MyKad for RON95 subsidy as it worked well for Sara, says minister

Finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan says the identity card, which every Malaysian possesses, was used effectively to disburse cash aid.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government decided to use the MyKad in the implementation of targeted subsidies as it was effective in disbursing cash aid under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) scheme, finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said.

He said rolling out the targeted subsidies with the MyKad was more “efficient and inclusive” as every Malaysian possessed the identity card.

“The finance ministry is in the process of creating a system where we can use the MyKad to manage the subsidy rationalisation,” he told reporters after launching a Malaysian Institute of Accountants conference here today.

Amir said the next step would be to ensure that those in need receive the appropriate level of support, with the Cabinet expected to discuss the matter.

He also said the qualifying threshold for subsidies would be raised to widen coverage and ensure more people benefit from the scheme.

The subsidy rationalisation is expected to be implemented in the second half of the year.

Amir was previously reported to have said the mechanism for implementing the targeted RON95 subsidy will involve a two-tier pricing system, possibly using the MyKad system.

Over the weekend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim proposed excluding the wealthiest 5% of the population from receiving the targeted RON95 subsidies.

there is no perfect system. they sure can refine the system later, it's much better to implement something and tackle the shortcomings later. cos no point having big plans and perfect every little detail without user feedback. that would just lead to analysis paralysis

there will always be trade offs

as much as i dislike annuar ibrahim for his hypocrisy (like working with bn, condemnation of homesexuals when he himself is convicted, macc head tenure extension, palestine...), taking steps to scrap the subsidy system is at least some progress. better than doing nothing and there is no popular way to do this

there's no special terminal for you to slot in MyKad to use under SARA, the outlet has special app where the cashier manually key in details of the buyer

MyKad readers only held by government bodies eg. JPN, KWSP etc.

I can sense many will open kiosks beside the petrol station.
Earning commision per pump:

fill up below RM50 - charge rm5
fill up from RM50 to RM100 - charge rm10
fill up above RM100 - charge RM20

That is just a small drop in the big scheme of thing.
Right now people can smuggle lorry full of fuel. Now they can put a cap on how much each IC can pump with subsidy.
Still alot of savings to be made.

You remember during PH1.0, this was the recommendation coming from the cabinet (or was it one of the ministries? I forgot), but then it got vetoed by Mahathir who told Azmin Ali to find a way to do it and then a contract was given out to some consulting company to find a way to do it instead of just implementing this mykad way and then the government fell so all that money was wasted and nothing was implemented?

its a good and simple system though, just do it. Have to see also if someone driving some new S class and pumping subsidised petrol then need to send them to LHDN to be audited.

Wouldn't it much easier to tackle those lorry at the borders than to implement this IC checking thing nationwide?

It shouldn't be unlimited lah, something like RM250 of subsidized petrol allowed per month.

Simple way to close all this loopholes. In fact RM250 is too much also, I never reach that much consumption in a month ever in my life.

You're asking a difficult to answer question, if catch lorries, scare will end up catching one of the ministers relatives. I don't think the subsidy siphon is done by small timers, looking at the amount of money stolen.

Better to inconvenience everyone right? Meanwhile I'll need to borrow ICs from rempits sitting beside petrol stations to fill up my alphard.

To me it's much more feasible than the nationwide IC checking solution. Singapore border already doing the petrol check on ALL types of vehicle.

T10 ada driver. Driver is B40. syukur pakai mykad driver ada murah. T10 sila naik gaji RM100.

IC aku tak pernah keluar dari wallet kecuali kalau guna untuk urusan bank and any gov agencies.

why so serious.. if a solution is more feasible than another. does it not mean less study need? in Malaysia, study > implementation.. so usually will pick the least feasible solution.. when due is near, just cancel whole thing and then rinse and repeat. if not how work till retire in govt.

On the same time around 10-15 people are queuing just to use the subsidy at cashier counter.

Doesn't have to be, many petrol stations already have their brand loyalty cards. If they want to refine the process, it is just replacing that loyalty card with the mykad.

For apps like setel or caltexgo, I hope they integrate the mykad info directly into the app.

Even if it doesn't happen straight away, it should probably happen once more customers complain.

How many people that actually interested to use the loyalty card?

Some people just come to petrol station, pump and go.

They are not interested with the useless loyalty card. I'm one of them.
