Tactically it started with crimea since that base is an existential necessity for their navy. Then in order to secure the land bridge to crimea they must secure the donbass.

Before you want to push your narrative that Russia government is bad. Look at what happen in history. The reason is that it was due to WW2. Russia and Ukraine and previous country under Soviet has all the same ratio of male over 65, because they sacrifice to fight world war 2 against Germany.

Russian conscription age used to be up to 27 before changed to 30 in 2024.
