Just for good looking?
Why i ask this, this is because many people after change the sport rim, the car become no power.
It's true?
For an example stock 14" to 16", 17", 18"
They notice that more bigger the rim more less power the car. It's true?

If ppl changing to bigger rim and it is MALAYSIA made or TAIWAN made.. then the reason should be for COSMETICS PURPOSE and PERFORMANCE when CORNERING, also TIGHT BUDGET.
But, if ppl changing to bigger rim and it is JAPAN made which is light compare to TAIWAN.. then the reason is for a PERFORMANCE, BETTER CORNERING, GOOD LOOKING and off course they have BIG BIG MONEY. |

bigger rims & wider tyres give u more traction and road hold due to surface contact. layman calls it grip.
americans calls it bling. malaysians calls it beng. so if u want to bling or beng your vehicle up pls feel free to do so as it is now a free country. |

I change from 14'inch to 15inch rim because,
- Wan use wider tire (more traction) - 14inch steel rims is heavier - Want put bodykit (bodykit without sport rims, it look ah beng and ugly) This post has been edited by singchaii: Mar 10 2008, 03:28 PM |

wait.. i think im wrong..
example.. 225/50/16 The 225 indicates this tire is 225 millimeters across from the widest point of its outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall when mounted and measured on a specified width wheel. This measurement is also referred to as the tire's section width. The 50 indicates that this tire size's sidewall height (from rim to tread) is 50% of its section width. The measurement is the tire's section height, and also referred to as the tire's series, profile or aspect ratio. The higher the number, the taller the sidewall; the lower the number, the lower the sidewall. We know that this tire size's section width is 225mm and that its section height is 50% of 225mm. sori ya. |

My Waja using 16" only. Cannot afford 17" as the tyre is more xpensive. I prefer to use 16" branded tyre rather than 17" cap ayam. One trick is to choose sportrim that looks bigger, no deepdish or 2 piece design as it would look smaller.

When you change to bigger rims, the sidewall thickness needs to be reduced to fit in the wheel arch.
The thinner the rubber, the less comfy it gets |

i reli think that people shouldnt upsize their current rim to much bigger size... if for looks, they can just change to nice rims with same dimension.. the bigger the rim is, the lesser power your car and the worst your F/C. not worth it at all

ok..i got 1 Q. when we go for smaller rims..we are looking for performance & when we go for bigger rims we are looking for appearance.
Let's talk about performance..we know that smaller means more pickup..& bigger means more 'lajak'..so the benefits for both pickup & lajak please.. |

Does bigger rims always means you have to sacrifice the performance part? This post has been edited by bearbear: Jun 1 2008, 12:21 AM |

Bigger doesn't always mean worse performance. I swapped from standard 17' cast wheel to 18' forged wheel. 8kg per wheel for the forged 18's vs 17's which was ~10kg, and the car handles better, takes off better, better braking, fuel consump and overall feels more light footed.
So try to go with light and strong wheels. The benefits are more than just cosmetics. Best is forged alloy wheels which are much lighter and stronger than cast alloy wheels. I bought them mildly used from a buddy in Singapore and got a good deal. Retail is about SGD850 per wheel, which isn't too bad for forged wheels. E.g. 19' Neez forged wheel ~USD1250 per wheel eek.

Change sportrim for what?
1st is PERFORMANCE, 2nd is LOOK. Looks good but performance su*k, FC su*k, tyre price su*k. What for? Saga 1.5 oem 13" rims. Change to 15 sparco racing(japan). Lighter than my oem. Perform better cornering, abit +top n same FC. So, do i made good choice for my penny? u answer me. |

I change from 17" to 19". Sure feel heavy when hitting the accelerator.
Increase of fuel consumption is definitely and added advantage, Looks and attracts girls. Not so actually. Bragging rights?18" 19" doesn't look so much different. Wasted and burn you pocket, a definitely YES. Added on September 9, 2008, 4:42 am QUOTE(GeekinE90 @ Jun 3 2008, 08:36 PM) Bigger doesn't always mean worse performance. QUOTE(cwd8769 @ Mar 13 2008, 08:00 AM) Then why all sport car use big big rim and thinner tyre? i suggest u downgrade to 11" rim.... for better performance(top speed could reach 190/km easily!! ) and superb FC! of course u could enjoy smoothest ride as well Added on March 13, 2008, 8:02 am I notice many ppl downgrade from 18" 17" or 16" to 15"... so i think 15" is most suit to me juz not so good look than 16" 17" 18" rim |

changing to the same size but lighter rim may help 'a lil' in fc.
changing to lighter rims with wide profile tyre will help 'a lil' in cornering stability. changing to rims with low profile tyre without additional works on the suspension system will results in bumpy ride over potholes / speed bump. beside the rims, tyres' thread and functionality will help big time too conclusion; change wisely. practicle and functionality comes 1st. looks can wait... but more people will go for better looks. bling bling , huh! |

You can see for yourself that no cars in the track would use big rims. That already tells it doesn't give you performance difference. I like to pimp my ride these days and performance comes 2nd (although important)

I like to pimp my ride these days and performance comes 2nd (although important) and they don't use stock rims either. that tell something about the functionality i mentioned about track cars is different from our daily car. different rims to cater for different profiles of tires give more dimension to overall riding experience / stability. and there is this suspension system that need to be address as well. btw, spotted p.diddy ride |

Obviously I would know the differences and for me pimping my ride today doesn't mean I haven't tried or learned anything about performance cars when I was younger. I'm just sharing the fact that bigger rims gives nothing more than looks and that's a reality.
When we start talking about stability of the car, it's more than just rims and tyres. What the thread starter wants to know is the purpose of bigger rims so I try to make it simple. |

QUOTE(shawn-mode @ Sep 9 2008, 05:41 AM) I change from 17" to 19". Sure feel heavy when hitting the accelerator. Best to get it from Singapore - Leong Seng in Ubi. Here you have to specially order from guys like Stanford Tyres which takes ~3-4 months and cost a premium compared to Singapore. Worth a road trip to Singapore over the weekend to buy the Volk Progressiv MEs. They are really strong and light wheels. Check out this video on how Rays Wheels are made and the difference between Forged vs. Cast manufacturing process.Increase of fuel consumption is definitely and added advantage, Looks and attracts girls. Not so actually. Bragging rights?18" 19" doesn't look so much different. Wasted and burn you pocket, a definitely YES. Added on September 9, 2008, 4:42 am Nice rims you have there mate. Care to share where you bought that? This post has been edited by GeekinE90: Sep 10 2008, 07:50 PM |
