I still prefer this thread.Dunno why.

Maybe you should put the link on the first page for the Aus mamak thread.

Yeah, lots of different types here. tongue.gif

Still,the food here suxs.

Really miss Malaysian food. The food here are mostly tasteless compare to Malaysian food.Asian food is the worst.Western food is ok but they are expensive.

I also hate going to shopping malls. It's too small to lepak around there. The only reason i go there is for EB Games.Just go there to watch some trailers or fancy ori box.

Let me make this clear: this thread is not for general banter or chit chat. It is for the members to share information on studying and living in Australia AS A STUDENT. Open discussion and alternate view points are accepted, as long as you have FACTS to back yourself up. KVReninem has opened a thread in the black hole called Kopitiam if you want to spew your mindless spleen. Keep this thread clean and on topic, touching on issues that afffect Malaysian International students in Australia.
*
Honestly,i still prefer this thread.I really dont like to go to Kopitiam cause it's filled with rubbish threads and posts like a random hi or something.

Kopitiam is really a black hole to me.A subforum that is filled with mindless crap.

Electronics. Ever wondered why the free-for-all Lowyat (or Sim Lim while I'm at it) can't survive in Australia? Everything is dominated by d*** Smith (and can someone stop IPB from thinking it is an expletive?) or Harvey Norman. You can't compete with them, and even if you do try, only the real hard core will drive all the way out to some Asian run computer part shop because they offer better prices and range in a warehouse.

People have been brought up on Dell, HP, Toshiba and Acer. Its not easy being a geek here. I admit, I do miss Low Yat.
*
They really dont have a Low Yat here?

Damn,i was thinking of getting a desktop here.I really hate to do CAD without a numpad but getting a desktop from Dell or Acer is no no for me.

I still prefer for a custom build desktop with the parts that i want to use, especially the graphics card.Dell,Acer and others often give crappy graphics card.

dude..build it your own..or just get dell xps lappie  thumbup.gif
im also building my rig this winter.
*
Im already using a XPS lappie but it's not powerful enough.Plus, the build quality of the laptop is quite low.

I want a midrange quadcore with a 9600 or 9800 GC.

QUOTE(notanon @ May 7 2008, 05:33 PM)
ok guys, need info on unis, which are the good ones for engineering, im gonna be applying this friday for june 08 intake, right now its melb u, unsw, and anu, though i have been told that uwa is good as well. and only reason im choosing this four is because im rather ignorant about the other choices as i havent heard/read much bout them.

so ya, shud i consider any other universities for engineering?
*
You could consider UNSW.One of the best engineering schools in Aus.

QUOTE(PeNNyPupZ @ May 7 2008, 05:50 PM)
bah i want a desktop too.. so i can play games better har har har.. vista's laggin the shit outta me!

Me too.

Im also thinking of getting a set of sound system that cost 1000AUD from here to go with the rig.

errr really..ok...almost tot of xps..
but then going quad now ..scavenging for parts from kl to melb.

*
Yeah,i might buy some parts from KL and bring it here.Possibly only the GC and processor.

I need a rig to run Starcraft 2,Red Alert 3 and Dawn of War 2 at high graphics smoothly, even though i know i dont have much time to play now.

HP Compaq business notebooks are really great, with excellent build quality and top-notch performance. You should consider those if you want a durable notebook for university. I personally use an nc6400, but the 8510p/w 15.4" models have excellent graphics cards (X2600/Quadro FX 570).
*
I cant change now.Might as well stick to the one i have now.

It's not that bad. It's just im not satisfied with the component quality.

If it doesnt break down anymore,im still quite happy with it.

Now,i just need a quad core with a nVidia 9-Series GC to fully utilise DX10.8600GT isnt powerful to handle DX10.

For engineering, UNSW is highly recommended. UNSW has the largest Engineering School in Australia and offer broadest range of engineering streams. In fact, it is the best choice.

University of Melbourne is not recommended due to limited streams available after implementing the Melbourne Model. There are now only six streams available. Besides, Melbourne emphasis more on theory rather than practical. In first two years of engineering subjects, most of them are learning theory part only and the assessment mode relies heavily on final exam (written exam), at least 70%. ANU also only offers limited number of streams, common streams such as chemical, civil are not offered in ANU. UWA is not too bad, can be considered if u r choosing Perth. Monash and Adelaide are also some better options.
*
I kinda agree with you but i still dont get why people still like to go Melbourne when their engineering isnt as good as UNSW.UNSW's courses are more practical based.I have to go on the field to do surveying every 2 weeks. It was fun, though.

Whenever i tell im studying in UNSW,they always ask me as if Melbourne Uni is much much better in engineering than UNSW.UNSW is like some crap uni to them.

I somehow feel like i made a bad choice even though UNSW is a pretty awesome place to study.

QUOTE(babiix @ May 8 2008, 03:52 PM)
DO NOT go to RMIT for Engineering tho, it sucks.

I thought RMIT's engineering is better than Melbourne U?

Only those who are ignorant would have such a view. UNSW is a highly-respected engineering school and I doubt anyone in this profession would make such a statement.
*
I dont know.Almost everyone give me this opinion.Besides, all my friends go to Melbourne to study.Im the only one studying here.

The reason i choose UNSW because of their more practical approach in teaching, cheaper than Melbourne, they dont force me to learn economics or any non-engineering related subjects(unlike Melbourne which i hate a lot) and UNSW is better in engineering than Melbourne.

I prefer "hardcore" engineering.

If you are saying Melbourne U is better than UNSW.Then, why are you coming to UNSW?

It's almost all hardcore engineering here, unless you take some econ subjects for Gen Ed.

Define hardcore.
My definition of hardcore engineering is 100% engineering subjects with no other papers like management, manufacturing, computing etc.
I did not say Melbourne U is better than UNSW.
*
Computing are one of the core course in UNSW.You have to take it no matter what.

That's exactly my point. I'm saying be it UNSW or Melbourne U, they're going to feed you with lots of irrelevant course(not) and you're going to be thankful for them as the so called irrelevant courses are going to help you in the future.
If you're saying hardcore engineering, I don't see computing involved at all. Engineering is engineering, computing is computing. Even though they are closely related and many got the wrong idea that computing comes along with engineering. Actually no, computers are just items used to expand the capability and empower engineering uses.

But I can't deny that you'll touch computer no matter what kind of engineering field you're in smile.gif
*
I still consider computing as part of engineering.Computers plays a major role in engineering and if you can do even some basic VB,that will help you a lot.

I dont mind learning extra subjects like surveying(that one is a fun subject) or computing but not things like economics or bio when im doing civil engineering.
