The main difference is that in Chinese magazine (in this case, mobile phone magazine), there is a section for people to post their own photos, i can see majority of the girls, show the "peace" sign.
*
Haha yeap. I usually attribute their "need" for a peace sign while taking pictures to people who smokes because they simply needed something to hold in their hands.

Or maybe, they just want to be cute or something.

As an aside, have you watched Zombieland yet? Really funny movie. I thought it was a bad idea for Bill Murray to even be wearing that sort of makeup. XD
*
Nope. Was gonna watch with a friend of mine who is also a fellow Lowyat-ian, but that fella went and watch it with his gf instead. Bugger.

QUOTE(Dickson Poon @ Dec 17 2009, 03:21 AM)
It's more of a comedy with a lot of black humor than a horror story, and there's very light existential themes in it but overall it was a movie I really enjoyed watching. Some parts kept me on the edge of my seat but that might be because I've gone soft with age. ROFL!

Hope you enjoy it too smile.gif
*
LOL. That's good to hear.

The existential themes...well, they're quite typical in American movies.

It's usually around the "Carpe Diem" department.

It's the humor I'm after, LOL.

So can you tell from appearance/gesture/clothing (before she speaks) whether one is english or chinese educated?
*
They usually adopt an accent.

And the topic is conversation is almost anything BUT food.

And plus, they don't ask:

"Have you eaten?" as a greeting, like most Asians do.

QUOTE(M1dN1ght @ Dec 17 2009, 11:15 PM)
There's no use repeating the same thing. In what way is the Chinese language and culture lack of existential essence? I've no idea, and you seems to understand the Chinese language/culture well so it would be pleasing if you bother to explain. Let us see how well do you actually know your own language/cultureĀ  biggrin.gif
*
How many existentialism philosophies have you found from the Chinese?

They do not excel in that area.

What's really simple is that, you don't realize the importance of understanding the meaning of existentialism.

QUOTE(M1dN1ght @ Dec 17 2009, 11:15 PM)
That's because both race and soul are an important part of a person and his/her life, which you will never understand. Nobody is made up of only either 1 of them. But unfortunately, not everybody can see this, only those who have a strong sense of belonging do.

"You cold, callous, insecure, ethically inferior race who knows only things that are superficial rather than the revelation that was brought upon the soul." - Sorry to say, but i see this as an insult to the westernized Chinese, as if all of them think like that. Please do not represent all the westernized Chinese as you're one of the very few Chinese who insult and turn their back on their own race, or what we call betrayers. Many Chinese especially those in the west still have some kind of feeling for their own root since they're the very minority in their country and are treated differently.
*
Rather than trying to understand the meaning of "You cold, callous, insecure, ethically inferior race who knows only things that are superficial rather than the revelation that was brought upon the soul", you preferred to call it an insult, and call us betrayers, without investigating the reason which I have gave you.

That's because you can't see things beyond the apparent.

Superficial.

The "soul" that I mentioned once to you, is not everything that matters.

It's the ONLY thing that matters.

If you don't transcend "race", you won't understand the soul.

QUOTE(Dickson Poon @ Dec 18 2009, 10:27 AM)
When the phrase "excelling in existentialism" is used I immediately think of Deadlocks. He certainly "excels" in it.
*
Not exactly. I just understood it how important it is.

QUOTE(cyloh @ Dec 18 2009, 10:29 AM)
Have you considered the dangers of existentialism? tongue.gif

Not a lot of people care to look into existentialism, or at least not dwell on it too much that they end up thinking forever and never truly lived.

It is too easy to label people as superficial just because people don't think as deep as you do. They can easily say that you are numb and weird.

Deadlocks, I do pray that you do not end up living like Nietzsche.
*
The dangers of existentialism? Or the dangers of obsession? There's a difference. tongue.gif

People think I am numb or weird because they have no choice. You can't really acknowledge or appreciate a person if you don't understand him, right?

So there are 2 choices:

Either convince them in accordance to their level of understanding.

Or ignore the obvious ignorance and stupidity and find people who can at least USE THEIR BRAINS.

And yes cyloh, there are people out there who uses their brains by the way, although it does not beat the hordes of dumb-asses out there (rhetorically speaking, btw).

And no, I don't live like that German-Swiss dude, but then again, it's impossible to judge a person's life correctly without sharing his 1st person experiences, and which case what you've read from Wikipedia is probably bull shite. tongue.gif

QUOTE(silverhawk @ Dec 18 2009, 11:06 AM)
No, it doesn't mean that. To put it simply, the chinese culture, like most oriental cultures nail you down if you try to stand out on your own. People should all be the "same", you should listen to what others tell you. The concept of personal responsibility is weak in oriental cultures, its more about social responsibility. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but social responsibility while neglecting personal responsibility leads to a two-faced culture.

One one side you see them as polite, civilised with strong values, but once you actually get to know it better you see all the hidden acts which contradict their public face. In the end, the person lives insincerely. This is not isolated to chinese culture alone of course, westerners practice being two-faced too, but the chinese culture encourages it to the extent its almost required.
*
QFT. At least the bolded text will soften the blows, otherwise the Chinese-Eds will think their existence are insignificant.

The dangers of obsessing existentialism
*
Not if you know your limits, and have a good back-up plan when danger lurks.

QUOTE(cyloh @ Dec 18 2009, 11:14 AM)
Ignorance and stupidity can be subjective or is too broad. They can apply the same words on you too you know. Everybody uses their brain by the way, it is just a matter of applied to what.
*
Oh really? You never met a person who commits rape all the time and justified it by saying it: "Aiyor, cannot tahan ma, how can not live without sex? Who ask the girls to reject me when I ask for sex? So no choice lor. Rape lar."

Is that not PLAIN stupid? And yes, that may be as intelligent as he can get, because it's so freaking subjective.

So go and rape people now, LOL.

But wait! What if that rapist is WILLING TO LEARN HOW WRONG HE ACTUALLY IS?

That's when he actually became smart.

That's why to those who ignore what an intellectual concept, it is highly probable that YOU CAN BE LABELED as stupid. Because it's almost unnatural to not do that, lol.

(Try to apply my explanation to you in a less extreme way, and you'll understand how I think people are stupid.)

QUOTE(cyloh @ Dec 18 2009, 11:14 AM)
There are people who live their lives without too much thought given too it. And of course there are people in between. Regulated and not extreme on one end.
*
Duh.

Too bad there are people who are simply just 1 millimeter above the regulated intelligence chart. And you call THAT an extremist, LOL.

QUOTE(cyloh @ Dec 18 2009, 11:14 AM)
It is still tough to judge a person's life after sharing his/her first person experiences, you have never felt their intangible emotions firsthand. So why are you labeling people again?
*
For the labeling part, you can scroll up a lil' bit more to read my reasons, and for the record, you did label my life being like Nietzsche too.

QUOTE(Dickson Poon @ Dec 18 2009, 11:14 AM)
"Is it true that Chinese culture is existential-less? Or is it merely that the Chinese have existentialism that Western thought cannot recognise?"
*
The Chinese have one notable existentialism philosophy, Dickson. It's called Buddhism.

The difference is that the Westerners are implying their existentialism more than the Chinese, because existentialism can also be simply described as "live the way you want, the way you are, and nobody else can tell you what to do, even if you may be a jack-a.ss in understanding the consequences behind it".

Yeap, I said it. The Chinese culture conditioned people to be more evasive of the consequences. How? By ripping the your personal freedom of sky diving, live to tell and felt FREAKING GOOD about it, dammit lol.

Or a more related situation. The freedom to speak, and act your mind. It's like making people eunuchs by cutting of your freedom of expression.

QUOTE(t3chn0m4nc3r @ Dec 18 2009, 11:15 AM)
ooo... honestly i never knew tat about chinese culture... never studied in a Chinese school... and my parents didn't exactly enforce tat in me... hmm.gif

but seriously though... i don feel tat sort of culture practiced among the general chinese ed people in malaysia... hmm.gif
*
That's because you never made enough friends with foreigners, or at least GET MORE ENGLISH-ED friends, and you'll understand the difference.

Nah, I'm joking. Just read up, and live the way you want.

Can't blame you personally. It's your freaking Chinese, oh waitaminute, OUR Chinese culture's being the b****.

QUOTE(Dickson Poon @ Dec 18 2009, 11:15 AM)

Unfortunately, your overuse of ellipses gave an impression that although you may claim that you are English-Ed, you certainly don't think like one.

Because I personally think too much ellipses means too much indecisiveness in stating a point.

Why can't you just use periods to end your sentences?

Consider the following differences:

"You are wrong."

"u r wrong......."

Which is of these statements have more conviction than the other?

Are you very sure that's what existentialism is about? Because I have an instinct that tells me what you quoted in parenthesis is actually one aspect, one small school of thought under the umbrella of what is termed existentialist philosophy.
*
Nope, it's just my simple and general way of describing existentialism.

This is what you may have read from the Internet search of what existentialism is:

"A philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe, regards human existence as unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one's acts."

What really turned me on the the part where they actually cared about your "personal universe", i.e. as stated from the description: "uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience".

Sounded similar?

Exactly what SilverHawk has told you.

QUOTE(Dickson Poon @ Dec 18 2009, 12:21 PM)

Yes, but you may want to pardon my sudden brain-fart of stupidity, that you may wanna elaborate further.

I know, I'm not a smart person actually.

QUOTE(t3chn0m4nc3r @ Dec 18 2009, 12:35 PM)
Well, I've been typing serious emails at work to maintain a good image for my company and pretty much tired of it.

When I'm here, it's usually for leisure purpose. And all I asked was what existentialism has to do with "Chinese-ed vs English-ed" girls because i failed to see the point back when i asked the question.

And now i finally understand so can you excuse my way of posting for it has nothing to do with what you are posting? notworthy.gif
*
It's simple.

Chinese-Ed Chinese called us traitors for not being Chinese enough when you are obviously, biologically, born as a Chinese.

I told them it's not just "skin-colour" that they've abandoned.

It's the "lack of perception of the subconscious and the soul" that they abhor the most.

Simple English: "Individuality".

My amplifier: "Existentialism".

QUOTE(cyloh @ Dec 18 2009, 12:44 PM)
You made up and extreme example and asked me to apply it to myself in a less extreme manner. How does that make me understand how you

If I made up an example of this perverted boy who gays people around and drinks banana milk shake while he's at it, then apply it to you in a
less perverted manner. Does that aid you in understanding?
I mentioned people who regulate themselves well without reaching the extremes. You are quick to presume I think 1 millimeter more or less
is extremist.
Superficial. You have wasted my goodwill in hoping you do not become like him.

QUOTE(TUCKY @ Jan 29 2010, 04:54 AM)
who dont want to live in a big house, drive a big car, wear nice clothes, travel around the world? But sometimes we have to be realistic and spend within our means. How much I long for it but sometimes, it's fate. Rich people have two hands and two legs just like any others. Why are they so successful while others toil away day and night just to make it through? Life is indeed unfair.
*
Maybe. But you haven't really heard of rich men complaining life is unfair due to their inferiority of intangibility that came from the side effects of having too much purchasing power, haven't you?

You THINK rich is GOOD because you LONG for it.

The feeling of longing is what makes you THINK like that, and rich people, like poor ones as well, also has the nature to LONG for things. In this case, for things their purchasing power has no influence at all.

A simple change-of-life-perspective easily puts things back to normal. Know that it's also the same hunger that came from Africa that stroked the rich man.

The reason why you can't see it yet? The pain is still there, that's why.
