Electronics. Ever wondered why the free-for-all Lowyat (or Sim Lim while I'm at it) can't survive in Australia? Everything is dominated by d*** Smith (and can someone stop IPB from thinking it is an expletive?) or Harvey Norman. You can't compete with them, and even if you do try, only the real hard core will drive all the way out to some Asian run computer part shop because they offer better prices and range in a warehouse.

People have been brought up on Dell, HP, Toshiba and Acer. Its not easy being a geek here. I admit, I do miss Low Yat.

ok guys, need info on unis, which are the good ones for engineering, im gonna be applying this friday for june 08 intake, right now its melb u, unsw, and anu, though i have been told that uwa is good as well. and only reason im choosing this four is because im rather ignorant about the other choices as i havent heard/read much bout them.

so ya, shud i consider any other universities for engineering?

HP Compaq business notebooks are really great, with excellent build quality and top-notch performance. You should consider those if you want a durable notebook for university. I personally use an nc6400, but the 8510p/w 15.4" models have excellent graphics cards (X2600/Quadro FX 570).

For engineering, UNSW is highly recommended. UNSW has the largest Engineering School in Australia and offer broadest range of engineering streams. In fact, it is the best choice.

University of Melbourne is not recommended due to limited streams available after implementing the Melbourne Model. There are now only six streams available. Besides, Melbourne emphasis more on theory rather than practical. In first two years of engineering subjects, most of them are learning theory part only and the assessment mode relies heavily on final exam (written exam), at least 70%. ANU also only offers limited number of streams, common streams such as chemical, civil are not offered in ANU. UWA is not too bad, can be considered if u r choosing Perth. Monash and Adelaide are also some better options.

DO NOT go to RMIT for Engineering tho, it sucks.

Only those who are ignorant would have such a view. UNSW is a highly-respected engineering school and I doubt anyone in this profession would make such a statement.

My definition of hardcore engineering is 100% engineering subjects with no other papers like management, manufacturing, computing etc.
I did not say Melbourne U is better than UNSW.

That's exactly my point. I'm saying be it UNSW or Melbourne U, they're going to feed you with lots of irrelevant course(not) and you're going to be thankful for them as the so called irrelevant courses are going to help you in the future.
If you're saying hardcore engineering, I don't see computing involved at all. Engineering is engineering, computing is computing. Even though they are closely related and many got the wrong idea that computing comes along with engineering. Actually no, computers are just items used to expand the capability and empower engineering uses.

But I can't deny that you'll touch computer no matter what kind of engineering field you're in
