What is the Meizu M8?

Meizu M8 (aka MiniOne) is a phone, sorta looking like the Apple iPhone, with about the same features and others (according to Popular Science Magazine, it has been dubbed the "iPhone Clone").












What are the specs?

Specs were released sometime in May. Here they are in english (from Meizu Me):

Dimensions: 105mm x 58mm x 11.8mm (H x W x T)

Processor: ARM11 667MHz + Video Codec

Light sensor allowing the phone to automatically adjust screen brightness in accordance to the lightning in the environment.
Tilt and movement recognizing sensor that will allow it to auto-adjust screen orientation in accordance to tilting. It can also recognize movements (ie. shaking), a feature which can be used for games.
NEW!! In a Meizu news conference, an agent at the conference posted a picture of a powerpoint presentation. It suggests that the MiniOne will have the following features:

-Video camera funtion
-picure function
-TV output
-games
-external keyboard function
-USB Host
-"DMB" (i don't know what this is)
-LINE-IN function, possibly for microphones
-GPS function
-Wireless internet
-Bluetooth

When will the phone be released???

The M8 exact release date is unknown. However final prototypes have been created and is the phone in production. Marketing and packaging are being designed (unconfirmed). We can expect it on the market sometime in the late 4th quarter of 2007 (rumors said December 8, 2007) to 2Q of 2008.

How much will the phone be?

UPDATED: There will be three versions: a 4gb, 8gb, and 16gb.

4GB - 2000 CNY (about RM900)
8GB - 2500 CNY (about RM1120)
16GB - 3500 CNY (about RM1600)

Will the M8 work outside of China?!?!?

Yes, since the M8 will be using GSM, which US service provider AT&T Cingular and T-Mobile use. I'm not so sure of Europe but they use T-Mobile as well (I think). There is a SIM card slot in the back of the phone (confirmed here: http://www.meizu.com/bbs/dispbbs.asp?board...=544644&page=1)

Latest News (24th May 2008):
A month ago, Meizu CEO Jack Wong announced that the user interface was to be redesigned by eico design, a well-known Chinese design firm that has worked with the likes of Lenovo, Google and Phillips.

Just wonder why China people love unoriginal stuffs? Can't they just come out something original since they've accumilated so much experiences by copying so many phones?

However this should beat the hell out of the iPhone with all those superb specs! Too bad no flash...

...still scare the battery explode thing lar...

Well, I dun mind copy. Although in fact Meizu did produce your product plan before iPhone launch.
For me, as long the product is great and spec is good.

I think finger tough phone is going to be the trend for coming years. Nokia, SE both ald have their own design in place and should show their own touch screen phone next year.

have been waiting for meizu to launch and available for freaking long time. its probably the best copy for iphone which features most of iphone spec but better too. with that price i doubt people will resist the temptation too..

This is MEIZU man, not those damn clones we saw before, not those apple clone, Zen clone, blah blah.

First to praise is that it must have a very very superb sound quality, can put Ipod touch in shame I'm sure.

Miezu is off my list, looks like a big copy cat, who cares if their product has quality. MEIZU copycat!

They are quite a brand company in China. They made MP3 player. I think you can find a lot of Meizu MP3 player in market here or even in lowyat forum.

Copycat or not, as long it is better than the original, then it is still great. At least they make a version that even better and affortable...

which is a highly reputable brand in making DAPs and PMPs for its high audio quality and file format support including FLAC and WAV and other stuff...

Well, to be fair, iPhone now can record video and can even record in high quality using 3rd party app. See here.

Meizu M8 will available next year but not sure can buy it from local retail shop. The reason I put this phone up here in this forum is to create interest among lowyat forumer and hope more and more ppl know abt it. Hope it will create high demand and someone will bring this phone to Malaysia and sell it...

Well, the design maybe the same, but when the Gphone concept once came up, it's almost the same.(although it does not exist anymore)

And then the LG Prada phone has the almost same design too, so, there are more copy and paste out there, and the rumored nokia Nphone, is pretty much the same design. Seriously, how far can you go on the design on a touch interface phone?

You can say it copies and is a fake model of iphone, but again...This is Meizu. It's not that kind of whatever Chaplang Branded fake china phones on the street, it is a very known brand for it's audio quality. Which I'm sure that nokia, LG or even apple cannot copy

that PMP already selling in lowyat if not mistaken. there's a bulk for that also.

cy97, yeah that'a the meizu m6, just dunno if it's m6sp or m6sl, has definitely good sound quality, a very good choice if you want mp3 or mp4 players haha.

You see, each of the "copycat" at least have their own design of the OS. However if you look at the pictures, it's a *complete* rip off, even the OS, layout, icons. Good brand or bad brand, a complete rip off is a complete rip off.

That said, Meizu is a young company, how much knowledge they have to create a functional phone software is still a myth. In the end it's still a phone, which, long term phone maker like Ericsson and Nokia still cannot be beaten unless Meizu really spend lots of effort.

Whatever it is, let's hope it'll be even better than iPhone. And hope they'll come out with their own design of the OS if what you said is true that the pictures are not official.

PS: Oh, I thought iPod has very good sound quality?

The phone will only launch next year around second quarter. So you will have to wait and hope it will sell here...

wow pigcat, if you have the knowledge that Ipod has a very good sound quality, then I cant blame you for saying the design is a ripoff.

Those design were not official, so which means the Icon and the layout were Photoshop-ed by the fans.

And I don't think you googled for any information before you post your messages in here, do you?

If you're afraid of the battery explode thing, don't use any IT gadgets, you know, the most famous gadget for the explode thing is Apple Ipod Nano.

ipod is just overrated.. no fm radio, no sound recorder but sold at high price

we as end users, we should care about price, quality, functions, appearance etc.... everything that benefit and concern the users, who gives a fark whether it is a rip-off, it makes do difference at all to the end users, only some apple-dumbfarks care.

Haha... you guy should let the law decide whether Meizu is copycat. For us, the consumer, we just look at whether the product is good and whether we like it. If you like M8, then you just like the product and not because it is iphone like.

But I think there will be many similiar phone like IPhone coming out soon, from SE or Nokia. IPhone just bring out the trend.

For IPhone supporter, I can understand why they angry at those similiar product that sell at lower price. Because this take away the uniqueness of IPhone they enjoy.

Uhuh, and paying a high price does not guarantee high quality products from Apple. I have 3 different Ipods before, none last more than 2 years.

Meizu Pwns.. IF u look it more clearly, U can start to diffretiate the difference betwen that and an I-Phone....

I know they have the mods but for my trained ears, original iPod already very good sound quality, I really enjoy very much with just the stock headphone a lot (my gf has the iPod 5th gen ipod video white 80GB that I bought for her). How it compare to the meizu I have no idea though. Seriously, sometimes audiophiles can confuse themself too, if you know what I mean.

That said, I'm judging only on the picture alone, whether the end retail product is the same or not we still don't know. Hopefully they'll come out with original design.

No I haven't google for any information (which one?) yet.

I didn't know the iPod nano known for battery explode, but I was just joking in my previous post.


Of course if Meizu really can come out with similar specs and design as in the first post, it'll really benefit the end user. Hmm did I say copycat produce bad product??

That said, copycat will receive less respect from the public. Again, I was judging from the pictures, so we'll see how's the final retail product looks like.

If Meizu M8 able to launch their product next year to all over asia, I will say Apple will suffer a lot due to their agreement with AT & T. Since IPhone is not officially supported in Asia. Meizu will gain upper hand in the market against Apple.

If I am Meizu, I will do a lot of marketing campaign in Asia before launch and gain market interest since IPhone not able to enter the Asia market officially. By the time Apple able to offically sell IPhone in Asia, Meizu ald gain most of the market share and with this price, it will be hard for IPhone sales.

There were rumors about Meizu showcasing a working prototype at CES 2008 which has just ended last week.
But according to Meizu's CEO (refer link below), they will only show M8 at CeBIT (March 4-9, Hannover, Germany).

Why must one bother about the design of the phone, rip off this rip off that.
Apple never say anything about it, why must the fans?

They make the design like that isn't going to kill anyone.
As long as they can sell and the consumer satisfied with it, that's all that matters.

Popular brand isn't everything, look at i-mobile 902, it takes better picture than any other 5mp phones as far as my eyes can tell.
And if you just walk to someone and ask them what is i-mobile, they'll just say dunno.

...I don't agreed with this statement...although i never use Meizu's product but from my observation, they had their owned follower from world wide...meaning their product had a good reputation (not only for poor ppl but i think the quality and the price are wise/affordable).

tho im a mac user, i still think that one of the main determinants before purchasing a certain product is the value for money.

value for money its one of the most important factor in buying anything...as long it has a good quality comparable to its value..its ok wat..

for apple lovers..perhaps this meizu is a clone..but at least its improving the iphone specs n thus create a slight competition for iphone.. ...thus, we customer will benefit from this...

Everybody can come out something like iphone or even better with THAT size of motherboard...

I think they still have some hard time to squeeze lots of stuffs into a small size device like that? IMO iphone already did really well especially the battery life to power such device. I wouldn't hold my breath on this...

that huge board there is actually just an engineering sample made by Meizu specifically for the show and they do not have enough time to make a proper sample device...

at least thats what engadget said...

haha...but from the spec list on Post #1, i still can't grab the concept of having dual camera but no 3G on this Meizu.

DMB is a standard of mobile broadcasting, not the usual TV broadcast. thus it needs participation of content provider to provide one (dunno we got it here or not).
