hi ppl!
i've been sometime since the last time i checked this thread! woowee ... it's still alive and kicking and i like it smile.gif

i've temporarily stopped the lesson due to hectic work schedules... i guess that's the pain of working full time ... erm with a dog tongue.gif
still trying to bring myself to inform the music center that i'm quitting... just told them i'm halting the lessons for few months... how?
will try to go there and inform personally soon .. and take the deposit back.

so now i'm practicing at least a few times a week until i broke the g string yesterday?! aaaAAaa i never changed string before ...
1. should i attempt to change it myself or? i read and watched some instructions online but still...
2. should i just change the string that broke or change all the string (one after the other of course...)

cos i don wanna change the string and broke it again rclxub.gif as the new set i bought was not cheap...

and, yes, how much does a tuner with and without metronome costs? and which type/brand will u ppl recommend... i seriously must learn how to tune the violin... previously the teacher always tune for me and he doesnt say much on how to tune e.g. like the correct way to twist the peg, when to use the fine tuner etc...

hear from u ppl soon smile.gif

yours?

spending such amount dosn't scare me off, but this is my reasoning; what can i achieve in such a short duration( 4 classes in 1 month )
i was still playing open strings in 1 month... or is it me - slow?? hmmm ...

QUOTE(jikolo @ May 19 2008, 10:07 PM)
cello, is eurostring making erm... acceptable grade of beginner violin?
*
i'm using eurostring. so far ok ... well at least for me... my ears are not that greatly tuned to violin yet... tongue.gif
but imo, beginner's violin no need to be too expensive as you can upgrade later...

if you used to electronic tuner/PC, you'll won't be able to tune during performance.

first, pianist and violinist enter the hall, then 3rd people who's stage crew carrying a laptop, then the violinist tune and looking at the laptop, then the crew go back with the laptop...

or, every violinist bring out a small device which is electronic tuner, so everyone start to tune, but the tuner is capturing everyone's sound so the tuner indicator jumping up and down, then everyone start to scream "stfu i'm tuning"...

... rclxub.gif
*
hilarious.... but for my case i only want the electronic or chromatic tuner for my own use... not during performance ... still beginner....
but i guess during performance the concertmaster will actually lead the tuning, no?

tot the types of violin strings used is one of the major reason for how bright your violin sounds, no? hmm.gif
different string brand also counts... even same brand, same type of string, they have different types quality which produces diff type of sounds

blush.gif sorry just writing what i gathered from the articles i read... no personal experiences as only change 2 strings in my violin.

but definitely heard some differences in the dominant g string compared to my original g on my cina violin....
not sure the dominant g string is defective or what but a little slow in response....
as for the second string that snapped, the e string, the dominant e really sound better than the original e string which was a little harsh ... blush.gif haha.. again my own opinion la..

some of the info i quoted from some sites :

types of strings matters ...
"Gut-core strings have their own unique sound, which is very full and complex with lots of overtones. "

"Many (but not all) steel-core strings have a tendency toward brightness. The sound is usually clear but simple, with few overtones."

synthetic core - "a string that sounded like a gut-core string but didn’t have the disadvantages of pitch instability and slow response. These strings use a core of perlon (a type of nylon) wrapped with silver or aluminum. "

e.g. synthetic core strings and sounds produced by different brands
"Thomastik-Infeld Dominants ($54–$58), the original synthetic-core strings, are still top sellers. The sound is brilliant and responsive, and these strings seem to work well with many different instruments."
"Pirastro’s first response to Thomastik-Infeld Dominant strings (see below) was the Aricore ($37). This string has a dark, warm sound, but can be dull and rather dead on some instruments. "
" The Infeld Red set has a darker, warmer sound, and the Infeld Blue is more brilliant. "

regardless of the sound, use a shoulder rest if you have a long neck. as long as it doesn't squeeze the violin. it won't have much impact to the sound. i wouldn't trade sound for uncomfortable playing, it makes no point at all if you have a better voice but you can't sing well.
*
yea. agreed. tried once without shoulder rest, violin kept slipping away...

uh...

basically, use tissue paper, fold until it become thick layers, put a drop or two of alcohol (denature alcohol), and wipe the melted rosin on the strings, that's all. open some windows, cause alcohol can release poison gas... laugh.gif
*
hmm... interesting.... all about how to clean your violin... i am wondering why no one mentioned about cleaning the bow?
do u guys clean your bows after playing? i do ...

i really should start going back to my classes after more than 6 months of hiatus. i've got the most patient teacher, not sure he still remember i exist ? ha.. ha.. ha..

QUOTE(little ice @ Nov 25 2009, 10:23 AM)
pyramid is decent, but those RM12.50 one set are usable too. at RM50 or lower, avoid those strings that are too thick especially G string, which tends to slow down the respond, in other words, you feel like you want to dig into the strings to get a decent sound.

i played a RM1000 china made violin with that RM12.50 strings on it, still sound warm and thick. sometimes it depends on the violin...
*
i totally agree with u.... mine is a less than rm900 china violin, but the sound is clear n loud (well i didnt have any idea as i had 0 knowledge that time) according to several experience ppl. then the g n e string snapped. changed them with the spare - dominant strings. however, the new g doesnt sound as good. and even to my inexperience ears, kinda off... maybe it is me... well i'll have to live with it until i attend the next class.... maybe get a new g-string that "fits" (pun intended)...

hmm... i shall go back to class one of these days....

so i assume we can buy a single string by itself and not the whole set, r8? so for G string, any recommedations?

If your g string sounds wrong, then it might be out of tune. Take your violin to the shop and ask them to tune it for you? Yeah, you can buy single strings, I'm using Pyramid currently for E, but it doesn't sound as good as the other strings, not sure what brand they are, as they came with the violin. Gonna get me a new set of better quality strings next time there's a sale.
*
erm. sorry forget to mention, the G is not out of tune. when played on it, it have a weird feel n scratchy sound to it.... dunno how to explain.... n sometimes have to press to bow in certain way n pressure to get the a clear sound

ha ha very funny...

anyway thanks for the advise.... i'll just stick to the strings until they snap...

RM500 will fit a eurostrings model 200, and RM1000 will fit model 300. they're pretty good for the price, but that's what i have experiences with, maybe there're better ones but i don't know.
*
yea. mine is eurostring300, costs rm850 ... got it around 1.5 years ago... so far it's ok for me.... but i havent played on other violins tongue.gif

QUOTE(TandooriC @ Aug 23 2010, 02:58 PM)
Hey guys,

It has been a year and a half since I first started learning violin and I feel that I'm making very slow progress. I started without any musical background and jumped straight into violin.

My first teacher was good as she had played in an orchestra before. She was very strict but whenever she shows an example she plays really well. I noticed that she adds a little vibrato at the end of long notes.  tongue.gif She has her own violin.

My new teacher is young and makes mistakes. I know nobody is perfect, just sometimes she is not very convincing with her violin practical and theory. She prefers to show an example by using the piano instead. She is also quite strict but we can go over the same piece for 3 weeks.

I now still only know the first postion and only played pieces on G, D, A majors. Am I going too slow? Is it because there was a change in teacher which slowed things down?  What is your opinion on a good teacher? Strict, linient?

Btw, I would like to know how you would answer to this question. smile.gif
"Why is there no E# and B#?"
*
E# is also F
B# is also C

so i guess instead of using e# i guess it is much simpler to use f and similarly for b# and c
