adding 10 minutes of scenes (like Tsu Tey's ritual and Jake Sully proving himself to the Na'vi) that have already been through post production (just enough to still allow IMAX 3D to screen it too) *OR* adding 40 minutes of scenes that would have to be processed to be included. I am wagering for the first option but hoping for the second. Realistically though, it will be the 10 minutes. They need something extra for the S3DHD Blu-ray right? The 40 minutes will be going there more than likely.

So what do you think? How much additional footage do you think will make the summer re-release?

“It’s all right on schedule,” said Cameron. “We’ll do the Blu-ray and the standard def DVD April 22nd, that’s our plan as of right now, and that’ll be pretty much bare bones. And then we’ll do a value-added DVD and a 3-D Blu-ray in I think November sometime.”

if dats the case, maybe just wait for the full extended unrated directors cut blu-ray. a year plus down the line maybe.
not that awed by it to go see it again in cinema or splurge more money in cinema

Avatar Blu-ray Officially Announced
Posted March 16, 2010 04:19 AM by Juan Calonge at Blu-ray.com

user posted image

20th Century Fox After weeks of speculation and rumors, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced Avatar on Blu-ray. As James Cameron himself revealed a month ago (see blu-ray.com, February 18), the release date has been set for Thursday, April 22 (Earth Day). In a first for a major theatrical release on Blu-ray, the studio will go Superbit on James Cameron's megablockbuster and release it without any special features of any sort, in order to maximize audio and video quality. A DVD will be included with the BD.

Avatar producer Jon Landau explained to the Los Angeles Times that they told Fox that "we wanted to do something really special and reach for the best presentation of any film in the history of the format." Landau adds, "Everything that is put on a disc takes up room – the menus, the extras, the trailers and studio promotions – and we got rid of all of that so we could give this movie the best picture and sound possible." Extra time and care have been devoted to this project, with the video compression sessions taking six weeks, as opposed to the usual two weeks for a typical theatrical release.

A multidisc "ultimate version" Blu-ray is planned for November. Details will be given during a press event in March 23, which will be attended by Landau and Cameron.

Regarding a 3D release, Fox sources again denied reports that it would come out later this year. The Digital Bits hazards a guess that it will probably come "in a third dip a year or two from now", once there is a market for 3D on Blu-ray.

Avatar release dates in other territories are:

* Belgium: April 21
* France: April 21
* Netherlands: April 21
* Spain: April 21
* Brazil: April 22
* Canada: April 22
* China: April 22

* Denmark: April 27
* New Zealand: April 28
* Norway: April 28
* Sweden: April 28
* Australia: April 29
* Finland: April 30
* Italy: May 6

Avatar Blu-ray Detailed, Gets 1.78:1 Video
Posted March 17, 2010 04:11 AM by Juan Calonge

20th Century Fox Release details have begun to surface regarding the upcoming Blu-ray edition of Avatar, which was announced yesterday. Not regarding the special features (as there will be none), but the audio and video presentation. An interesting development is that the feature aspect ratio of this edition will be 1.78:1, as seen in most 3D theatrical projections.

Months before the theatrical release of the movie, James Cameron informed that Avatar was being shot in "a 16:9 ratio." 3D theatrical exhibition would be in 1.78:1 in the theaters that could project it at that ratio; for 2D theatrical exhibition, a cinemascope-ratio (2.39:1) picture was being extracted from the 1.78:1 frame.

Cameron explained: "I actually think that the extra screen height really works well in 3D. It really pulls you through the screen. So I'm actually going back on years of kind of eschewing the kind of 1.85 format, now saying 1.85 – or actually, it's 1.78:1 – actually works really well in 3D. But only in 3D. I still like the scope ratio compositionally for flat projection."

Ultimately, 1.78:1 is also being used for the Blu-ray (which, at least in this edition, is only 2D). Note that, as the picture was originally shot in 1.78:1, no image information is being lost; on the contrary, the 1.78:1 frame shows more information on the top and bottom than the scope-ratioed image.

Audio will be presented in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio for the original soundtrack only. Localized dub tracks will be encoded in lossy audio (DTS or Dolby Digital, depending on the territory).

Finally, MSRP has been set at $39.99. Most web retailers already have it up for preorder.

The movie was created in 1.78 aspect ratio, so this is great news.

The 2.39:1 ratio in the theaters (except IMAX screens) were cropped from 1.78:1 so we didn't see the movie in full frame. We were missing 25% of the picture for the whole 166 minutes.

Brilliant. 1.78:1 ratio is what the film was filmed at... and we give to see this exact frame ratio on the Blu-Ray. Brilliant!

Can't wait for it... definitely a "Must Buy"!

On Avatar 2: The fastest we could imagine making another film is three to three and a half years, from the moment we start, and we’re not planning on starting tomorrow.

On the Avatar Special Edition Blu-ray:

You’ll be able to do a branching experience where you can select if you want to watch the basic movie, if you want to watch the movie with six minutes of footage added back in, or if you want to watch an earlier cut of the film that has 30 or 35 minutes of additional footage. It will be an unrecognizable movie. You’ll be going on a journey into a whole different version of Avatar. And some of the scenes won’t be done because we won’t have the budget to finish 20 or 30 minutes of CG stuff. We’re taking the Greatest Hits six minutes and finishing that

Avatar Sequel to Focus on Pandora's Ocean

With Avatar hitting Blu-ray and DVD on Thursday, the Los Angeles Times talked to James Cameron about the highest-grossing movie of all time (it's at $2.717 billion now). In the interview, Cameron revealed that the Avatar sequel will focus on the ocean of Pandora while they'll explore more of the Alpha Centauri AB system in a third film. Here's an excerpt:

We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That's not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film. I've already announced this, so I might as well say it: Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I'm going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won't be a rain forest. I'm not saying we won't see what we've already seen; we'll see more of that as well.

While Thursday's release doesn't have any features, Cameron says that we'll get an additional six minutes in theaters for a re-release of the film in August before a 4-Disc Blu-ray/DVD set hits stores in November:

We're working on finishing an additional six minutes of the film -- which includes a lot of Weta work -- for a theatrical re-release in August. We were sold out of our IMAX performances right up to the moment until they were contractually obligated to switch to "Alice in Wonderland," so we know we left money on the table there. And the 3-D really helped "Avatar" right up until the moment that it hurt it. And it hurt it at the moment "Alice" and then "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Clash of the Titans" came in and sucked up all the 3-D screens. We went from declining 8% a week to declining 50%. Clearly, it wasn't market forces directly; it was the availability of theaters. So we're going to wait until there's a time to come back in, inject the new footage into the mix and see if we can interest people in the "Avatar" experience in theaters.
