hey guys ... noob guitar player here ...
i own a BCRich Virgin axe & was just wondering if i should change the pickups of my guitar ?
i primarily play punk & alternative-emo stuff as rhythm guitar ...
i know i know the virgin is more of a metal guitar but i'm not that into that kinda music ...
got this guitar cause my bro once went for lessons at the BCRich distributor Ironwood & got persuaded to get this axe ...
that was way before any of us knew anything about guitars & thought all guitars were the same =P

anyway back to the topic ... i prefer tones like billie joe of green day & deryck whibley of sum41, johnny ramone, & the 2 dudes from mcr ...
more bright & clear sounding yet distorted stuff ... haha dont really know how to explain !
anyone can give me any tips on how to get that kinda sound with my guitar ? pickups & pedals wise ...
i don't play much lead so i basically want a fat warm crunchy rhythm tone that won't get drowned out ...
much appreciated ... thanks ! =)

Since you're a beginner, it's best if you send it to a professional luthier to get it soldered and installed. It's not just taking them out from the guitar and slapping a new one in.... there's alot of soldering, adjusting and wiring involved in installing a new pickup.

Since you want more of a punk sound, the Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz combo would be an excellent choice. The JB Humbucker is used in Billie Joe's original Blue guitar BTW. It's more towards the treble range like you want and tje Jazz rounds out the JB in the neck position where it gives you a little more depth on your lows.

And, because of the way your guitar is built, if you ever decide to play Metal (WHICH YOU SHOULD!), these are also GREAT and does the job extremely well. I play a RR3 with the same JB/Jazz combo and it suits alot of genres....

Also, like wreckens15 said, it also depends alot on your amp. Perhaps you should also considered a better amp or one that is more suited to the punk rock sound you like.

thanks for the fast reply guys !
mmm i've done some research into the seymour duncan JB but i've never hear of the JB/Jazz combo ... what's the difference ah ?
as for my amp, i'm using a roland microcube primarily for practice la ...
i don't go gigging all that much & when i do, it's usually with rented amps & stacks so i don't think i'll be getting a new amp anytime soon la ...
but i'll look into the SD JB pickups ... how much are they retailing for & which stores carry them ?

and p/s it's not that i don't like metal, i'm actually quite into the more mainsream stuff like metallica, trivium & a7x ... i just don't play them all that much =P

oh yeah ... how bout pedals-wise ? what's the difference between overdrive & distortion pedals anyway ah ?
which would be better for me ?

what he meant by JB/Jazz combo is JB in the bridge position and Jazz in the neck position. same goes for EMG81/85 combo(81 in the bridge, 85 in the neck)

on a side note, the new alexi signature models finally have Blackouts in them! thumbup.gif

What are the differences between Gain, Overdrive and Distortion?

Using Gain, Overdrive, and Distortion can either add or detract from your overall guitar tone, so it's a good idea to know the differences between them. Technically speaking, There are several definitions to these terms, but we are only going to deal with the audio Aspects, or how it sounds to your ears.

Gain is usually defined as an overall boost in your signal without any added tonal coloration. It is usually expressed in decibels such as "Gimme a 3dB boost on that kick drum." Adding more gain is basically just amplifying the signal so it cut through the mix or can be heard over a loud drummer.

Overdrive, as it has come to be known as, is a smooth, warm, slightly distorted sound, generally associated with the sound made by cranking up a tube amp. It is fat and dynamic, allowing you to vary your tone just by the way you play. Overdrive pedals can come close to giving you that tube overdrive sound, probably the most popular being the Tube Screamer.

Distortion can be defined as anything from a fuzz tone to a full-on, notched-out midrange, death metal wall of noise. It is a hard-edged sound with as many variations as there are players. Digital distortion has a more metallic, raspy sound which works well for heavy metal, grunge, or reliving your 80's hair band days. Analog tube distortion gives a good, all-around rock tone, such as the sound of a Marshall stack cranked to 10.

The key to all this is to listen and experiment and let your ears be the final judge. Knowing the differences and how to use them will go a long way to helping you define your own signature tone.

Doesn't mean he will switch NOW....... besides, EMGs are waaaaaaaaay too powerful.
And again, the Jazz/JB combo are still good for metal....... if it's good enough for Randy Rhodes........

Seymour Duncans are very versatile and 'general' pickups .. So you won't go wrong with Seymour Duncans .. Provided you choose the one that's the closest to the sound you "agak agak" want ..

My sifo taught me this. biggrin.gif

ohh okay ... 2 different pickups ... understood !
mmm yeah i've heard EMGs are abit too strong ...
will look more into the seymour duncans thanks =)

then what good decently-priced overdrive/distortion pedals do u sifus recommend pulak ?
is it better to get several pedals separately, or get one of those all-in-one guitar effect thingies ?
i saw 1 from behringer around 1.4k ... but since i rarely use wahs and such it seems abit not worth right ?
sorry for being so long-winded ... just would really like to know more =P

Added on February 10, 2008, 5:24 pmhaha said di earlier ... i love my BCRich & all but my bro was kinda "persuaded" (=conned) into buying it by his ex-guitar teacher ma ... so it's not exactly the sound i want ...
i like the fact that it sounds heavy ... but would like there to be more clarity and crunch if possible !

for the pickups, keep in mind that EMG81/85 is an active combo. meaning you have to power it with a 9v battery and unplug your guitar to prevent it from draining your battery smile.gif

the battery life for EMGs is never a concern.
if you remember to always plug out the cable...the battery can last at least 9 months to a yr+ depending how often you play.

most basic distortion is BOSS DS-1
if you're not happy with it, u can modify it to get more lows and highs.

overdrive.. most ppl wil recommend the digitech bad monkey

if you want the multieffects, zoom g2.1u is good too, provided u spend some time reading the manual and tweak the patches according to suit the sound you want

if you have that guitar and DON'T want to play metal, sell it to me, and buy another one, seriously. (GASGASGAS)
B.C. Rich is one of the brands that come designed to blast in-your-face, screaming metal.

You want a more punky sound, go for something else, honestly.

EMGs are wayyyyy overpowered for punk stuff, so i'd also go for the Jb/jazz setup
