QUOTE(dragna @ Feb 23 2008, 06:16 PM) I'd always keep/backup and delete my files onto my external drive before formating it or even sending it over to the shop (rarely). thats not good enough and too naive actually. even if you delete or reformat the hdd, it can still be recovered back. when i sent my ibook for repairs, the apple centre (in malaysia but i wont name it) actually asked me if i am interested to recover the data from my corrupted hdd. they will send it to s'pore and they charge by the number of mb recovered for you. But seriously lets just say if you are sending your PC into service and it's not the HDD that is at fault and you've already gotten the files out of the harddrive, do you think the staffs would go thru the trouble just to see if theres any secretive files hidden on your harddrive? I think people will react only if the thing in infront of them and in edison's case i think he never hidden them files well enough.

No one is in their right mind to send a PC for repair with personal images inside especially if they are celebs.
Copy everything out to external disk, make sure everything is copied. Delete the original copy in your Mac, and choose "Secure Delete".
Or if you are paranoid, go to Disk Utility, security, erase Free space and choose "35-pass Erase".

you guys ... not every Mac user is that aware of the abilities of their Macs. I'm sticking by my answer.
I'll even say that I've had some VIP customers send Macs and other stuff... really didn't bother looking through, mainly cos I care about them... and would like them to come back. Beyond that, its seriously not cool to post up customer's private lives.
If I ever found slightly unusual stuff, I would probably inform the customer to secure his stuff, rather than leave it lying around for anyone to see...

I agree with xaw5126, why border with other people's personal things.
I think Edison case is complicated. however, it teaches us many valuable lessons. The wicked will have to face the consequences he/she has done.
Think twice before committing something that will hurt others.

In the first place, why is this thread targetting Apple Centre's? It may happen to him also even he has a Dell or any Windows operating system as well.
Don't ruin a business reputatiion when the fault lies with human.

Well I just sent my iPod touch to Service Centre due to touch screen hardware problems and I got my songs/videos/some photos in it, I hope and I think the guys over there won't steal my data's for own use or crime purpose and I think they won't do it and have some respect to customers. About Edison, how come he did not backup or delete the stuff first before servicing it. So dumb.

From what i read, his "PINK" ibook is KO, can't boot. And assuming that he has no knowledge to get the hdd out or what. Logically, if you got such "data", i bet you sure will get the hdd out no matter what or find a way to delete those "data". Don't know how? Google it la, dumb
