QUOTE(little ice @ Mar 20 2010, 05:46 AM) my friend praise boris a lot, he should do a very good job. coming from europe, prepare to pay a lot of money (say, RM200~RM300 for a bridge, or maybe more but unlikely less, i'm not sure). i'd like to add that, dominique @ carismen dolce is a successful business man. since he "bring" boris in, apart from real luthier services, there's also business... thanks... do i have to worry about the "business" side? if i only stick to the luthier service? or you mean like a normal business they will try hard to sell me extra stuffs that i dont need (i can avoid this )...or like most business the services will be "mark-up" to astronomical price? (sign...that one i cannot afford ) This post has been edited by ollec: Mar 20 2010, 04:51 PM

QUOTE(little ice @ Mar 21 2010, 12:35 AM) to be fair i haven't send my violin for boris to service yet, and i didn't hear from my colleagues about the fees, so i couldn't speak for the fees. but most likely it won't be any cheap due to germany/italy based + "import duty"... normally, say, fitting a new bridge, the fee is normally below RM200 included a new high quality bridge (RM200 already pretty steep for local luthiers). so most like it'll be more than that. if you're dealing with cello, it'll be even more. those who willing to pay the money for imported luthiers, their instruments are usually in the 5 digits range... thanks for the advice ... it does give perspective... i'll pass for this round, better spend my money for lesson.

QUOTE(TandooriC @ Aug 23 2010, 06:09 PM) Haha, yes I know that. Just like my new teacher. She just says E# is F and B# is C. Then she shows me the piano and that black keys for the semitone is not there. But she could never give a reason why. It's funny when I ask my grade 8 friends as well. It is as if the question never even occured to them. They just say that's the way it is. But why is that so? Just curious as to why E and B, why not some other random note? Why the sudden gap in the semitones there? I suppose there should be a very complex explanation involving diatonic, chromatic, whole tone, pentatonic, hexatonic, heptatonic, and whatnot which is probably best left unknown to a beginner. So ok, I guess I can just accept it without reason. if you are really really interested, you can take a look at this book How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony and you Should care and actually, for a string player this is good knowledge, because piano player has no choice but to be limited by the white and black key, as a string player, you can play E# and F differently, because you control where you finger press on that string have fun!

QUOTE(liez @ Jan 3 2011, 10:51 PM) hey dey....juz wanna share with you guys the new bow I just got.... its a brand called dorfler made from pernambuco wood. I'd spent my last 6 months working like hell and save like hell just to get this bow. Weight: heavy - As I loved heavy bows since I prefer songs from the romantic period. I need heavy bow to give much more expression than usual. smoothness: not smooth - this is the only thing I don't like about the bow. It required me to control it really well (extra strength wasted) in order for its flow to work nicely. volume: sure dam loud.... imagine a heavy bow without smoothness... Really love the volume produced. spiccato: yea....can do spiccato albeit its heavy but had to control the bow really well as compared to light bows where you can do it easily. price: about RM3k (RM2900++) This is my first pernambuco bow... Well, quite like it but tbh its far from the high end bow that I dreamed of. Its good in playing romantic period song... but one has to control it really well to play the likes of classical and 20th centuries. Nice, congratulation Could i know how do you choose the bow? like do you tried it out before buying? or try a few or many bows of the same model? and do you buy personally or from internet? thanks and enjoy your new toy
