Tyranid is currently one of the strongest race/army in TT. The up coming 5th edition may change that but we wont know for sure.
Tyranid army is extremely customizable, compound that with generally low points in costing, large in number and lightning fast attacks in close combat they are terribly effective even in the hands of new players. Being hive minded unless all the large tyranid are dead or not around all tyranids are consider fearless.
The one that take the cheese for tyranid for the moment are their monstrous creatures. Think alien queen like creatures which can fly around and shoot bio plasma that can easily destroyer tanks and is damn bloody hard to kill and you will get the picture, and you can spam them.
Tyranids are tough as nails on paper in TT game, but based on my experience.. Good troops on TT is just a minor assent compared to the experience of the gamer. As hive tyrants and carnifax are very much feared, they can't be spamed in a normal 40K game.. Unlike Apocalypse, which you can field anything short of the primarchs and chaos gods...
Point is, although the basic troops of tyranis are really mean, templates and blast weapon can smack them silly.. As for shooting tyrants and carnifaxes... they have BS of 2.... so you can try shooting 10 shoots and only have a chance of 3 hits... which is sad... Having them meele sounds wise, IF you are trying to tear Magnus Calgar or Abbadon, maybe even a living saint... Try having 1 carnifax against 50 cheap conscripts plus a commisar at the back.. yeah, 50 men can't kill it... but it'll be stuck there for the rest of the game...
TT is more versatile, as the terrain, troops, and all are 3D... Yes, we do not have animation of carnifax killing the enemy.. but text and simple models are much easier to balance compared to a fully animated pc game with wonderful graphics..
