shiney...
the dragon's pic...
direct flash too harsh...=)..
as u can c...
onlyt he front part is lighted...
so...
u need something to bounce or diffuse ur flash...
for the time being....y not try putting a white a4 paper in front of ur flash...
that shud soften the light while waitng for ur SB-800! hehehehe...

for the flowers...it's a wee bit underexposed to me...i think...
sorry didnt calibrate my monitor...
it's best if u juz focus the flower instead of including the leaves beside it...and also the top part of the flower....shud have cropped it out...
second flower...u also noticed...not sure where's ur focus point though...

for the silhoutte pics...if u could...
use a tripod and remote shutter or delay...will reducs the blur...

=)
pracetive makes perfect bro...

You using closest area or single area AF? Try using single area and sticking to the center AF point, use focus lock and recompose if you want to shift the focus point to another part of the frame.

1. MCL probably needs a bit more depth? I think it blurred at "M", would have been nice if M was clear as well.

2. The hibiscus looks out of focus. The idea was good though, the red stood out.

3. How come ada flare at ur model face? tongue.gif added during post process?

The photos were vibrant in colours which was nice. No shots of the classroom? Like some chalk on the board, last words that the teacher wrote on the whiteboard... your desk?

i know it's good if u want to learn MF...

check ur white balance....or shoot raw then adjust it in PP...
u take a look at ur flickr...
the pic of 2 gurls going down the escalator...badly OOF...

try using exposure compensation...
it's ok..it takes time...even i have only known how to use it 2 days ago...=)

I noticed that your pictures have a lot of dead space at the top of the photo especially those taken at Cineleisure. Read up on the rules of third and composition and I am sure it will greatly help your photos.

bro..
it's not the jpeg or compression thingy...
maybe the exposures u used to compose the HDRI has not enough details in the shadows and highlights...
in HDRI..
usually both the shadow(dark) and hightlight(bright) part still retain its details...=)

HDR takes 3 exposures....
1 - balance as per camera metered
2 - lower exp
3 - higher exp
combine all 3 to get the HDRI effect...

i just noticed when im vewing my photos from another pc ( monitor )
its very dark, and almost some tone of color is kinda missing.
i did set it back to default. hmm.

hmm, yeah its kinda dark, but what to do. it was dark like 7 p.m
some shots were taken at morning & evening. im kinda confused with
this in photography :/ do we actually brightened the pic ( even though its arent )
or just capture what we see with our eyes?
just read an article
about the perfect exposure tongue.gif

the horse photo i cant go any further, artificially and by camera.
there's not enough light, cough cough might need sb-600 lol.
to cross light it tongue.gif

thanks bro, looking forward from you again rclxms.gif
please do correct me if i said something wrong ya!

when the overall light is less...
we use bigger aperture or longer shutter...even at night...there's no such thing as i t was too dark...=)

i think wat u mean is fill flash...
cross lighting is when u have 2 light sources from opposite side....

came back home and checked it was blurry, i need moar practice.
whats the best settings for night shots?

set up 15 min...mean u r using tripod...rite? if ur hand is not steady enough...u can try use short timer...tis will solve if ur hand is not steady enough when pressing the shutter...

yeap?

owh, i like MF better. more control but not so results tongue.gif
pratice makes perfect. i only use AF when shooting
landscape.

MF will make ur eye tire...if u shoot too many pics (& sometime not even clear after u downloaded into ur pc oni know then is too late...if some priceless moment.. doh.gif )...try set ur AF point to oni 1 & center...the u can use the AF to catch the right position (ur catch items) & then move ur angle or view finder to ur dream view & then shoot...
btw...jus my point of view oni...me oso beginner... blush.gif

I got the opportunity to play with the same flash-gun you got using during LYN  Zoo Negara outing today, it worked well with my D70.

But, i already kena poison by SB-600 - got commander mode!!!

yea, any camera after d70 can trigger the sb-600 remotely. but bare in mind that it triggers via flashes from the built in, so sometimes will still see some direct flash. sb800 does a better job as it uses IR i think, not sure.

bro...
it's NOT commander mode...
ucant control other flashes with sb600...
u need SB800 or SU800 to do that...

i think wat u mean is...
u can control it using D70 commander mode...
if thats the case...
SB600 is used remote flash...NOT commander.

Impressive. The things you did with your D40. Makes me wanna get one myself...

Do you have any other lens? Or you just go shooting with your kit lens?

I noticed that the colours in your photos are very nice. Quite saturated. Is it already like this when taken using your camera, or did you increase the saturation when you photoshopped the photos?

How do you use a Bounce Card? Sorry I don't own a dslr, can't imagine how it works. It'd be great if you could teach me biggrin.gif

How did you use the flash here? Using built-in flash of your RM90 flash? Direct flash or bounced somewhere?

After viewing your flickr, wow I'm speechless. Your photos totally blew my mind off. Didn't think a D40 could produce such breath-taking pictures. Totally believe that it's the photographer not the equipment that matters.

Still very impressed that you only started photography in Nov 07 (well, judging from the time you opened your thread) and you improved so much within just 3 to 4 months. Really respect notworthy.gif

If you please, would you mind replying to my questions above? Thanks!

got poisoned by SB-800 ? :lol
*
not really, i just want the features. i've heard sb-600 can break quite easily.

QUOTE(soulfly @ Feb 10 2008, 02:50 PM)
dude how did u use the flash in this photo? did u flash directly or bounce with reflector or what?
*
only achievable with my 90 ringgit flash, used my home made bounce card to get it.
if you use nikon flashes, it'll limit your shutter speed. no reflector. just 90 ringgit flash,
home made bounce card and kit lens.

i only have my kit lens with me, saturday's photo my cousin lend me his 10-20mm sigma f/4 super wide
lens, today. i shoot another wedding ceremony and some fashion shooting around titiwangsa.
i cant upload them now coz no Photoshop =.="

Yes, before this i set it to vivid mode, now im using normal. it's quite saturated.

No, i did not. i only used histograms on my photos. nothing else.

Quick tip for you here mate. Notice that under those harsh sunlight their faces always have shadows? Pop up your built-in flash, dial it -1eV and fill up their faces with the flash. Then it would be better smile.gif

Nothing wrong with the pictures, but of course can improve right?

With sunglasses it would be tricky. That you mean your position and all have to be in such an angle that the reflection isn't caught.

The fill-in flash would definitely help out a lot especially with the group shots. Because from the photos, it was taken from a low angle, hence the boys were tilting their head downwards while the sun was directly above them causing the shadow.

I learned this from one of my workshops with Ted Adnan. He recently blogged about this as well. Check out his blog post here.

QUOTE(Mavik @ Feb 20 2008, 12:46 AM)
Quick tip for you here mate. Notice that under those harsh sunlight their faces always have shadows? Pop up your built-in flash, dial it -1eV and fill up their faces with the flash. Then it would be better smile.gif
*
thanks! biggrin.gif

QUOTE(Mavik @ Feb 20 2008, 12:55 AM)
Nothing wrong with the pictures, but of course can improve right?

With sunglasses it would be tricky. That you mean your position and all have to be in such an angle that the reflection isn't caught.

The fill-in flash would definitely help out a lot especially with the group shots. Because from the photos, it was taken from a low angle, hence the boys were tilting their head downwards while the sun was directly above them causing the shadow.

I learned this from one of my workshops with Ted Adnan. He recently blogged about this as well. Check out his blog post here.

bro, are you still on D40 kitlens (Nikor 18-55mm II ED)?

funny, bcoz i got the same lens but cannot get same quality as yours. Normally i will use my 28-80mm instead. Dono why my lens tends to underexposed even with flash-bounced.

typo... too much lens poison now.. sweat.gif

bro, are you still on D40 kitlens (Nikor 18-55mm II ED)?

funny, bcoz i got the same lens but cannot get same quality as yours. Normally i will use my 28-80mm instead. Dono why my lens tends to underexposed even with flash-bounced.
typo... too much lens poison now..  sweat.gif

Bro, what are you settings when shooting (the underexposed one?). What mode are you shooting? M, A, or S?

For normal wedding shot i always on Aperture Priority mode. shot between at 28-80mm f between 4-7 for groups photo, and wide open for close-up portraits. ISO 200-400 with bounce flash.

the 18-55mm one, even i shot at 18mm wide open (f3.5) the image would be underexposed. But looking at shiney's pic i think he shot at f6-7, but the quality is really good compared to me with same lens.

i use 5.6 constant aperture because i keep zooming in and out. the lens is pretty limited sweat.gif
yeah, some of my photos are underexposed too, when that happens i use level to make it more balanced.

sorry for the misunderstanding. notworthy.gif

This part is subjective..

I would suggest normal Canon & Nikon to use between f4.5 to f5.6 for group shots.

While FF camera need around f8 to get the DoF

But if you got yourselve the not so popular Olympus dSLR that come with extra-DoF technology (I was told all Olympus SLR has this advanced feature), you only need f2.8 to get the DoF. It basically mean you can almost always use wide open for all shots... thumbup.gif

But be carefull... Althought the Olympus has extra DoF... its autofocus is not reliable in less ideal room light. In that case, I would suggest simply manual focus... No need to view throught the small view finder... agak-agak will do... Remember to take advantage of its high-tech extra-DoF that no other dSLR has... thumbup.gif

Now... Who said Olympus is a funny brand? biggrin.gif

SPM leaver really got a lot of time to spare. I remembered my time where i managed to do some graphic design work from home. Can earn up to rm200 per day...

good luck to you bro, and to your mother also... She would be proud of you by not loitering around, or "rempit"ting around. Kudos to you bro!

Looks like cloud version to me. It works quite well.

D80 replacement shouldn't be long now. Rumours has it that it will be out by summer. But most probably in Photokina in September la i think.

in terms of improving lighting, lambency can help in high celling or low lighting situation... i've tried direct flash+lambency+white top cover, no harsh effect... also tried with zero light, can light up a room(half the length of a shoplot)...

too many speculation... some say may have, some say may not... read some where that d80 product life cycle has come n go, yet no replacement has been spoken of or leaked out... speculated spec was 920,000 pixel 3" lcd, same cmos i guess(12MP), cut down of the 51 auto focus sensor, active d-lighting, back to 1/8000 shutter speed maybe... look at it again its almost like d300... correct me if im wrong... sweat.gif sweat.gif

OK let me start first...

after you buy your a350, sell me your SB-600. Then, i will DIY both SB-600 into umbrella strobes and triggered them via commander mode. Pay sofea to be the model, and make you and your new orange toy nose bled...

come on, D40 too limited meh?

i don't know so much about sony league smile.gif

you got strong point there... I also need to struggle a bit with my D70 5 AF points...

@diablo69

sometimes compose>focus>focus lock > recompose won't work especially in high pace situation (weddings, birthday party, etc) where your subject tends to move around. If using small aperture (f8-10) it wont affect much but if aperture is wide open, u can get blur face or worst OOF.

well my case works fine coz wedding ma... not really face... most of da time slow n steady... if i need better compo, crop tool helps alot... depends on situation n wat u use ur camera for... laugh.gif laugh.gif

The 4th picture, I would prefer to have more space on the left so that her hand won't be chopped off tongue.gif

I refuse to comment because.. ermm.. you didn't comment on mine! tongue.gif Just kidding.

Anyway, nice shots, great candids but the violinist has this permanent "I am shocked" expression on her face. Why ah?

For the singer, if there was a moment when she was singing and the mic is away from her face, that would be a great picture moment. At the moment, I think the mic is blocking. Maybe you can try shooting from the side so that the mic is not so much in her face.

Ooops, terlalu banyak comments. Anyway, good job as I see that you have regained control over your Sony Alpha colours smile.gif

Ahh, now i can comment. Very nice and I am sure the couple will be happy.

My only gripe is with Part 1 - Pic 6 because I don't get it. The mics were largely uninteresting and since you chopped off the facial expression, I am not sure what to interpret from that.

And Part 3 - Pic 2 because the silhoutte because it is not a clean silhoutte. The light from the window revealed a bit of details on the face.

Lol thats my 2 cents smile.gif

The wall, i want to try a composition that looks like someone is peeping through
the door and see whats the fuss inside the bride's room.

Alrite, the headless shots. that one was really really really on purpose.
I tried 3 shots to get that, seems like i got too many ( almost identical ) shots
with the heads on tongue.gif so i tried half of the bride's face just let the viewer know
there's more to it smile.gif err, i hope you get what i mean tongue.gif

Right side? biggrin.gif must be the girl's tudung.

Thanks goldfries. whats a UWA?

i answered that on goldfries biggrin.gif
maybe its just me, i liked that photo very much.

yeah, i was in a dilemma whether to make it a clean silhoutte or lose some and add some facial features, its like im trying
to catch the lights on the bride's face.

Thanks Zio! sorry i cant take you with me to the wedding sad.gif its not mine.

part 1

2. cant see the bride's face...
3. the wall is too distracting...as goldfries said, it looks flawed
5. the face took up too much space(approx 1/3 of the image)
6. the face chopped off O.o cant find the subject

part 2
1. its nice but i think your exposure a lil bit on the bright side..
2. i like this one biggrin.gif
8 an 9 nice smile.gif

part 3
1. OOF i think, you focused on the brides tudung instead of the groom's eyes
2. the brides tudungs jewellery looks like dead pixels sweat.gif and its a lil too dark also
3. very nice compo...maybe can adjust the curve a bit so that the picture can be more punchy?
5 and 6 drool.gif you captured the moment!!!

ps: these are just MO, sweat.gif you can ignore it if you disagree... smile.gif

part 1
2. Im trying to show the kid's curiousity.

it doesnt mean you have to follow every rule, is it? tongue.gif
if you're keep doing it the right way, for me its going to be a common picture like the rest of wedding photos.
i dont need to show their faces ( sometimes ), because they already know who is it when they got their album.
i hope you know what i mean smile.gif

part 3
1. yes i noticed that smile.gif my bad.
2. lol, i didnt noticed that until you mentioned it tongue.gif good eyes!
3. is this more personal preferences or ... ? because it seems fine from here smile.gif

Here are some of my comments, the photos are great, but I feel they can be even better. Well just my 2 cents la tongue.gif

The focus is on the hand of the make up artist, focus on the girl who is looking at the make up artist would be a nicer candid shot. Who needs to see the make up artist hand in focus, is there anything special about her hand?

3

I like this view, seems like you are peeking into the room biggrin.gif

Anything significant about the mics? Chopped off faces are alright if there is a meaning to it.

8
user posted image
Just curious, the ring is placed on the right hand instead of the left hand?

Too many picture in a picture shot. But compared to #5 this is better because the h/p screen is properly exposed as compared to the on in #5.

The guy's face a little OOF?

Nothing technically wrong with this image but does the bride really want to see an enlarged version of her feet?

5

Crop the top part away, the ceiling with the leaking patch is awful and very distracting. If you can't crop it out, please use the clone tool in photoshop and clone away the patch.

Ahhh Mavik, im glad you're here smile.gif

owkay,

1) I admit, i focused it wrongly. i cant get the focus right because the girl start to noticed when i was going for a second try.
so i guess i post this one as my best catch.

6) This is the part where he said " saya blablabla <insert name> RM200 etc etc" i think it'll better if i caught him with his mouth was opened.

8) seriously, i dont know. All i know just shoot tongue.gif

4) i guess not sweat.gif

5) i think crop wont work for this one, its my mistake for leaving too much space above the couple.

Thanks Mavik, i really appreciate the comments biggrin.gif

wont that more interesting during akad nikah, if you focused both kadi n the pengantin hand "bersalam" rather than the mic.

Shooting flowing liquids is pretty interesting. You can play with low and high shutter to get different effect.

If you want to freeze those water droplets, use fast shutter speed.
user posted image

If you want to have a flowing river to look silky smooth, use lower shutter speed.

that is YOUR preference. can show me yours?

to think of slowing down the shutter,
the water will be blurry and i cant see the fountain texture.

hello there,
for the droplet shots.. i like the freezing droplets but somehow the gold plated background is distracting me..i am having a hard time to focus on the droplets as the golden shiney background is distracting me... just MO biggrin.gif

for that wedding shot, i suggest you try to not clip the highlights too much lor... its a lil too saturated for me... i prefer if the shot was just a WB tweak to make it warmer coz the shot perfectly fine to me smile.gif why fix something that aint spoiled right wink.gif

fixed bold tongue.gif

okay,
wedding shots. Its not what i've done right, but to look good. Its not about sharpness, colors, and details at all. Although i did try to
loose details at minimum. If you noticed i did some Gaussian blurry effect to give it a glow effect. Im trying to make it even better.
