Does anyone here have any experience importing a non-running project car to Malaysia? I am planning to import a complete vehicle that isn't working but comes with complete spare parts. Due to the cost of labor and the fact that I am running out of space to keep multiple cars here in the US, I'm planning to use my student AP to ship one back and having it 'kasi bikin' over there.

You can.... just pay tax.... that would get the vehicle off the docks.... however there's a dateline for you to register the vehicle@ JPJ... and it has to have the same engine and chassis no.<< if different engine it should not be to hard to justify....

Hi, newbie in this forum.

is it true you can bring cars without using your AP? any forwarder known to provide this service?

thinking to bring my Murano back from oz without using my AP.

QUOTE(IpohLad @ Feb 22 2017, 07:07 PM)
What I meant was you don't need to apply AP at all.

This is their replied.

Only apply to full Electric Vehicle. Is your Murano an electric vehicle?

Does anyone know how the Ministry of Finance calculates the CIF? Do they publish an explanation of their calculation methodology anywhere? Seems kinda random

I am not Malaysian, but is in Malaysia on a spouse visa. I would like to find a full English guide on how to and costs of importing personal vehicle to Malaysia. Can anyone help?

I have checked with Custom, and they quoted the import duty, excise duty and GST only accounts for 30% of my car purchase price, so I would still say cheaper than me to buy a car here. But I am unsure how much it would cost to get AP, or any other hidden charges upon importing, as the first post mention tax can be 150-300% of the car price, but now only about 30%. Hope someone can help me. Thx!!

If you qualify.... you could get the AP for free... you need to apply through the ministry of international trade and industry (MITI)

The max tax is 193%....

the older your car, the lower the tax... no age limit for non-commercial AP

Thx, I will check with them.

My car is 3 years old, and 1400cc.
They quoted me the lowest of 30% import duty, 75% excise duty, 10% sales tax
But these percentages are based on CIF, and not the original purchase price, hence the tax incurred is only 30%.

For example, you mention the max tax is 193%, 193% of CIF, or purchase price?
This would cause a hell of a difference, as Kastam estimated my car CIF is only 35k.
My purchase price, if converted to Ringgit, will be 150k.

This is the only confusion. If it is only based on CIF, then I would still say worth shipping it, as it would cost lots more to buy the identical car here.

3 years old would not depreciated by much.... Let's say it retains a ball park of 70% of the original CIF when it was new.

Your effective tax is still around 150%.... 150k x 0.7 x 150%=157.5k... By right the taxes is still slightly more than your purchase price....

Take note the CIF is mostly the Base value of your car before incurred taxes of your original country of purchase... Which I suppose will be less than 150k...

You as a foreigner maybe able to get an tax exemption... or that is the standard tax applied to you. The AP that's referred to (mostly) in this thread is the once in a lifetime AP granted to citizens...

30%+75%+10% doesn't equal to 115% but 150.25% because the taxes are compounded... 193% is the top tier tax bracket

I studied two years in UK without owning a car and leaving in one month time, now last minute planned to import a sport car using my student ap. Of course I knew about the rules saying need 9months of ownership and 3months before leaving the country and stuff. But just asking if there's any runner could help me and skip all the checking and stuff for last minute import.
Cheers

tried the search button, didnt work... here goes,

does anyone know if there is a difference when its time to sell?
i.e. someone i know is selling a car which he brought in with a student AP, and now that it is time to sell, will there be any restrictions imposed by customs/banks/jpj?

any insight would be great.

thanks.

Not aware of any new rules.... but 5 year old restriction applies to commercial AP (since a long time ago).... not personal APs...

Using personal AP requires you to stay more than a year abroad (in that country) and own the car for more than 9 months.... otherwise it's the commercial AP which is not more than 5 years...
