First step is always to do it within the realms of your computer, meaning no internet usage.
You should first close running background applications (see taskbar). Currently, the only 3rd party software running on my Vista is AVG Free Edition Anti-virus software. That's it. Next, you should try deleting prefetch (its like refreshing Vista). Go to My Computer > C: > Windows > Prefetch. Delete all the files except for the folder. Confirm deleting. Some files may pop-back instantly, that's fine. You don't have to delete it again and again. Now empty the contents of the folder in Prefetch. Next, you should right click on your drive letter (e.g C:) and properties. Then use Disk Cleanup. Select all the boxes and then on OK. You can free hundreds of megabytes just by doing so. Next is a step that some strongly do not believe is necessary. But I do believe. Vista may defragment your drive automatically, but its best to do it yourself. Just like the above step. Right-click on your drive letter and then on Properties. Then on Tools > Defragmenter. Next is a step that I have done before, but due to overcomplications of which one to turn off, you can definitely go here: http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm Best is to use the advice from the "Safe" column. Added on January 29, 2008, 4:19 pmAlternatively, you can go to my thread: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/601723 Best if when using the msconfig step, you the blackviper.com guide on disabling certain services. Vista is a crap... yeah more "nicer" GUI and DX 10 features...
but as you look at the performance, it takes down your memory and processing power way too much... slowing down your computer for no reason. even my XP i tear down all the visuals and leave every thing blank, like win 98 theme... it performs 10% faster and cut down the paging file usage by 100MB |

im very impressed that you used Process Explorer to troubleshoot your problem. I see most forumers here never bother to even investigate the nature of the problem before asking.
Ive ran across several rigs with the same problem before and all of them seem to have this empty videos files or XVid installed. I would suggest that you disable video thumbnails preview and see if this fixes the problem. And of course, ntdll doesnt mean anything because system drivers can be called by that process too. Use "xperf" from Microsoft to capture kernel hit count to identify the offending module. |
