Hi! I'm a noob here.

Planning to spend my Xmas in Hat Yai, and have booked 4 nights @ Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel (any comments?).

Have been pondering on the mode of travel. Since there’s no direct flight to Hat Yai from Kuala Lumpur, I guess I will have to make it there by land. These are my options: -

• Train
• Bus
• Self-drive

I’ve been told the train trip will take longer and it’s tiring. Traveling by bus is faster. Alternatively I could also drive all the way to Hat Yai, or drive to Penang and take the shuttle from Butterworth to Hat Yai.

Since I’ll be traveling with my family (wife & son), which mode of land travel would be best, and most comfortable?

Thanks in advance.

Drive there, if u know the way in hatyai. i used to drive there...coz been there many times. If not, catch a bus. Forget about taking trains...takes u ages to reach Hatyai. If u take the Express Bus, it will stop you somewhere near the Lee Grden Hotel. Walking distance i can said.

Lee Garden Hotel was the tallest building in hatyai City and the place is quite nice...altho i heard someone said its haunted (btw, which hotel is not haunted right?) Lobby was on the 10th Floor and the cafe was there too....shopping complex was just down stair....food stall is all around Lee garden area. Quite convienent i can said.

Anymore things u wanna know?

My advice drive car till Penang den change to hatyai shuttle van. 1st this wont make u tired and go tru custom is much more faster.

Dun even think so taking train unless u have plenty time to spare. As for bus, for my exp it took me 9 hours from hatyai - KL, sit till ur buttock pain.

The places ur staying is quite happening at nite got nite market juz outside Lee Garden. If u want to go to morning market juz take a tut tut (remember to bargain)less than 5 min drive.

I believe Xmas will be a super peak season in Hatyai so be prepare to have a long queue/jam at the custom.

Hi all,

I went to Hatyai in January 2008(before the petrol hike) for 3D2N by package from Pearl Holiday, Kajang. The journey was like 7 hours from KL.

Pearl Holiday package is inclusive of ;
-return bus to Hatyai(40 seater bus)
-Accomodation for 2 night at Hatyai Central(very nice)
-A guide in the bus to teach you about Hatyai and guide you along the way.

The package is only RM198(not inclusive of tipping). The current price is RM218 because of the petrol hike.

The Hatyai Central is nearby to many attractions in walking distance like the morning market, Odeon shopping centre, those many shops selling Hatyai goods nearby Lee Garden and at nite you can enjoy nice food. Theres a 7-11 and pharmacy around the corner. You can even get to the main market by tuk tuk for about RM2 per person.

Actually nearby the Hatyai Central theres some tour and bus company that will provide you with local tour. Theres one day tour to a temple and beach(I forgotten the name of the place) for RM48 per person last time. If you can get more people to join you to fill up a luxury air-cond van, then it will be cheaper.

Besides that Hatyai also is the point where you can get bus to Koh Samui. If I am not mistaken, the price of the bus(air cond, luxury, VVIP type)+accomodation+tour is only about RM400++. But make sure you can stand the back breaking 12 hour journey.

The goods that you must get your hands on is ;
-dried longan meat
-fish maw
-bird nest(make sure you saw what they pour into the bottle)
-Zebra brand stainless steel pots(at the main market)
-cashew nuts
-kuih kapit

Just drive up, it's faster than you think. I"ve blogged about my trip to Hatyai, let me know if you want to read it. And try not to say in Lee Gardens if you can, it's just too crowded.

Dun even interested in the temples..So I din visit any temples there  blush.gif ..but for sure u can see the new big fat Buddha at the back of Tesco..which is not far away from Hatyai Centre. Anyway tesco is located on the eastern side of the city ~2 or 3KM away from Lee Garden junction

Pubs..not my taste also but u can find more pubs, agogo bars in Danok which is walking distance from Bkt Kayu Hitam rather than Hatyai...It seemd like all the chicken farms hv relocated closer to M'sian border!! drool.gif  drool.gif ....Danok from a small Shanty village in early 90' now is the triving town wth lotsa of niteclubs, bars & chicken...probably to cater for day Ah Pek from Kedah... biggrin.gif

Somebody said can drive car to there one and do anyone know how much money need to bring to go there without buying things(only for entertainment).Duration is about 4 days. I heard ppl said u bring rm1000 for 3 days or 4 days can live like a king is it true? But my main purpose open this thread is to know how to get there and i dun want follow travel agent to go there coz they wont bring u go clubbing 1, they only bring u go sight seeing and eat only.

i think the safest is going to hatyai..

if u wanna go to hatyai u can go by KTM train, drive urself or by bus or by plane..

bring RM1k and hope u will be treat like king? can dream on je la bro.. let say if want to book ayam (the good 1) almost cost u 2000 bath (=RM200).. if u are lucky enough u can bring her back to ur hotel room (that will cost u double).. & for good hotel the price is same like it in our country. thailand is not that cheap..

but if u wanna hang around experience something "different".. hatyai can be a so called destinasi bajet.. can ayat some local girl & bring her to ur lousy hotel (RM30 per day).. try siam girl.. haha.. minum there also not very cheap.

i suggest u LABUAN!! haha its heaven.. smile.gif

JKKT,

Southern Thailand is no longer cheap as 10-20 years ago.. Infact due to the influx of M'sian & Singaporean buayas, Hatyai food, & even essential is much more expensive than Bangkok!! infact the outside food is more expensive than KL unless u eat inside Tesco or hypermart food courts!

Anyway, RM1K yes probably enuf..but u won't live like a King...

you should also know that nowadays, the shop owners in southern thailand is more "lansi" already. Nowadays, you have to buy things at "thier" price. Not "ours". Negotiating skill is pretty much useless.

Disregarding the dissapoinment of overall pricing, there are few interesting attractions there too but u really need to drive in to experience those attrractions unless u willing to pay the daily taxi/tuk-tuk rate?

Historical sites/temples:

Tourist attractions (newer):

BTW, the above website is also one of the best hotel booking website in Thailand.
