Wimax is designed to be low latency.

According to this:
http://www.wimax.com/education/wimax/qos
majority of the latency incurred are on the ISP's back-end infrastructure.

those who has already tried p1 wimax, how does the unit works? Do you have to put in a simcard/accesscard or anything to show that you're a user? Or is it just a username & password kinda thing?

Hmm, low latency ... well, the latency is considered low is compared to other wireless technology like HSDPA, EVDO, Wifi etc. But most people here compare with wired line connection ... for instance ferari is a fast car but you compare it to airplane.

They said it's plug and play meaning no username/password and simcard. The username/password probably already configured in the device. No sim card slot.

It looks as if p1 w1max gives good speed at gombak.

im still waiting for my trial modem...
i called them again, and they said they'll check.

this is taking forever. and the most disappointing thing is that they told me that i would get it last week.

Stay genting klang btw.

I have been using p1 wimax for 2 days now ..... youtube is fast but downloading torrents is kinda pathetic .... only once I was getting 100 kb/s ... the rest of the time ranges from 5-10 kb/s .... and good thing someone pointed out the fair usage where p1 wimax limits it to 20 gb per month.

I still have about about 13 days if I chose to terminate the service to get back my refund.

Hmm i see.. then in the future when centrino 2 is available for laptops, is it possible to use p1 w1max without the modem? AFAIK centrino 2 laptops will come with a wimax modem in it as well right?

GSM also has 900Mhz and 1800Mhz.
WCDMA has 1900Mhz and 2100Mhz.
WiMAX 802.16e has 2.3Ghz and 2.5Ghz.

Different countries prefer to use different spectrum bands due to availability of the spectrum.

Malaysia previously (before WiMAX arrival) has gave out 2.5Ghz to company like Time, Maxis, Redtone, etc which is not even utilized. Now WiMAX in Malaysia cannot be deployed in the 2.5Ghz. Thanks to those leechers.

what's the difference if wimax in malaysia is on the 2.5ghz and not 2.3ghz? is there a difference anyway?

It works similiar to Cable broadband. Which assigned with a MAC address and get a Static IP from the P1. So, it dont have any username, password. Everything just plug and play like a cable broadband.

Do you ever wonder why your laptop can support Wifi? That's because Intel Centrino chip has embedded wifi capability in it. Similarly, in Intel Centrino 2, Intel will embed Wifi+WiMAX capability. You won't need a WiMAX modem to use the WiMAX service.

Sprint Xohm in USA is on 2.5Ghz while Malaysia P1 W1MAX is on 2.3Ghz.

At the moment, devices used in USA will not be able to be used in Malaysia, one of the reasons would be the different in frequency spectrum supported.

In term of system performance, they ain't any but in term of devices cost, well, 2.5Ghz demand will be higher, supply will be higher, then cost will be lower.

In the future all the devices will be in dual band 2.3/2.5 Ghz.

Well, true but not entirely true.

The reason why 3G is expensive mainly due to the chipset used by WCDMA which is monopolized by one single company called Qualcomm.

WiMAX is following the footstep of DSL where any chipset maker can produce their own chip as long as it's complied with the standardization (for WiMAX, that would be WiMAX Forum). This could bring down the overall price of WiMAX devices.

But I don't think RM999 for a WiMAX modem is cheap, unless it can be used in any other WiMAX network in the world. Not going to buy something that doesn't have resell value wink.gif

really? what a letdown. Only 20GB per month. I really hate this fair policy usage. They should have state it next to the plan. Not in T&C.

Why limit the bandwidth to packages if there are limitation on the 20GB?

I don't quite get what you're trying to say. Anyways, what I was saying was, they should advertise it clearly that you can only use 20GB of data every month. Can someone confirm from the T&C that p1 only limit up to 20GB? What happen after that?

I thought that they will throttle down the speed or something ... anyway I called the customer service and they said the 20gb thingy does not apply to the unlimited packages .... anyway they can say anything now ... I am still trying out the service smile.gif

According to their WiMAX Terms&Conditions
SCHEDULE 2, Section 2.3 says that Each subscriber's total usage per month shall not exceed 20 Gigabytes of data volume transmitted (total upload and download usage).

YES! then u know, should we listen to their customer service or their black and white Terms & Conditions. blush.gif

is normal for ISP, not fully impose the policy on the xxGB limit.

reason, they need more customer.

when thing get bad on cell tower, majority user suffering slow speed.

the ISP can anytime impose the policy on the xxGB limit. you can't complain, because you had sign the t&c. cry.gif

this is to protect them self(ISP) & apply for all ISP. accept str3@my* did a smarter move throttle speed laugh.gif

just refer few page back, one user have explain when "the throttle kick-in"

Yeah that is what I thought ... since it is B&W .... if anything goes wrong they will refer back to the T&C ..... I have a feeling that I will be terminating the service soon .... it gets disconnected when I close my windows ... duh ... I have to readjust for the best position for the signal to kick back in ..... so sensitive ..... I think I will stick to Streamyx for now and upgrade to 1 mb/s smile.gif

There are currently two types of service:

3G is using the fair usage policy where they give people 3.6Mbps with maximum capacity where & when it is possible. P2P is throttled. To me, it makes sense.

Streamyx is selling based on different bandwidth packages and they are not capping to a maximum capacity. P2P is throttled. To me, it is also makes sense.

P1 is selling based on different bandwidth packages but they are capping to a maximum capacity. P2P is throttled. To me, it doesn't make sense.

It is not very fair to people who subscribe to 400kbps package to be capped at 30GB similar to those subscribe to 2.4Mbps package.

Although I understand that if P2P is throttled, it's quite unlikely the montly usage will go beyond 30GB (for majority users), I just don't like the idea that I'm being restricted smile.gif
