no such thing. Just say you can't cope up w/ chinese ed so you changed to Eng to hope for better one but you phailed anyway. laugh.gif

It's mostly the case of Chinese people change to English-Eds and stopped using their mother tongue (The Chinese language), due to their perception of how "rural", "crude", "peasant-like" it is.

How many English-Eds have changed to Chinese-Eds and actually stopped using the English language due to the perception of how "bossy", "arrogant", and "know-it-all" the language is?

QUOTE(M1dN1ght @ Dec 16 2009, 06:05 PM)
Then that's the problem of the people who do not know how to embrace their roots. People not speaking their own mother tongue mostly happen naturally, such as not growing up with it, etc, not because they see it as "rural", "crude", or "peasant-like" like you did.

I don't see how picking up a new language means abandoning the previous one. Let's take your point as an example, let's say i see the Chinese language as rural, crude, and peasant-like, must i stop using it just for the sake of using the so-called "better" English language? Of course not, i will still continue to use and learn it so i can use it whenever needed or necessary in the future, alongside with having wider knowledge, vocabulary and point of view. But let's just say that it can only be accomplished by a more intelligent person with larger brain capacity, not a root-betrayer and vain person like you.

And no, just to let you know, i'll never acknowledge English as the so-called "language of intelligence" (that you mentioned a few months ago) because i know many non-English words that do not exist in the English dictionary.
*
That's because you never really understand the one-sided situation that happens to the majority.

Define the "one-sided situation".

I'll rephrase it. Why is that there are more Chinese who are willing to ditch their mother tongue to go for English, than English speakers who are willing to ditch theirs to go for the Chinese language?

QUOTE(M1dN1ght @ Dec 16 2009, 06:35 PM)
So you're one of them.

Let me give you the simplest answer, because many idiots with no self-dignity are over-obsessed and influenced by the western media that they see everything western as superior, when it's not even true. Not surprising anyway, i'm talking (writing) to one now. It's really no different than some people wanting to be Korean because of the so-called "Korean Wave", not knowing that Korean celebs are mostly product of plastic surgery. To these people, One word: Phail.
*
It's simple. The reason why Chinese people ditch their own mother tongue and went for the English language because their own mother tongue lack the essence of the one thing called existentialism.

QUOTE(M1dN1ght @ Dec 16 2009, 07:00 PM)
Existentialism? In a language? Wtf? I believe Dickson made a post that's more than enough for you to understand.

You've no idea how many westernized Chinese are more than willing to learn their own language if they're given the chance or they wish they've the ability to speak it in the first place. My sister and i are one of them, and it's also the same reason why my parents sent to me to a Chinese tuition when i'm young. They wish that i've the ability to speak and understand my own language although they themselves do not have that ability. These are people who only pick the good thing about western, not someone who think everything about the west is superior.

The number of Mandarin speakers worldwide is more than twice the number of English speakers. You may argue that it's the population, but let's say all Chinese speak Chinese, then again Chinese is only 1/5 of the world's population, which means only less than 1/10 of the world's population speak English. From this we can conclude that most people still speak their own mother tongue and not resort to English.
*
Lol, if you don't understand existentialism, you won't understand what's lacking in the Chinese language.

It's not about English being superior. It's about how the Chinese are able to see the lack of existential essence in their language and culture.

QUOTE(ZeratoS @ Dec 16 2009, 08:06 PM)
I frequently hang out with Indians, Malays, Arabs, Westerners of various backgrounds. Simply because we have our medium of communication : English.

Now as for the Chinese educated people, who prefer to converse in solely the Chinese dialects, they cannot do this because they either don't feel comfortable speaking English or are segregating people via language. Why is this so?
*
The 5000 year of Chinese history is enough to make any Chinese feel TOO PROUD and XENOPHOBIC.

And know that the Chinese culture is made of the "evasive-condition, i.e. one of the worst risk-takers", and have very few philosophical excellence around the "beyond superficiality" department.

A different form of mental colonisation and defeat, e.g Chinese men wanting to suck white cocks better.

That's because it's more than a defeat.

There is a hocus-pocus-mumbo-jumbo-bull-shite-fairy-powered-up-my-car-nonsense behind all of it.

And I reckoned you are more inclined to see things as a "race", than a "soul", which of course is simply something intangible that is completely cryptic to you.

This is how I see it.

The Chinese who are disgusted by our Western mentality:

"You people who can't even be proud of your race and worships white asses."

The come back from the Westernized Chinese:

"You cold, callous, insecure, ethically inferior race who knows only things that are superficial rather than the revelation that was brought upon the soul."

May China be the next super power, but of all soulfulness, they have naught.

Man, I can't explain something that the naked eye can't see and it's beginning to sound more like a religion to you guys to be convinced that "an-OBVIOUS-superiority-exist-for-a-reason" is a afoot.

Of course, it's not like I have wings on my back to show credibility to all these things anyway.

Nope, it's not the "Western mentality" that sensible people are offended by, rather it's the self-hate and self-loathing that people like these have.

This same self-hatred and loathing is disguised by some mighty high falutin ideals and notions of superiority and inferiority that serve but one purpose: to cover up the hatred of the self and the deep sence of psychological inadequacy and identity crisis, and to piggyback on what this self-hatred deems superior in a vain bid to feel better and more superior also.

If it means sympathisation with the aggressor, then that's what these sellouts will do. If it means shitting on their own people in order to get into the good books of another, that's what they will do also.

This is what you do, Deadlocks. Who are you fooling? Who you are is plain to see, your fancy words do not hide your actions.
*
This "mighty high faultin ideals" is exactly the same argument that was used by atheists against the theists in religious debates, Dickson.

I see things that are ethereal, you see things that are apparent.

I really don't care about most of the things you say and for the most part I'm really quite happy to leave things as is. It's your life, and I shan't meddle by debating the finer points of your philosophy. We have fundamental differences and these will surely clash on many occasions.

The issue is thus not whether the differences exist and can lead to conflict, but how to maintain harmony and mutual respect even with the ever present potential of conflict.

But sadly for you this matter is non-negotiable for me. If you shit on my people, be prepared to get shit right back on harder. It's only just, don't you think? wink.gif
*
LOL!

Just for you to know, the "shitting" part is ALREADY HAPPENING even before we were born!

But yes. With all due respect, remember:

I too, am an Asian, there is no denying that.

We Western-minded Asians are really not that dumb to not realize the colour of our ethnicity.

We just think VERY differently.

Dickson can never have this kind of discussions with a Chinese educated, I believe.

In my observation.....

More Ce people trying or willing to learn English than Ee people trying or willing to learn Mandarin or other dialects.

I think.....sometimes, multilingual pays. Some Ce people said English = arrogance (language), and the other way round, some Ee individuals (from my circle) thinks that speaking Chinese = cheap.
*
You are speaking the truth, Kampung2005.

English-eds are really arrogant basterds.

It is the least arrogant or the ones who are close to humility that are to be truly feared.

QUOTE(Dickson Poon @ Dec 17 2009, 02:13 AM)
I'll bet that most of your experiences with racism came only from Chinese people, that you were made to feel like an outsider just because of your language, and this type of discrimination is so irrational that it will surely deeply mark a person.

But I'll bet that you've never seen Chinese people being killed, hurt, harmed just because they were Chinese, never seen Chinese people fail to be promoted because they were Chinese, never seen them mocked openly in public for who or what they are, never seen them put in subordinate positions, never seen Chinese women feted for the sake of golden cheebuy fetish sex under the cover of racial kumbayah even while the men are mocked and dehumanised, and the list goes on and on.

We have been made targets of racism even before you were born, but you don't see that. You cannot see beyond your own experiences, all your talk about recognizing "soul" is shallow and filled with lacunas and blind spots you don't even realise exists.

But I suppose that you are pretty much alike most others. We tend to repeat the things we have been taught most dearly.
*

Of course. Neither have I empathized their wrong-doings.

Lol, and if you want to continue talking about stuff that "don't exist", ooohhh, be prepared for a whole load of BS that are completely unquantifiable.

Universally, they are only known as "feelings".

I had to agree with dickson in one point that chinese ed and english ed is not a problem for people to get along, the problem is those narrow minded individuals who think they're greater than the other ed to mix with them.
*
Everybody needs to get along, being naturally human, and not being in a holier-than-thou position.

But when Dickson brings in his ideas of mental colonization.

I'll be there.

QUOTE(Kampung2005 @ Dec 17 2009, 02:25 AM)
Why less Ee individuals study or learn Chinese (dialects and also Mandarin) than Ce individuals study English?

I felt, firstly, for some of them, learning Chinese is harder, due to characters (thousands for average use).

Secondly, some perceive that they don't need to learn it because mass media, internet are mostly in English, even here in our country.
*
I'll be love to explain that but...I had my fair share of bringing philosophical ideas into this thread.

In short, it's all about that existentialism philosophy thingie.

You want to communicate? Then start with a language the other party understands. Start talking about things they already understand. From there, build a bridge for an exchange of ideas.

If I spoke Pidgin English with the barest effort to communicate more effectively, does it make sense for me to expect you to crack your head just to decipher what I mean?

Basic common sense, Deadlocks.

It would also help when its readily apparent, and requires no special knowledge or understanding to see the significance and relevance of what is being communicated.

If you want to be understood then you strive for clarity. But if you want to appear mysterious and wise, you can try for obscurity.

Which do you want?

Chinese educated people are not stupid. If there are people among them you want to communicate with, perhaps you should start finding out more effective ways of communicating.
*
Can you believe I actually debated with the Chinese-Ed IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE and make them speechless? Or rather made them snap and shaking in their seats.

Yes, I speak their language too, btw. And when things get too philosophical and scientific...

Let's just say they got no freaking choice but to change their medium of discussion to the English Language instead, LOL!

QUOTE(Dickson Poon @ Dec 17 2009, 02:27 AM)

Dickson implies that the reason why Chinese despises their own and became Westernized is because that they are mentally defeated by the West and completely insecure of the inferiority of their own race.

All I do is simply inject the reason of the Chinese being existentially-inferior, and of course, he scorned that idea of being pure, utter BS.

However what purpose did your debate with such people achieve? It might be more useful to talk to the ones who are willing to explore things.
*
Well, it started when they think I was snobbish when I'm talking in the English language.

And when I used their language.

The results never vary.

They still think I'm white washed LOL.

My personal favorite was starting with the question:

"Why most Asians are uncomfortable with touching."

And it went on to that "soul" thingie I've been talking to you about.

That's only a misconception. Just because I talk AS IF I worship the whites, does not REALLY MEAN that I'm actually worshiping them.

That's an indication that not all things are exactly the way they are.

It's the choice we make that matters.
