If your point is concerning the movement of platter arms/motor parts during reformatting sessions in a hdd, I'm afraid you might have your facts wrong.

How does reformatting shorten a hdd's lifespan? Care to explain?

Windows Server 2008 is NOT meant for home users.

It is for, well, server usage. You can enable Aero, even Media Center on it (by tweaking of course)...

Essentially, it is built upon Vista.

I don't see a reason to use it.

And its 'Windows Server 2008' not 'Windows 2008'...

It is a myth. No such thing. I even wrote an article about it. It is 'a' hard disk process. Its not like little men are scrubbing and scratching on the surface of the hard disk.
Edit : I can give the FULL dose of this explanation...

1. nod.gif, yeap true... the one and only reason why i use WinServer 2008 is because... it's free for download, use it for 60 days with 240 days maximum to try, after that... smile.gif then Vista...

and my POV on WinXP vs Vista (eg: WinServer 2008)(i know... long time debate), but i feel Vista faster...

2. seconded... it's a myth smile.gif

can use free software on 2008
currently using openoffice & gimp in it, no problem

the only major problem is antivirus or other software that have separate desktop or server ver (eg : diskeeper, etc.), need get server ver only

compatible security software list : http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpres...urity-software/

I don't think you are able to get Audio Acceleration on Win Server 2008 IIANM. They pretty much scaled down the multimedia options(and anything not wanted or unrelated to Server 2008) to increase reliability. But i could be mistaken.

im not sure if this helps : http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpres...d-acceleration/

maybe Audigy series need extra addon for vista like the X-Fi series called "Creative ALchemy"
"Creative ALchemy" are given freely for X-Fi, but for Audigy you need to buy it if not mistaken

some notes on audio acceleration for vista : http://connect.creativelabs.com/alchemy/default.aspx

ALchemy for Audigy - Free Edition

Creative has reviewed the discussions concerning ALchemy for Audigy on this forum and others.  A new free version of the ALchemy application for Audigy owners will be released in the week of May 19th, 2008.  Audigy owners that have already purchased ALchemy are being offered a refund of the purchase price of $9.99.  To request a refund, please visit here.  Complete the email form specifying the email address you used to purchase ALchemy For Audigy.  The refund will be made to the credit card that was used for the original purchase.  Please allow 30 days for the refund to take place.  This offer is valid until 30th June 2008.

The ALchemy application is being provided independent of the drivers, as it is not a driver.  The new version of the application will work with both X-Fi and Audigy series products, and we have added additional updates relating to some popular games that behave differently on the X-Fi chipset as compared to the Audigy chipset. We would suggest you download the latest version from Creative.com when it becomes available.  Thanks for all of your support and feedback.

The Soundblaster Team

yes... initially the main reason i didn't upgrade to Vista is because of this la... but now, due to our ISP's high latency... so got time play with Windows Server 2008 tongue.gif, installed and voila... BF2 menu said it's on Hardware, but in-game... doh.gif shakehead.gif

doh.gif, does anybody else using this good OS? IMO... Windows Server 2008 is a good OS compared to Vista Ultimate which is bloated with other things... with Server 2008, we can even add like Vista Ultimate if you want to... icon_idea.gif

it's not like i'm saying Windows Server 2008 is different from Vista, in fact... i know for a fact that Windows Server 2008 build from Vista, but i think... Windows Server 2008 is faster icon_idea.gif

once mislead, always mislead. blind leading the blind.
For Bill's sake, this is a server operating system, not mean for daily desktop use.
do no compare what you have for server operating system with a desktop operating system.
Even though it's based on the same exact kernel, the components are different, the usage is different.

Conclusion - Windows Server 2008 is a GOOD SERVER OPERATING SYSTEM, GOD DAMN IT!

i dont think it is wrong to use server os for desktop use, even though it not ment for it
at least it serve well, but not quite practical
its like driving a lorry w/o its trailer to pasar instead of riding motorcycle tongue.gif

yeap that's true... about the compatibility, of course there's some but i tell you...

of all game i tried...

Battlefield 2 - got notice dialog "this game built on x86... bla bla bla", (installing on x64) but the installer still run and the game will run and there's an error (again... tongue.gif) about the gameux.dll, but still... can be downloaded from other site or just copy paste from other Vista user smile.gif... then voila... thumbup.gif
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 - no problem
Crysis - no problem
Company of Heroes - no problem
Need For Speed Most Wanted - might say... there's incompatiblity, the game will run, but seems like i can't save a profile doh.gif
Counter Strike Condition Zero - same as Battlefield 2, got gameux.dll missing, but still can be fixed just like fixing BF2 game
Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare - no problem

for those on Audigy series sound card (Audigy, Audigy 2, Audigy 2 ZS (Platinum/Pro), Audigy 2 SE... any Audigy series), there is a way to enable full use of hardware acceleration on Vista/Server... and it's work for me that i'm no need to get other sound card or newer sound card sweat.gif

* updates *

here's what i did so far... now looking for setting up dreamscene... smile.gif

Wootz, windows activated! blush.gif But on a poor specs rig. doh.gif

Everything are running fine currently except the nvidia control panel which will crash when I don't really know when and also after LAN transferring. I would say performance is on par/faster than XP but not the boot time(after activated theme/sidebar).

Another thing is that, surfing speed is faster and sometimes burst speed occured while downloading!(maybe those are illusion by my mind/self consolation perhaps) laugh.gif
I didn't try gaming thought, as I'm not into it. But one disadvatage, no home/personal anti-virus(popular ones) allowed on windows server. cry.gif

I hate vista before this, but I've to used them when my friends and family need my helps. Oh well, WS2k8 really surprised me. I like it, and I love it even more. rclxm9.gif

edit:

can grab the free 60 days (max 240 days) trial iso here : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/cc137123.aspx
no serial key needed
recommended use enterprise edition

to convert from 2008 to ala vista, follow this guide : http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpress/
follow guide 1-12, plus "Disable Data Execution Prevention" and "Missing gameux.dll"

torrent user also gonna love this os, because no need to tweak tcp/ip & max half-connection like in vista

can use vista drivers for 2008, tested

compatible antivirus, tested:
- nod32 business edition
- avg business (need reconfirmation)
