Toshiba not throwing the tower after all wink.gif some might think its a fire sale offer but think again wink.gif . Consider this as Toshiba's retaliation on BD's $500mil Warner hijack wink.gif . Toshiba has officially reduced the MRSP prices of its HD DVD players as follows wink.gif

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/shop/12836/P...VD_Players.html

bhphotos.com ships to malaysia wink.gif

ah ha, bhphotos.com further drops the prices for their HD DVD player biggrin.gif

HD A3 = $119 (RM445+RM358 courier = RM803) at RM3.3 currency exchange rate tongue.gif
HD A30 = $149
HD A35 = $225

QUOTE
Effective on January 13, 2008 the MSRP of the entry-model:

1.  HD-A3 will be $149.99,
2.  HD-A30, with 1080p output, $199.99,
3.  HD-A35 (high-end 1080p with Anchor Bay video processor), $299.99

Now all i have to do is to wait for the new prices to reflect on bhphotos.com wink.gif

Toshiba Deploys New HD DVD Marketing Initiatives Based on Strong Fourth Quarter Unit Sales

Mass Market Acceptance Confirms that HD DVD is the Consumer's Choice for
Next Generation High Def Entertainment

WAYNE, N.J., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Consumer Products,
L.L.C. ("Toshiba") today announced that it is stepping up its successful
marketing campaign for HD DVD as it experienced record-breaking unit sales
in the fourth quarter of 2007. Major initiatives, including joint
advertising campaigns with studios and extended pricing strategies will
begin in mid- January and are designed to spotlight the superior benefits
of HD DVD as well as the benefits HD DVD brings to a consumer's current DVD
library by upconverting standard DVDs via the HDMI™ output to near high
definition picture quality.

As Toshiba achieved the #1 sales volume in the next generation DVD
category with an approximately 50 percent market share in 2007, HD DVD is
proven to be the format of choice for consumers. Coupled with an 80 percent
plus market share of all next generation DVD equipped notebooks for the 4th
quarter 2007, the HD DVD format has already paved the way to a high
definition digital AV solution by eliminating the boundaries between the
consumer's living room and on the go.

HD DVD not only creates the ultimate high definition entertainment
experience, leveraging all of the promise of the format such as superior
audio/video performance, Web-enabled network capabilities and advanced
interactive features - it also has a high-level of compatibility with DVD.
With DVD upconversion via the HDMI output, HD DVD players instantly make a
movie lover's existing DVD library look better than ever.

"HD DVD is the best way to watch movies in high definition," said Jodi
Sally, Vice President of Marketing, Toshiba's Digital A/V Group. "Our HD
DVD players not only play back approximately 800 HD DVD titles available
worldwide and deliver an entirely new level of entertainment but also
enhance the picture quality to near high definition on legacy DVD titles by
all studios. In short, we added high def to DVD which already is the de
facto standard format created and approved by the DVD Forum that consists
of more than two hundred companies."

New Marketing Strategy for Mass Market Adoption

Taking the holiday season sales based on promotional prices into full
consideration, these new manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRP) are
designed to meet the potential demand for HD DVD players in the U.S.
market. Effective on January 13, 2008 the MSRP of the entry-model HD-A3
will be $149.99, the HD-A30, with 1080p output, $199.99, and the high-end
HD-A35, $299.99.

"While price is one of the consideration elements for the early
adopter, it is a deal-breaker for the mainstream consumer," said Yoshi
Uchiyama, Group Vice President Digital A/V Group. "Consumer sales this
holiday season have proven that the consumer awareness of the HD DVD format
has been elevated and pricing is the most critical determinant in
consumers' purchase decision of the next generation HD DVD technology. The
value HD DVD provides to the consumer simply cannot be ignored."

Extended Advertising Campaign

Toshiba plans to execute an extended advertising campaign that will
further enhance consumer awareness of the benefits of HD DVD and drive
sales to retail among potential consumers. Advertising strategies will
include television, print and online media channels. Toshiba will also work
with its dealers and studio partners on joint marketing and promotional
initiatives to promote HD DVD. Current promotions include "The Perfect HD
Offer" - a mail-in offer allowing consumers to select five HD DVD titles
for free from a selection of 15 with the purchase of any Toshiba HD DVD
player.

Consistent Viewing Experience and More

With advanced interactivity and Web-enabled network capabilities built
into every HD DVD player through a dedicated Ethernet port as mandated by
the specifications approved by the DVD Forum, Toshiba delivers on the
promise of a consistent entertainment experience through firmware updates
as studios launch new applications. HD DVD allows studios to flex their
creative muscle in ways never before seen. The latest of these new
experiences is online streaming. Now, when consumers connect their HD DVD
player to the Internet, they can stream new content or trailers, as
available, directly from a movie studio's server.

Universal Home Video, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG
have reported that an average of 30 percent of HD DVD owners have accessed
Web- enabled network features and continue to do so regularly.

Ongoing Customer Commitment

In order to ensure that its customers will receive complete
satisfaction from their new players, Toshiba introduced the "HD DVD
Concierge" earlier this month. Consumers can now call 1-888-MY HDDVD
(1-888-694-3383) for answers to general questions about HD DVD, for
operational assistance or for assistance with various promotions.

About Toshiba HD DVD Players

With the HD DVD format, select HD DVD players allow consumers to
experience true high def 1080p for extraordinary resolution that matches
the latest state of the art 1080p HDTVs. These same players display images
at 24 frames per second, the same frame rate used by directors when using
film to create motion pictures, for a smoother, more film-like, viewing
experience.

Important Notes:

HD DVD with high-definition content required for HD viewing. Up-
conversion of DVD content will result in near HD picture quality. Viewing
high-definition content and up-converting DVD content may require an HDCP
capable DVI or HDMI input on your display device. 1080p capable display
required for viewing content in 1080p. Firmware update may be required for
some interactive features depending on content, which may also require an
always-on broadband internet connection. Some features may require
additional bandwidth. To take advantage of web-enabled network content,
installing the latest firmware (ver.2.4 for HD DVD player models HD-XA1,
HD-A1, and HD-D1; ver.2.7 for HD-XA2, HD-A2, HD-A2W, HD-D2, HD-A2C, and
HD-A20; and ver.1.3 for HD-A35, HD-A30, and HD-A3) is required. Web-enabled
network features require an always on broadband connection along with
specific movie titles that include this form of content. For 24p output,
content that was created in 1080p/24 frames/sec is required. Viewing 24p
output requires an HD display capable of accepting a 1080p/24Hz signal. Use
of REGZA Link, which is a feature based on HDMI-CEC, requires an HDMI-CEC
compatible display device. Depending on the specifications of your TV, some
or all REGZA Link functions may not work even if your TV is HDMI-CEC
compatible. Dolby(R) Digital Plus, Dolby(R) TrueHD and DTS(R) support for
up to 5.1 channels (DTS HD(R) support for DTS(R) core only). MP3/WMA audio
files not supported. HDMI audio output requires connection to a PCM capable
device. Because HD DVD is a new format that makes use of new technologies,
certain disc, digital connection and other compatibility and/or performance
issues are possible. This may, in rare cases, include disc freezing while
accessing certain disc features or functions, or certain parts of the disc
not playing back or operating as fully intended. ISome features subject to delayed
availability. While every effort has been made at the time of publication
to ensure the accuracy of the information provided herein, product
specifications, configurations, system/component/options availability are
all subject to change without notice.

Oh no. HD DVD made such a big boo boo. I highly doubt, slashing the price will bring them victory. Bluray also have a cheap player wut, the PS3. Everything being equal, HD DVD will still end up the loser. Big time.

Now wait for the HD-DVD camp to slash the price of HD-DVD titles as well, then followed by price reduction for Blu-ray titles in retaliation biggrin.gif . All out war !!!.

When Toshiba HD-DVD players are cheap enough, can buy both HD-DVD player and PS3 and enjoy best of both worlds biggrin.gif .

I don't mind price war with blu-rays, get get more BOGO titles again then.. hehe! rclxms.gif

anyway, with more HD-DVD standalone players sold before christmas period compared to Blu-ray standalone players (red boys say don't count PS3 sales mah) and still lose to blu-ray movie sales every week in 2007, makes one wonder, if many of these cheapo HD-DVD player owners actually afford to buy HD-dvd discs or not? biggrin.gif

i dun think the A3 and A30 can do DTS HD MA internally. Only the A35 will decode it and send it out as bitstream. A35 = $299. Previously it was $499 tongue.gif biggrin.gif

its basically a rebadged A3 - according to insider info. Toshiba gave away the reference design of the HD A3 to three main DVD player manufacturers in China. So expect more chinese players using the reference design to market their product beginning April 2008 wink.gif

just get BD la.. no need prediction... build your software collection with the right format.. in the long run, supporting the wrong format will be more costly (due to buying the obsoleted original priced discs) than just tempted to getting a cheapest HD player..

PS3 is a software player. A software player can easily be updated wink.gif . better still wait for the 2.0 BD stanalone players to hit the street at $135. Anything more than that is a scam that should be avoided BY ALL COST wink.gif

PS3 is a software player. A software player can easily be updated wink.gif . better still wait for the 2.0 BD stanalone players to hit the street at $135. Anything more than that is a scam that should be avoided BY ALL COST wink.gif
*
Well, I would be happier if I can get a Blu-Ray / HD-DVD combo player at USD135 with 7 free movies. That's a much sweeter deal to encourage me to abandon the dvd format for good. tongue.gif

QUOTE
Samsung to discontinue UP5000 hybrid player
Only months after its introduction, Samsung has already decided to discontinue the BD-UP5000, its hybrid Blu-Ray/HD DVD movie player. The unit was to have been one of the most powerful players Samsung had produced, with 1080p24, HDMI 1.3, and an Ethernet port for Internet content; users have reported substantial problems with it however, such the inability to run HD audio codecs, or properly view discs such as Sunshine or 3:10 to Yuma. Other problems have included troubles with with standard DVDs or the 4:3 aspect ratio.

Although Samsung notes that no timeframe for the 5000's demise has been set, some preliminary reports suggested that it could come in May. A replacement is due in the second half of the year; this schedule is shared with the sibling UP5500, which also shares many of the same features.

Yup, that's the one ...... my precious but then .......... Samsung blu-ray players have incompatibility issues with certain blu-ray movies and they're slow in releasing firmware updates so maybe you wait until your neck long long also you still can't play your blu-ray movies unless with a PS3. Not sure about hd-dvd though as Samsung never released a hd-dvd player before. This BD-UP5000 ain't cheap, should cost RM3K to RM4K but our Asian model is BD-UP5500, will be released in the middle of this year, it's Profile 1.1 ready but no mention of Profile 2.0 or DTS-HD onboard decoding.

Well, I wouldn't spend a single buck on those BD players from Sony, overpriced and with old specs. PS3 is different, at least it's still a gaming console so if blu-ray failed like umds, we can still use it to play games, that's a safer investment. Of course, everyone here says that HD-DVD will be dead soon but the online petition to save the HD-DVD format has been encouraging thus far, guess that many people don't want Sony to monopoly the whole market with their blu-ray format. Some competition is still healthy. nod.gif

Blu-ray format not only for Sony lar...
look at the list of their member which includes Panasonic, Sharp, Samsung, LG, Philips, Dell etc...
It just that Sony had a bigger role and the main force to push it because of the PS3 and they also have a movie studio making software for it....their stakes are higher....
To be frank, both format ultimate objective is $$$$$$ and the royalty that comes with it....Toshiba had it for SD DVD and they will never want to lose that for nexgen DVD software....Microsoft just wanna kacau only....

Sony's proprietary formats are often shortlived, betamax, minidisc, umd and who knows maybe blu-ray? It might start with a bang now but if other movie studios are not making good money by going hi-def, they might focus more on standard dvds instead. Of course, I don't wish that to happen because I'm starting to love hi-def movies now. doh.gif

Do all think now is the time to buy HD or BD players? I mean the price is still kinda expensive and the technology has yet to stable, plus there aren;t a lot of choices in the market yet.

Honestly, you shouldn't rush to get one if your main purpose is just to watch HD-DVD or BD only. For myself, I happened to own a PS3 and XBOX 360 so that's a different story as I'm also into gaming too.

No problem ...... misunderstanding aje. Well, I also hope got someone wanna bulk this player, initially we got one forumer doing the bulk but cancelled it due to lack of interest, maybe if we can gather a few more people, we can ask him again. With the current pricing, it's a steal. I don't have any lubang when it comes to customs clearance so I dare not order from US. Some people has connections one, can import things by paying minimal taxes (in other words, it's called duit kopi or duit rasuah.)

You're too sensitive lah, I'm not talking about blu-ray movies here but at least I'm enjoying the current movies out for hd-dvd, Transformers, Fast And Furious, Van Helsing, Face Off, etc. Toshiba hd-dvd players are affordable, who wouldn't want one, better than spending a few times more on a dedicated blu-ray player (not PS3).

Both formats have their pros and cons but I can see that Toshiba's format is much more stable and have less hardware problems which is an added plus. PQ and SQ wise, I guess nobody will say that hd-dvd is inferior to blu-ray. Just some greedy movie studios will hope here or there if given some candies under the table.

Just some greedy movie studios will hope here or there if given some candies under the table.

at 1.2k a PS3 is already affordable bluray player (even though it's still twice the HD-dvd player price)...
if people can't see that 1.2k is affordable, then rm70-90 HD-dvds is not the right choice for them anyway, what's the point of cheap player when can't afford to buy movies? better spend more time on MKV downloads...

at the end of the day, for me, it's buying the right format of software and expand from there, why pay for discs in the soon to be dying format....

I did PM to yeah_guyz before, he said due to lack of interest, he is closing the bulk unless we can get a few confirmed orders here so not sure whether you guys wanna join in to make this bulk a successful one. At the current price range, I guess it's a steal for a decent hd-dvd player that upscales standard dvds with acceptable quality.

Not only that, the latest Samsung BD-UP5000 player can only play Dolby TruHD in 2.0 aje and not 5.1, it has some playback glitches too when you play movies like Fantastic Four 2, POC 3, We Own The Night, etc. Samsung only mentioned that it can be fixed by firmware updates but I find it surprising especially it is a brand new blu-ray player from them, surely they should have ironed out all bugs before launching it. To me, blu-ray players whether with profile 1.1 or 2.0 ready will not make a difference if they can't play all movies without any problems.

If I'm not mistaken, the player comes with 2 movies, then the other 5 movies can be picked from the mail in rebate catalogue but normally eBay sellers will have all the 7 movies picked for you but if you were to order from Amazon, the mail in rebate can't be used here since we're in Malaysia and not in the US.

If I'm not mistaken, A35 doesn't decode DTS-HD MA internally but can pass it as bitstream via HDMI and I believe you wouldn't want to use the analogue outputs since your amp can decode lossless audio tracks.

So, how leh? You wanna get A3 or A35 leh? Got any lubang to get one of these hd-dvd players?

gogo2, for wat i know, u won be getting bluray player as well, until jack sparrows are available biggrin.gif

so if one fine day, piracy becomes available for hd dvd, u will be getting one unit as well, no?

sunauto.. still deciding, wanna tumpang string lor...
*
Yup, some ppl are just waiting for the jack sparrow ones before they jump to the HD bandwagon provided it is dirt cheap.

Well, String cannot bawa balik too many stuff from the US I guess since a HD-DVD player with the box is still quite bulky. Of course, if he could bawa one balik, I would like to get the HD-A35 model. Guess, I'll PM him and see.

QUOTE(arj @ Feb 13 2008, 05:49 PM)
Latest update, A3 out of stock! So the fler is taking A30 instead and after nego, need to add US$10 and get 4 movies only. That means HD-A30 and 4 movies for under RM800! shocking.gif
*
There are some eBay sellers selling the HD-A35 for around RM900 and comes with 7 free movies. This is a very good deal since all the models are below RM1,000 and it's even cheaper than a high end upscaling dvd players from Denon, Marantz, Pioneer, etc.

Actually, there are no advantages here for bulking the Toshiba hd-dvd player, just that we don't have to worry about the customs clearance thingy and the player is delivered to our door step. If you wanna find someone to carry the player back from the US, a person may only carry one player the most and not two. Sadly, none of my relatives are going to the US, if not, I can ask them to bring back the player.

I have contacted Toshiba Malaysia, they said that there are no new players for this year when there are at least 3 HD-DVD models in the UK running on 220V. Sigh ....

Sony pulak will be bringing their new Blu-Ray player that can output 7.1 analogue and output lossless audio via bitstream. They will also be launching their new Bravia Full HD range as well sometime around this year. I'm a little disappointed with Toshiba, they sure have a tidak apa attitude and they don't even bother to bring in HD-DVD movies, they expect us to import them from overseas. I spoke to one of their Marketing people and I told her, I won't be surprised why blu-ray is leading in Malaysia, the hd-dvd format will not go far with a pricey and outdated player plus limited softwares here.

the retail selection of HD-DVDs in KL also like mati already (not dat I bought any at cut throat pricing)... few months ago in shops like rock corner / speedy got 10-25 titles on the shelf.. now it's like 20-30 titles for blurays and 3-5titles for HD-DVD (like clearance stocks).. haha!

Speedy Penang lagi teruk lah, not a single HD-DVD title for sale. My previous trip to Speedy Midvalley, I only saw a few HD-DVD titles like Hot Fuzz, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Hulk, Transformers, Mr Bean's Holiday, etc. I guess Berjaya HVN have stopped imported them oredi. It's a pity lah since I have no complaints with the HD-DVD format and if Paramount and Universal pergi to Blu-Ray, then I guess I'll dump all my $$$ on a high end blu-ray player instead with profile 2.0 ready but if both formats will be around like DVD Audio and SACD, I'll support both of them lor. Apa boleh buat since I do have a number of my favourite movies from Universal and Paramount. sweat.gif

I don't think getting the same deal again is possible because originally it is for an A3. The seller does not have it in stock and was willing to upgrade it to an A30 for a little bit more money.

You might be able to get this one for a very good price. It's a used unit though.

Seems like Toshiba is giving up on HD-DVD and they will lose millions of dollars by doing so. It's a double blow for Toshiba, firstly SED TV and now, HD-DVD. Surprisingly, Blu-Ray unofficially won the format war given Sony's past track record on their own proprietary formats, betamax, minidisc, umd, memory stick, etc ....... luck is really on their side this time especially with their blu-ray format.

Anyway, hd-dvd's lifespan is surprisingly short, even the laserdisc format lasted a while before it was phased out for good.

Well I dont simply say that HD DVD is dead without firm sources of news. By letting Bluray winning at this stage is no good either. I am sad that the competition has not provided benefits to consumers like us at this stage. I guess the issue of piracy is slowing the growth of hd lah.

Funny , i always thought that it was the issue of SIZE of these HD files which is slowing down the PIRACY. rolleyes.gif

The news of HD-DVD dead in the water is all over Engadget and Gizmodo. Good, now we can concentrate on leveraging singular format growth.

I think the price will go rock bottom because hd-dvd only lasted less than 2 years in the market and with limited titles, very unlikely they can goreng the price because everyone that I know are quickly selling off their hd-dvd stuff, player plus movies and you don't see people rushing to buy one because it's at half price. In addition, most people got a dvd upscaling player liao so no point buy hd-dvd player lor, rite? If not, can buy a Cap Ayam dvd player and upscale via a good AV amp with a built video upscaler

I worry without any competition from now onwards, we won't get better deals anymore for BDs. That's the purpose for HD-DVD format to be around, to create a price war for the benefit of consumers like us.

lol - i was a chief purchaser once - that is why, i am not an early adopter as i could not bear paying big bucks for any item especially when the price is still aggressively going down hill! Ask silencer how much he bought his 42 fullHD sharp display and how much the price is now!

and also, i dun watch TV. I used by computer to watch all my DVDs tongue.gif my computer has a 17in Samsung CRT. It is almost 7yo. As CRT TV prices are almost saturated and taking into consideration i dont watch TV and will prevent people from watching TV in my house, I will most probably get $999 Philips 32" Wide screen Pixel Plus CRT tv (it is 100hz and it is equiped with progressive scan. (that is if i can still find the TV) put it the living room for few years. My ultimate target is basically a 42in/47in 1080i or 1080p Plasma TV. The models that are currently available in the market are priced RM15K and above.

Hopefully in 2-3 years time, the price of LCD will be saturated and Plasma prices; nearing saturation wink.gif

Onother reason that i am not in dire need of a hidef TV is because - BDs have to be imported from Amazon. Dun kid ourself that BD is going to go mainstream in Malaysia and uncle Hos are still busy making money selling VCD rclxub.gif

So see how lah cool.gif

I worry without any competition from now onwards, we won't get better deals anymore for BDs. That's the purpose for HD-DVD format to be around, to create a price war for the benefit of consumers like us.
issit? when HD-dvd around, I tot some people still went ahead to buy HD-dvds instead of spending money to buy totally Blu-ray products n their bogos.. biggrin.gif

That's because blu-ray players are still expensive and they have a lot of compatibility issues b'coz of the hardware profile thingy. It's doesn't mean victory to blu-ray camp even if hd-dvd is out of the race because their market share is still small if compared to the dvd format. Who knows, maybe another competing format will appear in the near future. Frankly speaking, 50GB is not enough as some blu-ray movies come on a few discs so it's no different from our standard dvds. I would prefer if they can stuff everything on a single disc.

I use PS3 personally never had any compatibility issue so far wor, all my discs works as advertised (at least for the movie stored in the disc and it's accompanying audio soundtracks)..
as for blu-ray players being more expensive? IMHO, if you can't afford those blu-ray players then even buying ori hd-dvds or blurays would also be a expensive proposition, why bother with ori HD in the 1st place?, I mean the diff between a 199 HD-dvd player and 299 bluray player is only around 5-7 ori discs.. if cannot pay for 5-7ori discs then liddat better stick to normal unker ho dvds.. tongue.gif biggrin.gif

At last, its official.
Taken form Toshiba site:

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.

Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.

This decision will not impact on Toshiba's commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.

Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.

QUOTE
5:00PM - Right on time, Toshiba's president, Nishida-san, takes the podium. He is talking about how great and advanced HD DVD was. WAS. He is also speaking about how Toshiba shared a good partnership with Warner. "There was a difficult decision. Multiple standards have a huge impact on consumers."

5:15 - Now he's just reading from the release, more or less. They're on to bigger and better things: two new NAND factories in Japan, one will be jointly-operated with SanDisk.

5:21 - Q&A time!

Three part Q: what was the cause of HD DVD's failure? What is Toshiba doing with its Aomori HD DVD factory? And what about the timing of the announcement?
A: From an objective, fair point of view, we were clearly in a good place until last December and January. So we were very, very surprised by Warner's announcement. As for the Aomori factory, nothing is final at this moment.

Q: Any plans to adopt Blu-ray?
A: No plans at all, not at this moment.

Q: Are there no plans for next gen optical disc at all?
A: We don't have any plans to announce at this time.

Q: Is there any risk of a class action lawsuit against Toshiba for the format war?
A: [For early adopters] there will be always be a risk in buying, that is how it works in the US. We are just hardware maker, so our legal risk is relatively low, we believe.

some of the Slimfit 29" can do 720p and 1080i so its on par with many of the 32" LCDs in term of resolution. but none of the 29" go HDMI so one cannot upconvert standard dvd to hidef.

Are you sure it's really 720p or 1080i that the Samsung Slimfit is displaying? Doesn't mean it can input 1080i, it can also display at that resolution. If I am not mistaken the 720p/1080i input is just to give you the impression that it's a HD unit, but in actual fact it just input the 720/1080 signal and downconvert it back to 480 only.

I think it has to do with some sort of licencing deal which disallows HD through component . Maybe to prevent illegal copying issues. HDMI has got better built-in protection to prevent illegal copying, I think. But I guess certain upscale players (like from LG) which still allows upconversion through component, but only for non-protected content.

I am still hazy, so better wait for the experts' comments.

Anyway on the topic of Samsung slimfit TV, if I am correct, it is not a real HD display so whether you input 720P/1080i signal through HDMI or Component, the final display will still be downconverted to 480.

That's for sure as CRT tv is limited to 480 lines and not more than that, it can never replace a HD ready set but it's good for watching standard definition sources like Astro and our normal dvds.

Well, some of the earlier Samsung and Cap Ayam dvd players can upconvert via component but since it's an analogue connection, it always suffer from Y/C delay unlike HDMI, the bandwith is more and it can carry more information.

Don't forget that for the XA2, it is region locked to region 1, unless you're watching region 1 or ahem dvds, your original region 3 dvds won't work on it unless you rip them and burn them on a dvd-r. Secondly, XA2 plays hd-dvd softwares like a kura-kura, it's so slow that you feel like throwing it out of your window. doh.gif

my soon to be housemate is pushing me to get a tv. he will staying for a year or so and will move to his on house after that. and yeah the slimfit tv is for him to watch his korean and jap series that i have no interest what so ever, and oh i will seal the terrestial TV connector at the living room to prevent people from watching TV1,2,8,9 and NTV7. laugh.gif so basically, the slimfit will be exclusive for my soon to be house's mate's uncle ho dvds.

and for nephews and niesces when they come visiting.

and yeah - the 720p and 1080i thingy are probably the input source only. The tv is made to be able to accept 720p and 1080i souce. So they claim its a HDTV ready TV. its basically the same as the Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung and LG 42in Plasma TVs where they sell the models as 720p but in reality they 1024x768 resolution panel cannot natively do 720p which requires 1280x720 native resolution wink.gif

yeap, that's why my 34" Pixel Plus TV plus Samsung HD 950 DVD upconvert through component
video makes this combination last a very long time before HDTV LCD 1080P become standard
resolution. tongue.gif

Yeah, I always think 720p is just transitional resolution
due to high cost to manufacture 1080p. That's how those
electrical company make so much money.... tongue.gif Those
buy 720p will change to 1080p in the future.

That's for sure as CRT tv is limited to 480 lines and not more than that, it can never replace a HD ready set but it's good for watching standard definition sources like Astro and our normal dvds.
err.. hello?? sony made1080p CRT before being phased out.. what you mean limited to 480 lines..??

even pariah ones can do 600+lines with PAL rez..
