Most keyboards can be dumped into water. Just dry it and it will work perfectly again.

Haha..
There isn't a single desktop keyboard in my house that hasn't been washed at least once..its ok as long as you use mild soap and leave it to dry perfectly later (few days is best).

Wokeh, back from dinner. I'll just answer all the questions 1st. It's an Apple Keyboard which my kids have been using. It's extremely dirty n I decided it was time to give it a total overhaul. Those who asked if it will be damaged, no it doesnt get damaged. U hafta make sure to leave it to dry properly n it works perfectly after that.

I've been telling ppl about washing the keyboard this way sooooooo many times but most ppl just think I'm nuts n tokin nonsense. So this time I'm gonna take pictures n document it for every1 to see. N to prove my point, I used a pretty expensive keyboard so that ppl wont say it's just a cheap experiment with rm10 keyboard. laugh.gif

Uploading the pics to Photobucket right now. Will update once they're in the bucket.

Haih. Took ages for Photobucket to get those pics in. Must be our dearest Streamyx slowing down on weekend. Anyway, here goes.

A warning 1st. The picture coming up is extremely gross n if u havent eaten dinner or about to go out for supper, u better avoid the 1st pic. It gruesome!

Here's how gruesome a KB gets after a year of usage. Food, dust, hair, n god knows what else ends up inside. I thought of just using compressed air and a microfiber cloth to wipe it clean. Then I decided to pry off a few keys to see how bad it is. I immediately decided that the only way to get it clean was a total bath after seeing how gross it was. sweat.gif

user posted image

Close up shot of just how gross it is. sweat.gif

user posted image

So, off I went to the bathroom to mix up a nice soapy bath for my dirty rotten Apple. laugh.gif

user posted image

Taped the USB plug to the wall so it stays dry.

user posted image

SPLASHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

user posted image

Scrubiddy scrub scrub. this is to get the surface of the keys back to brand new whiteness.

user posted image

Leaving it to soak for a while. This is for dissolving all the built up grease inside. I gave it sum vigorous shaking n swishing to make sure the soap water gets into all the parts. I'll just leave it there for a while b4 rinsing it out with clean water.

user posted image

That's it. It's still in the bucket of water right now. I'll go take it out, rinse it out n prepare it for drying. I'll update again after that.

I thought keyboard itself got some sort of grease on beneath larger key like space bar and shift keys..

Wouldn't those got washed off and result a bit stiff during typing process ...

or uncle's keyboard is different...

I think some keyboards do have that, my cheap Logitech has become noticably sitffer since I washed it (no choice then, some ants started to build a colony in my keyboard, believe it or not). Gonna do something bout it soon.

Edit : Must have been half asleep when I typed that..I guess I gave the wrong idea..wat I need to fix are the stiff keys..about the ants, read below.

The Apple kb doesn't haf any grease. Even if the kb uses grease, it's very simple to rectify, after washing just use sum white grease on it.
I actually modded my Apple kb with sum grease on the WASD keys to make them smoother last time. Since my kids dont play FPS games, I'll just leave it alone this time. biggrin.gif

Ya actually mobos can cleaned like that too. No problem. The extreme overclockers who do subzero cooling wash their mobos coz it's the only way to clean off the grease from the CPU socket.

Didn't have a digicam then (still don't, cos the ony one I had conked out), and I've cleaned out the keyboard the moment I found them..tossed them outside onto the grass then gave the keyboard a bath to get rid of the stragglers and their leftovers..

Suspected something wrong then when there was always an ant trail on my table, and always got stuff under my keyboard no matter how many times I clean it..suspected something like that but didn't expect to be right when I unscrewed open the keyboard..god..there must have been thousands in there, with all the babies too.. shocking.gif

Now I make sure I don't let crumbs fall between the keys anymore. mad.gif No more little brown ants making their home in my hardware bruce.gif

I washed my keyboard also today after looking at this thread, but not using this method lah, the dust & hair under the keys can't easily cleanup by just directly sink in water. I disassembled the keyboard, took out all keys, then wash them, faster to dry also, I am using the newly washed keyboard to type right now. smile.gif

All I did was swirl it like hell inside the tub of soap water n all the gruesome stuff came out like magic. I din hafta remove anything. After that I used the sponge to clean off the key surfaces to amke them pure white again. Will take pics of my "new" Apple keyboard later. thumbup.gif

Almost all electronics can survive clean water, just need to dry them properly. Its liquids other than pure water which are a problem, especially carbonated drinks.

Can 1. As long as u dry it out 100% then it shud b ok. Even handphones fall into swimming pool will survive if u pull the battry out immediately, open up the case, rinse with distilled water n let dry 100%. Most ppl panic n start making test call to c if the phone is still working n that's what kills it. laugh.gif

Wokeh, finally got time to take pics n upload after a hectic xmas week.

Just look at how spanking clean the KB is now. N no scrubbing involved too. All I did was dunk teh KB into the bucket n swirl it in the soap water.

U can put under the sun or put it in a nice dry place with a lot of airflow. Ur usual place where u turn on the table fan wud b good too coz it'll make sure it dries out nicely.

My purpose is to let the soap water get in n do it's job. That's y it's sparkling clean now. After that, fill the tub with clean water n keep rinsing n changing the water a few times to make sure u wash out all the soap water. Then just take it out, give it a few good flings to fling out the water, then put under the sun.

lol, like this also can open a thread. Anyway good job ianho.
My method wont be dunk in the whole keyboard. I just open the top part inlcude the key. And leave the rubber contact and those thin flims aside. This method fast to dry up. So that the water wont go indise between the fllims, if get inside will get stick, u know la soap characteristic if you dont rinse it well. And is impossilbe to rinse well.

i just followed the method that you did uncle ianho. but i still need to pull out all the keys because the stain is even tougher. I never clean this keyboard since 2002 sweat.gif sweat.gif. After i pulled out all the keys, you can imagine the worst scenario ever maybe 100x stain than your apple KB. laugh.gif

U can do it for mobos n stuff. But the drying time will be even longer coz of all the tiny lil gaps in between the caps contacts. For that u really need to make sure they're really dry.

Mobo takes longer to dry coz the water goes inside under the capacitors n inside all the contact points like the CPU socket, RAM slots, PCI slots.

Its really hard to say, especially for BGA chips like the Northbridge and the Southbridge, water gets inside easily due to capillaric effect but hard to get out.

Yup, wiping with a damp cloth, it dries up very fast after that. Less than an hour I can already run the PC safely.

I hope we won't have to repeat this too many times..

All electronics with no power connected (remember to remove batteries too) will survive being dunked (even soaked) in clean water as long as they are dried 100% afterwards. Mild soap/dishwash should also be ok, but must be rinsed off properly.

Sad la only apple can do it. I wish my razor can
*
not only apple la doh.gif . I did it with my old compaq keyboard, I make sure it is 100% dry after i washed it. I did it for one day only. i used all of the method uncle ianho mentioned before, and wala...it works fine and feels like a brand new keyboard smile.gif

ps: when i say all of the method i mean i did all off it like, dry under the sun, dry using hairdryer, i opened the keyboard and rinsed properly and finally dried it infront of the fan...hehe cool.gif

For me about 3 days directly under a air-con (air-con air is freaking dry even though its not hot). Have to shake out all excess water first though, or it will take longer than that.

Drying a laptop will take a long time, probably at least a few months, unless you completely disassemble it.

Can, but polishing the keys is a bit problematic. Even if the time taken to do it is not a problem for you, often you'll end up removing the letters as well..

i think it won't work with all keyboards and it also depends a lot on how dry you get after the wash. The apple keyboard shown seems to be well build for water resistance. When keys are plugged in, it looks like no gap for water to go into the internal case. All the opening also looks nicely sealed.

I can't say the same for some cheap rm20 keyboard. To wash those or others like logitech or microsoft, maybe need to unscrew the keyboard for drying the internal parts after wash.

I have not done this, maybe will try the next time. I just had mine washed like 2 months back where I take out the keys one by one...really tiring. tongue.gif

The Apple kb is not waterproof. The crystal back is perfect for seeing where the water goes n the water went inside every nook n cranny. It goes inside n under every single key too. While washing it, u can see the back of the kb crystal part, it's like an aquarium. All mechanical kb shud be just fine. I wudn wanna dunk my G15 though. The water will take too long to dry out as it will get inside the LCD n everything. So, use this method for most normal kb but dont go dunking electronic kb like G15, diNovo Edge n the likes.

The keys on the Apple keyboards (up till the current slim profile aluminium models) can be easily removed by gently prying them out with your fingers. That's the whole magic of the Apple KB's easy user maintenance. smile.gif

Of course it works. Why would I post this up if it didn't? All electronic gadgets can be dunked into water without damage provided there's no electricity running through it. As long as the item is switched off, it wont short out.

Can even drop handphone into toilet, just be quick to take it out of water n remove the battery. Then open the case, flush with clean water n make sure to dry it out properly. After that just spray some contact cleaner with anti corrosion additive on the motherboard n it's good to go. Common mistake by most people is they go make a phone call while the phone is wet to see if the phone still working. That's the worst thing to do.

you can clean the keyboard with water.. and it will still work.. because afaik most keyboards have less complicated wiring inside.. just a wee bit of wiring

1. drain the any electrical charge before you wash it.. just touch the usb to ground wire or any other conductor ( correct me if im wrong ) to transfer the electrical charge

2. you gotta make sure.. that the keyboard is completely dry before you plug it into any electrical current... not the keys and what not.. you gotta make sure the electrical components are dry..

Replying to posts like that really fed up. Already replied so many million times. If it doesn't work, do u think I will do it?????? The keyboard is sitting nicely on the table n working nicely until today. If u don't understand the principals of electricity n electronics, don't make silly posts like that.

Will update once they're in the bucket.

wasai~ but really don dare to do if i using tat expensive keyboard....takut la!!!
