OK! This is my turn!!

As you all know, I got mine on the 3rd Nov, COMSAT AP set from Singtel. My set is Singapore set, I have English, B.Malaysia & Chinese as writing and phone language. For those who bought from COMSAT but doesn't have Chinese language, that measn your phones are from Middle East or Europe region. Only South East Asia region has Chinese language. My advice, for those buying AP try buy before end this month if not just buy the authorised set then. By end this month, you could even get a recond set sold as new as the phones has been around for a while esp in Singapore and Europe.

I got it expensive compared to the authorised one, I just need to add another RM100 to get an authorised one but since I cannot stand the wait, I got it before it is launched in Malaysia but I have no regrets, to me it's cheap because I really thot the price will be RM3500. Anyway, buying AP especially when you don't have any idea from which country it comes from is really a gamble. I still advice you guys to get an authorised set esp now that this phone is alraedy launched for a while smile.gif

My firmware:
V10.0.021
29-09-07
RM-320
Nokia N95(12.01)

The 3rd party applications I currently have in my phone:

1. Fring
2. Windows Life
3. Google Maps
4. Coreplayer
5. Mobipocket Reader
6. Sensible Sudoku
7. Office Suite
8. Papyrus
9. ScreenSnap
10. Worms 2007
11. Opera Mini
12. Widsets

All my sliders, lights etc etc are working great, no problems (which is also thank god because it's AP you see..haha). My lens cover glass is scratched like hell but it doesnt affect the pic quality since the focus point of the camera lense is beyond the glass smile.gif

The downside of this phone is the THUMBRINTS AND SMEARS. OMG!!!! The reason why I scratch my lense cover is also because I 'polish' it too much, lmfao!

ooooppppssss sorry is not nsu

n s u = nokia softwear updater

nss is the correct one= nemesis service suite

do it with your own risk  sweat.gif ,try to connect to the nsu 1st to see whether the nsu got the n95 8gb softwear ok
*
Yes this is at your own risk. Wrong steps you'll brick your phone. Your AP must come from Europe instead of Asia.
To flash your firmware to the one in Asia, u need to change your product code to the ones in Asia as what eric said. Haha, good luck!

Ah, I assumed this need hardware to do it, no? USB cable tak mentioned... sad.gif
*
This is how to do it it from N95 user in the website.
The instructions to do it is for old N95, but it's the same with N95 8GB anyway, just make sure you got the product code right for the country u want to flash the firmware to.

BUT don't hold me responsible if you brick your phone smile.gif GOOD LUCK!

http://www.nokia-n95.net/how-to-s/how-to-c...uct-code-2.html

Firstly I need to point out that following the below procedure WILL invalidate both your network warranty and your Nokia warranty - you have been warned!

You will need 2 pieces of software for the product code change and upgrade - the are NSU (Nokia Software Updater) which is a Nokia approved product availble from the Nokia website http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4226014 You will also need Nemesis Service Suite (NSS) available to download here http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/software.htm

Once you have these 2 pieces of software installed on your PC we can begin...

WARNING: If you do not follow these instructions to the letter then you could seriously damage your phone, I take NO responsibility for anyone who "bricks" their phone doing this...!

BACKUP YOUR PHONE - The software update will erase everything your your phones memory so you need to back all your pictures, movies, sounds, music etc to your PC. You also need to backup your contacts to your memory card or to your PC.
Plug your phone into your PC (if you haven't already done so) and also plug it into your charger.
I would also advise at this point to disable your PC's screensaver and also set your N95 to the "general" profile.
Now launch NSS - you will see on the right of the screen that there is a section for the product code along with the buttons "read" and "write" - you need to click the "read" button in order to get your current product code.
Write this code down in case you want to return your product code to the original after the update.
Now we need to delete that product code and give your phone it's new "generic" product code... You simple erase the code on the NSS screen and input the new one into the field.

You need to pick the EURO1 product code (if you are in the UK - if not then please pick the product code that matches your country / region) and also make sure that you have the correct colour (don't ask me why!).

Type the new code into the field in NSS and click "write" - job done!
Now you just need to close NSS and open NSU (Nokia Software Updater) and follow the instructions - if you have changed code correctly then you will see your current firmware version AND a new higher firmware version available to download... Once you have started the download process DO NOT disconnect your phone / use your PC or do anything else that might interupt it!
Once you have finished updating you can then go about putting all your settings back to how you like them and putting your tunes back on the phone!
There has been some discussion over whether you should put your product code BACK to your original after the update - I don't think it will do any harm but you need to be aware that if you run NSU in the future you may well find yourself in trouble... You must use the generic product code for all future firmware updates!

It is also very unlikely that your local Nokia Service Center will notice or actually care what you have done... But they just might, so be aware!

I would also advise AGAINST restoring backups of the phone pre-update... A lot of people have restored backups no problems but some have reported problems with an unstable phone afterwards (possible software version conflicts).

Saw the N95 8GB(Avaxx) on the yesterday newpaper..Mention it come with 3 months free voice navigation..But how to activate it?? cry.gif

Comsat or other AP set also come with 3 month voice navi?
*
Yes you can. My phone is from Comsat what... altho I know it's Singtel, it's still from Comsat in Malaysia.
To activate:

1. Go to Maps application
2. Then Option > Extra service
3. Click Add Navigation
4. Then you have to Accept a disclaimer
5. Then just click Purchase
6. Choose the region you want the navigation, it should be South East Asia for us
7. Once u select, it will check for FREE available license

IF your phone has it, you will get a message screen saying:
Trial 3 days
Free navigation license Region X 3 months.

If it is successful, later when you do the same step, it will say,you already have a license for this region.

IF your phone doesnt have the 3 mths free navigation, the message will say, you dont have and you need to buy.

It is stupid if sets from Avaxx doesnt have this. If that is the case, might as well you buy from Comsat, haha.

this isn't properly answer rite? mind if someone clarify about this? I went to the shop and almost bought the phone edi. but then saw that its CSL and the boss claimed that it is the authorised nokia manu. the price is around 2.5k+ So i wanna ask here, is CSL the original set?
*
3 authorised distributor for Nokia is Zitron, Avaxx and iMobile, right?
I dont think CSL is authorised Nokia distributor in Malaysia.

Well, I might be wrong, but if CSL is authorised, that's a cheap price you got!
But if CSL is not authorised, COMSAT AP set is cheaper now... can get for RM2200 I think?

Oh...thanks Kamen Rider for ur feedback...thanks to pigcat as well...
Well u guys tried it b4? Just wanted to know bout the speed only...56k modem faster or 3g faster tongue.gif
Just wondering if use it every night for this purpose, dunno how long will the battery last  hmm.gif  i mean the life span lar...
*
the speed is fast if you happen to surf in HSDPA areas. smile.gif This is one drawback in Malaysia, HSDPA only available in certain areas in Klang valley, mainly PJ and KL.
So, if you happen to stay in area in which only Edge or GPRS available, then it is as slow as a dial up.

I dont think it will affect the battery life span (but it will drain it pretty fast) because the USB is not acting like a phone charger too. They should do that way really, other phones is able to charge when u plug your phone to USB liow. So in terms of life span, I dont think it will affect lor, unles u also put ur charger in at the same time. I was told that it is better to charge the battery when it's empty(or beep already) instead of charging it all the times.

But dont know la... hmm.gif

- wrong pigcat...missgeek hp is a comsat AP set...and better still...she's the only one here that received the 3 months free voice navigation...i think it's because of her set is from singapore.
*
Ok, lemme show you the screensnap of the navigation license I had. I already activated it... the reason I have it cud also be that my phone is from Singapore because if you check the hardwarezone sg, all N95 8GB users could have the free 3 mths navigation nod.gif Maybe you guys shud just try it and see if it works for your mobile.

First go to your Maps application, once it loads press Option > Extra Service
user posted image

Then choose Add Navigation > Accept > Purchase (Don't worry, you are not purchasing when you do this)
user posted image user posted image user posted image

Then select Region, I choose South East Asia. When I choose a pop up already said I already have the navigation license for this region.
user posted image user posted image

So I try other regions for example for you guys. (In you guys case, click the South East Asia region, and a page with all the license, period and price will appear) Click Option > Update
user posted image user posted image user posted image

In my case, I already activated my upgrade, that is why I got this.
user posted image

When the first time I did it, instead of above, the screen said that I'll have 3 days trial and 3 mths navigation upgrade. I just click OK and then I automatically got the 3 months voice navigation. I know I dont pay anything because I am not asked to confirm payment etc.

TRY LAH! nod.gif

I think a lot of ppl already got the N95, it was only 7 mths different when they launch N95 8GB, I think a lot of N95 users dont upgrade.

QUOTE(holycross)
if i want to navigate in china..do i need to download only the map in the nokia map loader or download the voice also?

U mean in china u want to use the GPS? U need to download China map first via map loader, if you don't the phone will use your data packet to download. Will cause a lot of money wor... the map is in MB size.

The voice navigation is with license. You need to buy the navigation license for China region to be able to use the voice navigation. If you dont, u can stll navigate, just that it will be like normal maps with directions.

QUOTE(xpresside)
i still dun get it.......... noooooooooooo

Hmmm, I don't know la like that. You guys sure Malaysia authorised model can get the 3 mths free license e ah? But then... if your phone is AP from Europe, maybe the navigation license if for Europe region lor?

QUOTE(pigcat)
guys i just updated my phone firmware and now i can type chinese! Region was 68.01 and now same as ash 12.01!

However i got one problem now, it seems that the chinese dictionary has missing database, which was the same when i got my E70's original memory card formated then i was like wtf cannot use anymore...looks like i need to look for the malaysia model's flash memory content.

Anyway i'm really happy now...just left keypad and i'm done...

Hehehe... Good good. The chinese dictionary can be downloaded from Nokia website mah.
Your keypad dont have the chinese strokes is it?

If you're transferring using "data transfer" mode...PLEASE eject from windows...if from PC Suite...i have no idea...i normally just unplug it when finished...so far no error or glitches..
*
Yup, data transfer mode, use the windows eject la, until it said safely remove device. Via PC suite i also just take out, hehe. So far no problem.
But if your phone hanged or u feel something is wrong, it's best if the phone restart itself than you have to switch off or worse take out the battery top make it off.
So, it's a good thing of your phone auto reboot when it starts to confius itself. nod.gif

Hmm, xpresside... You have Tagalog as language option? Yours shud be from Asia region, cud be from Filipines... but I am not sure if filipines shud have the 3 mths free navigation. Eh, only mobile from Singapore got ah?

Yeah just the keypad (no stroke symbols) so if i had the keypad replaced with the original one then i have a fully converted original set. thumbup.gif

Regarding the dictionary i'm not sure cause it used to be a hidden data and i think they change the format and make it downloadable via website. I'll check it out, thanks for the tips! biggrin.gif

I've asked the nokia people about keypad replacement, they can do it but they don't sell it, so it's either bug comsat to replace it or let nokia replace but warranty void. I'll use the phone for a while first then only see if it need to change.

By the way i been to pavilion today also, and been to the nokia store. I've played around with the original N95, i was so suprised how bad the slides was, when in the middle position the upper part doesn't fit snugly, you can press and the edge and you can actually press down 0.5mm further!! Thank god mine very solid! thumbup.gif
*
Hahah, pigcat... your nokia is ORIGINAL mah! Of course Nokia made it, not some China chaplang model... only it is not to sell in Malaysia smile.gif I am sure your phone is very very original, nod.gif

The only plus point buying authorised Malaysia set is the warranty mah. That's why if buy authorised got slider problem not to worry can go change, but AP set has to select carefully wor, cannot change change like that.

Pigcat, mine is with Chinese strokes, and I dont even use Chinese, haha. If we exchange, we will void the warranty. I don't have issues with the warranty because I'm pretty sure my phone works as fine. I thini it'll only rosak if I drop it on the floor or drop it in toilet bowl, hahah. Take pic show me your keypad, I take mine and show here biggrin.gif

Jz a quick question, what's the difference btwn Opera Mini and Opera Mobile?

Opera Mini is free but Opera Mobile is not free, both also runs on Symbian S60. I just dwnloaded Opera Mini on my N95 8GB, browsing is much more better than the built in web browser.
*
Yup, with Opera mini is better smile.gif I agree. Altho the built in web browser is used most of the times with other functions.
Another cool one is GoYahoo Mobile, but they don't have it for N95 8GB yet, I'll install that when it's available. A friend of mine who has N95 said it's better than Opera Mini.

Regarding the difference between Mini and Mobile, apparently, Mini is a java application that runs on MIDP 1.0 and 2.0 smile.gif Opera Mobile runs on the handset (just like the built in web browser) and Mini is a client server solution. I think Mobile is better because you can make it a default web browser I think, so that other functions will use it for browsing too instead of the built in. But then, it's not free lor, unless someone could find the cracked version biggrin.gif

Here read this, the difference between Mini and Mobile: http://jp.opera.com/products/mobile/brochures/OperaMini.pdf

Thank you guys for the tips on ejecting the phone! I think I mistaken that there's no option to eject via windows I think I was in PC suite mode and no option so I assumed Data Transfer also don't have lol. I'll look deep into it! biggrin.gif

@missgeek - haha I did mean looks like authorized unit, of course I'm pretty sure that my N95 8GB is very original. I'm very fussy mah blush.gif . Sometimes when you want something you usually cannot get, and when you don't want then the sky will fall one for you. tongue.gif

Anyway how much you bought yours? I think mine is Philipine or Indonesia model thus no chinese support. I think mine is working very well now and I don't think it'll fail in a short period, but cannot say so soon lo (touch wood touch wood). For RM2300 I couldn't really ask for more haha... laugh.gif
*
Hahaha! I bought it expensive, when it is still not launched here, it was just launched in Singapore for 1 week, I think that is why I could get the Singapore phone. So I bought it for RM2750, hahahahah! And it's an AP set somemore! But then, it looks like authorised lor... since it's from Singapore mah. But no regrets lor... so far it works very good smile.gif

Hehe, like you also... if I want something, I must get it or the sky feel like falling on the head, hahahaha!

Why you scratch the lense? I dare not touch during use lol and also the back cover can really catch the grease on my hands. One tips for you guys, if you ever found some shiny spot due to oils but simply cannot wipe off, don't panic, use a sticky tape to stick the spot and take off and voila! Done... laugh.gif

Yeah pity the picture cannot get any bigger, my gf SE phone can have bigger one. sad.gif

Heheheh, I scratched it because i wipe it, HAHAHHAHHAH. The only thing I am thankful is, it doesnt affect my pics... because the focus point is beyond that glass cover biggrin.gif but still annoying lor, look behind can see the scratches biggrin.gif

yeah lor, so far I know only SE phones default big photo ID, my old Samsung D900, I need to get the picture in 240 x 320 size before it can come out big. rolleyes.gif

if original new set u will see the box will wrap with plastic everything inside also wrap with plastic.
last time i bought n73 from aussie was like that, here dunno even tho it's from ori distrib but still doesnt look new

Xpresside,
Do u know what is the 3rd party software for bigger photo ID? I heard we need to use 3rd party application for it, can let us know ah?

Well on the AP, it depends... if your AP distributor buy it from a dealer in Singapore for example... the IMEI on box and phone cud be the same, just the box is opened box because ur AP distributor needs to put the warranty sticker mah.

BUT on most cases, the box is different, that is why it is not really adviceable to buy AP cos your phone can also be a recond set. And that is why for older model phones, better buy ori la... some more price also already cheaper mah.

p/s: Sometimes ah, I think la... the ori distributor can tipu... possible or not? sweat.gif

Yup! But make sure u backup ur phone first ah! If you use the pc suite that comes in the box... to back up, use the content copier.
I back up everything including my 8GB memory cos me lazy wanna reinstall all applications back etc etc... which is so slow if u have a lot of stuff already. tongue.gif That's why memory card easy, just take out only.

After you back up EVERYTHING, then run the software updater. Make sure you plug in also ur charger, just incase ur battery not enough, u gonna screwed the firmware update smile.gif

CORRECTION

U can just backup ur phone memory, no need back up ur 8GB memory also can. smile.gif

Is your phone AP set? Depending on which country and which firmware..
What is ur current firmware? Your region?

This firmware update is for:
V10.0.021
29-09-07
RM-320
Nokia N95(12.01)

Sometimes, if AP set let say from UK, and branded by Vodafone, the firmware update bit slow, because Vodafone usually get the update first, modify it to their liking and release it, always 2-3 updates later than the unbranded phones. I havent checked mine... tongue.gif Mine is also AP, but I know it's from Singtel and ppl in hardwarezone singapore who got from singtel also can update, so I expect mine can update lor.

p/s: If your phone is AP and not from this region, u can flash the firmware to be this region like pigcat did. smile.gif

So sieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnn! I ANGRY NOW LIKE MAD WITCH!!! vmad.gif
Wanna cry also. I CANNOT UPDATE MY FIRMWARE!!! @%$%%$#^#

Sigh. How come? sad.gif I have the strongest feeling that the Singtel branded phone also lock the firmware. Like Vodafone UK. Altho the it's SIM FREE, the firmware is always branded to the telco. Sieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!

cry.gif

Maybe I shud flash my firmware, change the product code and get the one for Malaysia, right?
I actually tried using Nemesis, but it can't detect my phone... do I need special cable??

Pigcat, you went to NCC right? They accept non warrantied phone? How much did they charge you?

HELP HELP HELP HELP!! cry.gif
