Hmm I think UMTS also handle normal voice calls and SMS (perhaps everything that GSM offered). However, there must be a reason for the Dual Mode option exist. I think calls made with GSM only phones cannot be received by a UMTS only phone? I don't think the network can be translated since as your quoted info stated both network are not compatible with each other. I could be wrong, though... hmm.gif
*
Yup, UMTS can handle the same thing like GSM, just for internet/packet data it is with higher speed smile.gif GSM only phone can't handle 3G/3.5G, which means no video call as the speed doesnt allow video conferencing. The reason for dual mode is of course if you want to use VOIP function of your phone (like Sykpe and the likes of it), which is obviously will use internet connection, the faster the connection, the better the call quality. smile.gif

But I always set it to dual mode because I am using 3G esp in KL I always get the 3.5G speed. Not to say if I use GSM mode I can't go online, it's just really painstakingly slow and in the area where UMTS is not available, your phone reception will suck too. I found out about this when I went back to my hometown. At first I thot my phone got something wrong with the reception because my old phone were working fine. Turned out it's because of my settings, hehe.

Mostly related to firmware, just go flash the firmware lo RM30 is really worth it. Mine also AP and go flashed, it's working very well. Oh yeah guys if you want to check if your AP set is original Nokia phone with correct IMEI, try register at My Nokia, it should identify yours is a N95 8GB with just IMEI numbers.
*
Hehehe, already registered with no problems smile.gif My AP set is original Nokia phone with correct IMEI, teheehee.

where did u get this info  rclxub.gif
*
From my post, I got it by googling what is UMTS. Also based on my experience. smile.gif These 2 network is incompatible with each other in a sense that you need 2 different phones to use these two protocol but some phones have dual mode like our Nokia N95 8GB. In lament term, UMTS phones are what we call 3G phone. nod.gif
So, if you have only GSM phone, you can't use 3G service, you have to have 3G enable phones, that is usually a dual mode phone.

FYI, there is no differences between the firmware that you get through NSU and the one you get from Nokia service centre and the successful rate is 100% if your phone is original and you don't screw up the updating process. I wouldn't waste the 30 bucks if I were you.
*
Well, you can do yourself thru NSU of course and it's not hard, just follow thru the instructions. But that is if you're updating it normally and your product code has available updates. But like most of the AP set cases, especially the one that is tagged with a particular telco OR product code is not from Malaysia OR your current firmware is not for Malaysia/Singapore (which means you don't have English, Malay & Chinese language)... you first need to change your product code to the one in Malaysia before you can update the latest firmware that is currently available.

It looks simple enough tho, with the Nemesis Service Suite BUT to go through the hassle especially if you never done it before, then I think that RM30 is worth it lor.
But if you buy authorised set, it's not worth to pay RM30 la since you can update the firmware without much hassle with NSU smile.gif IMHO.

I think they have better accessory for N95 8GB. Anyway I just bought the casing like lildiana posted, haha. It is for the old N95, it fits, not really nicely...but can la for the time being... I really cannot tahan the fingerprints... at least this casing it stays in, dont have to take out the phone tongue.gif I nearly dropped my phone AGAIN when i wanna take out from my old pouch... my heart nearlly stop beating, aiyoo... sweat.gif

download fring. From www.fring.com
The application integrate skype, u can also use skype out if you buy the credits. It also integrates other messenger like Gtalk, MSN, ICQ...
I have this application in my phone but I only use it for Skype.. i find it a bit confusing if you also include other messenger.

Ok, now I already read, it's in the UK. A friend of mine is coming back in Mac, maybe can ask her...but then I think the one from nokia, specially made for N95 8GB CP 235 is already out. Thanks pigcat for letting me know smile.gif But i bet it is not available yet in Malaysia... but since I'm going to Singapore end this mth, I think I can check out there la... the price shud be cheaper... as usual rolleyes.gif

I am currently using the chapalang N95 casing, hehe. The one flip vertically... made for N95... as I said before, it fits ok.. BUT dont buy it if u're planning to get it!! I scratched the side of my phone, near the bottom pretty bad, hahhaha! The rubber material already chipped out tongue.gif can see the shiny black material, like the front panel already, hehe. So now I just stuck it inisde the casing because if I dont see, I dont care... biggrin.gif

So, PLEASE dont buy this casing... smile.gif I bought it cos I cannot tahan the prints.. hehe... but please invest in a good pouch or casing if you can... I shud have be more patient until I go singpore get a good one tongue.gif but then I am not known for being patient, hehehe.

@littlediana
I think the Martin Fields can get in Sim Lim plaza in Singapore lor.. that place got lot of techie stuff also.. sure got one.

@Ash
Install the coreplayer for watching MP4 movies... the built in real player can play H264 coded MP4... not nice.

Hmm... about that Flash Lite thing we have built in.... if I am not mistaken, we cant use it because not a lot of website is using flash lite yet.. that's why we cant view a lot of websites.. like youtube, those under m.youtube.com is using flash lite version, that's why we can view it. I might be wrong, I already asked someone very knowledgable before but I dont really remember what he said blush.gif All I know the flash lite we have is there for a reason, it will have some benefit to us in them future.

@expresside
Eh your battery fake? Hmm... how to check ah? Mine got the hologram, but better check also la hor? The maximum I didnt charge is 3 days (I take off the charger Friday morn, charge back last nite around midnite) What I did was just take less than 15 pics a day, listen to maybe 5 full songs a day (at average 4 mins each), auto wifi OFF, screen at max brigthness, total talktime and calls I think maybe.... 30 mins max for that whole 3 days... no GPS, a bit wifi on Friday nite, like 10 mins... and last nite watched 30 mins of movie before the battery ask to recharge... not bad eh? I think it can really last a lot longer if you just use this phone for calls and text. tongue.gif

Oh, regarding the Nokia CP 235 casing, it's pretty cheap wor in Singapore... I saw in Harwarezone Singapore, Nokia Suntec is selling the Cp 235 at SGD28 only!

Hmmm someone also said the N95 8GB fits nicely in Moshi iPod for Video Pouch... but then it's a bit expensive, like SGD35.95 (Bugis shopping mall).

Heheh... you all better buy in Singapore leh... hahah!

Hehe I posted the similar link for you earlier... laugh.gif

You can check out the seller's other item, he seems to sell the whole housing too, but, roughly RM300+- for full housing...Maybe the seller sell expensive lo... blink.gif

Hmm did you had your network remained dual mode? Your battery life seems to be even longer than mine...Mine only can achieve more than 3 and 1/2 full day with GSM only, going to test with dual mode again... laugh.gif
*
Well I actually dont need to change the full housing. I saw from the same website the camera lense and the whole back cover (minus the battery cover) are about £28 including postage (this is to post in UK address price). That is quite cheap I think... I only need to change this 2 parts, the rest of my phone is still scratch free, hehe. Would save a lot of money if ask a friend to buy there and bring back la than u buy from here, postage will be more expensive than the item bought, haha!

Hmmm, I think the better your reception coverage, the longer your battery will last? Hmm.. let's look at it by logic tongue.gif
If you put dual mode the phone doesnt strain to get either reception, if cannot this and then use the other one...
while if you only put 1 mode (either GSM or UMTS), the phone has to work a bit more scanning the reception? Cos it only uses one?
Hehehe, dunno la, this one is not back up by any technical explanation la, me clever2 think logic only. biggrin.gif
But I also wonder how come my battery can tahan la... but as you see, I don't fully utilise the multimedia functions of the phone for the last 3 days, I believe the battery will last very long if you dont use the multimedia function so much... the screen brigtness, dual mode etc is insignificant in battery consumption, IMHO.

@Ash
Yeah I think in Malaysia they don't have the spare parts yet. The one I saw is from UK. Either I asked a friend who is coming back to buy OR I will check in Singapore when I go there end this month. Maybe in Singapore already got, they are pretty advance in techs anyway. The casing you were asking to buy bulk, maybe shud check out the ori Nokia casing in Singapore lor... it shud not be more than RM100 even after conversion... hmm.gif

smile.gif Heheh, you bought from Avaxx right? Or isit AP set? If you bought from Avaxx, seemed like you are the first Avaxx set owner who has the 90 days free voice navigation trial! smile.gif What region you have?

Mine is Comsat AP set (happened to get a Singtel set) and I have that 90 days free license for South East Asia Region.
Any AP set owners who has 90 days navigation license for free out there, your free navigation license shud be from which region your AP set comes from.

QUOTE(pigcat @ Dec 3 2007, 05:50 PM)
Hmm after more readings about the UMTS and GSM, I interprete it in a way that the phone will not connect to both network, when in dual mode, the phone will fetch the 3G network as priority, then will switch to GSM when 3G is weak/not available. So in dual mode, the phone should consume more power IF the reception is unstable and constant flipping between both network. So it might be your area has very good reception and stayed on only 1 network most of the time. I could be wrong though but I live up on the hill where phone network often weaker than normal so maybe in dual mode my phone will consume more power to switch between both network constantly. That said, that's just my interpretation... hmm.gif

Anyway I think mine also powerful enough to last, I forgot I actually had the phone fully charged at 3am of thursday night (that is, 3am of friday), then only left 2 bars last midnight (which is around 70 hours), and finally the battery drained off and totally empty this noon 12pm with several photo shots, 10 mins of video playback, as well as 10 mins of WiFi.  laugh.gif
*
Ah! I think that shud be correct interpretation smile.gif Yup, I live and work in areas that falls under 3.5G coverage smile.gif The places I go over the weekend also under this coverage so that shud explain it! nod.gif

@yhuii
Well, it depends.
If you don't fancy or don't care about the extra processing speed, a little bit bigger screen, extra battery juice and the fingerprints magnet black casing... I think getting the old Nokia N95 is good enough. The old N95 is already a good phone IMHO. It's all about preferences actually when you buy N95 8GB. Frankly, if I already buy N95 when it was launched last time, I don't think I will upgrade to N95 8GB. But if you already have the budget to buy N95 8GB now, why not buy it... hehehe. It's newer mah! tongue.gif

@minde
I'm on power saving, it is on when your phone is showing the date etc right? In idle mode right?
When I slide during this mode (usually after few hrs at work since don't play phone during work)... hmm... I don't have that flicker you mentioned. My phone straight to show the standby page with pop up said 'keypad unlocked'. Usually only background/wallpaper pic comes first la then all the icons & standby menu, like 1-2 secs delay.
I've seen the flicker once actually during the 1st week I bought the phone but never happened again... maybe cos the phone still new try to adjust to excessive usage? Hehe... try monitor for a while la... if the flicker continues, get your phone checked, could also be from the slider mechanism. When you slide the phone all the way up, there shud be some function underneath the slider that activate the screen to 'ON', flickering cud mean whatever thing under the slider/front panel didn't touch/connect correctly.

Hmm... I still dont get what type of flickering u guys are talking about... hmm.gif You guys have it often? When exactly this happen? I set my power saver time out at 45 secs. The backlights will be off after 5 secs of idle. Maybe I don't see the flickering because my backlight is off first before it starts the power saver mode la hor?
If that is the case I think pigcat explanation cud be right... it flickers because your phone is auto adjusting from high fresh rate to lower, to get ready for the power saver mode and vice versa.

Note:
I tested my phone, I set the backlight of in 5 sec, power saver time also 5 secs. When the lights are going out... the time bar flickered and then off. smile.gif No flickering when I slide open tho. When I slide open, the background comes first, then the 'keypad unlock' message then the icons.

If you go to Singapore and get, their authorised set is called LOCAL SET. The equivalent of AP set in Singapore is IMPORT SET, and like AP set in Malaysia, it is usually cheaper than the authorised set. Like Malaysia AP set, their IMPORT SET could come from Europe, India, Filipines, Indonesia ALSO Malaysia. smile.gif

So a Zitron set in Malaysia is an AP set/IMPORT SET in Singapore. I think currently in Singapore, Nokia N95 8GB is about SGD980 for IMPORT set. The local set/authorised set should be around SGD1000+. Go check it out here: http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/priceguide/...id=100&id=19261

But please note that you can't really make sure from which country it was brought from. It could be from Malaysia or Indonesia or Europe (same case like Malaysia AP set, cant really be sure from where unless you check the product code lor)

Agreed. Dont la buy fake battery, dangerous for you.. also dangerous for your phone. I would suggest to buy the USB charger converter thingy... they shud make the cable to be able to charge also when connected to pc in the first place... sigh. Other phones can make it sure they can also... they just like ppl to buy additional accesories la I think, hehe.

Check this... dunno how much la...

I like this better than buy second battery, so ma fan to change battery all the times... the battery cover also easily spoilt with constant opening and closing.

Well, Coreplayer is NOT cool, it's FREAKINGLY AWESOME! I've been looking for video player that can let you choose just play left or right channel! I was having hard time trying to convert my older video files to just select only one of the audio channel, and this save my ass! Also, the most feature rich player for symbian phone I've ever seen! rclxms.gif

By the way, it seems that this player was officially at 1.1.1 beta, but I was able to find 1.1.2 however only in chinese...missgeek yours is chinese version or english version? I prefer english version, not that I don't read chinese though, just prefer english when it comes to application. If there's no ahem english version then I'll just stick to chinese version. laugh.gif

many also seen this is an advantage for w960 compared n95-8gb... cool2.gif

The lack of touchscreen is indeed a disadvantage to all nseries. But they are coming out with S60 Touch next year... I really hope they come out with phone as great as N95 + touchscreen! Wallau... I will definitely get one.
I like W960 a lot actually... but it is such a let down on the camera department! 3.15MP only! They shud have just put 5MP camera if they really want to compete. Sigh.
Apart from no GPS... but GPS is not that important factor, especially when u stay in Malaysia lah.

But I've to admit... if only this phone comes with 5MP camera, I might have bought that instead of N95 biggrin.gif I am the biggest sony fan before N95, hehehe.
