"There is no question that many enjoyed the convenience of at-home activation, but we also found that many others wanted to complete purchase and activation in one step so they could walk out of the AT&T store with their iPhone up and running. We have decided to take the latter approach and we think customers will like it. It will be especially helpful if any questions or issues arise during activation. They can be resolved on the spot and in-person.

This is the way our wireless phones have been activated for years and customers have been very happy with it." (Engadget)

This is what AT&T said about activating in store..

Meh, just say you dont want us to jailbreak the phone and ruin your business

maybe Apple will roll out a "3G Video Call Dock" (as an accessory, making extra money again!)

when you want to do video call, you put your iphone on the dock (nokia has been doing that since their nokia 6630 era) rolleyes.gif

p0or u.. have a look here biggrin.gif

"So for those of you wanting unlocked phones you'll be paying the actual price of the iPhone 3G, plus whatever termination fees there are. One AT&T executive said that there was a 30 day non-activation penalty, and a early contract cancellation fee. They appear to still be working on exactly what these penalties will be though. This non-activation penalty seems contradictory to not having to sign a contract though. Guess we'll just have to wait until July 11th for them to sort this out."

If Apple US require you to activate on-the-spot, i presume the same practice will be implemented elsewhere too. Now there is really no way to get away with the 2-year contract with the telco without getting fined/penalised/charged in one way or another.

I don't know what are the implications of asking a friend to sign-up and activate the phone and subsequently not paying the monthly bill. I don't think we could subscribe to the plan ourselves too without having a permanent address in the country. If that's the case, we can't be driving down to Singapore, register with their telco and drive home with a spanking new 3G iPhone.

Having said that, i feel the current gen iPhone still has its resell value...at least for now.

anyway its still too early to say right now..lets wait till july 11 where all the details will be clear.

@199USD its dirt cheap i won't mind paying extra if the resellers can bring in the phone.
