Hi, i am also planning to visit to penang next month. the purpose of going to penang is to have the durian fair and good food there. any recomendation for the durian stall at balik pulau and good food? thank you.
*
FYI this year many durian orchard dun have so much stock. Some NO stock at all. Cos of this many 'bad' middlemen 'import' durian from other states to sell in Balik Pulau doh.gif
So do be careful ya?

You can try Tanjung Bungah Hotel / Paradise / Copthorne Orchid Hotel, not sure about the price of the sea sport.

There are more hotels who have their own beach, or you can rent an apartment at Rasa Sayang and walk to the sea smile.gif

Tanjung Bungah Hotel is close for major renovation!

Durian no more in season.
Most of the durian available come fr other states. You can try in the stall in anson road but prepare to pay high price.

Seafood in georgetown? Try the "under the tree" shop in front of the Pg ferry.
Or if you are rich then try the Bali hai restaurant in Gurney Drive.

Georgetown City, kinda near to Gurney drive only right?
*
near is relative!
it is too far too walk there.

The Historical places of interest are near to it, and also many food outlets and night spots.

are those famous eating places (dim sum, char kuey tiao, asam laksa, cendol n etc) opened during CNY? i plan to go on 5th or 6th day of CNY.

any hotels to recommend which are easily accessible to those places? if within talking distance will be better.. budget: ~RM150/day.

thank you in advanced for all the useful info..
*
Most are open cos this is the time to cut... errr ... serve their famous dish to tourist!

talking distance? Do not think have any, but if you mean walking distance, you can use this to search >> http://www.agoda.com/asia/malaysia/penang....tMzlhcTf1tW4A2Y as a reference point and work from there.

Big mistake by state govt to change the roads into one way again in kelawei and burmah road. This have shown the weakness in the road planning.
*
If never change, it is even worst.
Moreover, teething problems are expected.
Dun forget the new mall is open next to Gurney Mall and it is the Raya break!
Burmah no jam, smooth.
Jams are at Kelawai, Mount Eskine, Tanjung Tokong and certain stretch of Gottlieb Road.
Most of the jams cause by inconsidate drivers or sesat drivers and the timings of the traffic lights.

Planning to go to Penang with my friends for a vacation. About 10 of us and we plan to stay in a nice hotel by the sea. Currently looking at Hard Rock Hotel and Holiday Inn, both about RM400 per night for 2 person.

Anyone have experiences in these 2 hotels? We're going by car but if we can we want to stay in a hotel which allows us to visit Gurney area and some other nice places (planning for 4d3n or 3d2n) easily.

also, how is the weather like in 3rd week of Jan?
*
If you stay in Holiday Inn, you still will be visiting the Hard Rock hotel, so may as well stay in Hard Rock since same price.

Anyone have experiences in these 2 hotels? specifically wat you wan to know about these hotel?

If I'm not mistaken you can get a free shuttle to Gurney Plaza from Hard Rock... but do call them 1st on this arrangement and times.

I am visiting Penang in October for a few days.

I am familiar with the island, been there many times. However, I wouldn't where to start looking for nice coffee places in Georgetown or at other areas on the island. Can you guys/gals recommend me a few places with great coffee and a good vibe?
*
Penang not famous for coffee... more for street food.
Are you are looking for cakes, bread, pastries, tea and coffee?

What do you meant by good vibe? hmm.gif

not worth it even if you have a car - too much jam and traveling time.
