The number of students from China applying to study in Malaysian universities grew by 25% last year, driven by a shift in global student mobility. Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) said international students, including from China, are shifting away from the world’s ‘Big Four’ study destinations: the UK, US, Australia and Canada.

“More students are exploring dynamic and diverse destinations across Asia. Malaysia is one of the top destinations,” it told The Star.

EMGS, which is under the purview of the Higher Education Ministry, said its data shows that students from China continued to top the list of study applications to Malaysia, at 33,216 in 2024, compared to 26,627 applications in 2023.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s melting pot of cultures and its inclusivity made it a top study destination for students from China, besides the affordable fees and top-ranked universities. Wang Wenting, 23, from Qingdao, a coastal city in eastern Shandong, said she chose to come here for all that and the warmth and diversity of Malaysian society.

“The multicultural environment here is very inclusive. For example, in my Theatre Production programme, I had lecturers from Malaysia, Singapore, the United States and other countries, each bringing unique global perspectives to our learning.

“This diversity enriches my academic experience in ways a single cultural setting cannot,” said Wang, a Bachelor's degree student at Sunway University.


A lecturer in China and PhD student at Universiti Malaya 40-year-old Xiping Wang encourages more students to come to Malaysia for their post-graduates studies.

She said the friendly Malaysian community also made it easier for her to adapt as she experienced a vibrant mix of cultures.

“It feels like home away from home,” she said, adding that she was keen on gaining professional experience in Malaysia’s creative industries.

Yan Yunpeng from JiangXi province said the lower tuition fees and high-ranked Malaysian universities attracted him to pursue his Bachelor in Arts and Social Sciences degree here.

“Universiti Malaya's position as among the top 60 universities recognised globally in the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS-WUR) also gained my attention," said the 18-year-old.

Yan said the climate, multi-language and multiracial environment in Malaysia also created a unique appeal to him, adding that his course mates were also very supportive whenever he faced problems.

“It is very convenient to get around the city in a bus, train or e-hailing service. We have visited various spots in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

Lecturer Xiping Wang, 40, said she encouraged her students to pursue their post-graduates’ studies in UM, having pursued her PhD at the university herself.

“The academic environment at UM is excellent with competent supervisors," she added.


23-year-old Sunway University student Chen Yulin from southern China, said she enjoys Malaysia's quality education, warm weather and moderate cost of living.

“I am also assisting other China nationals to learn English and to study and live in Malaysia,” said the third-year vocal performance student at Sunway University.

Depends how it's delivered. My kid study internationl school 80% from prc. 1st day all cannot speak. Within 6 months all turn out pretty good really. Coz teacher said no Chinese words except mandarin. But did sure this is primary school.

I believe not yet. MY still have no clear pathway to PR or citizenship for foreign students or foreigners even living here for long. So cannot work to local companies after graduate here. Probably a good things to protect local.

I know a Chinese girl who come here to study English Language so she can balik china teach English. I have friends who is same course as her. Nobody wants to pair with her, and it's already her 4th year. Her coursemates already graduated a year ago.

Best part? She just took a break so that nobody knows of her reputation. She decided she want balik china and skip 1 semester cuz she don't like the food in Malaysia

Angmoh unis sure not better la. Now China unis top the rankings. It's just that their gov didn't build enough unis for the people and forced the ccp high ranking officers' to send their kids to study overseas only

I've met a few and all of them can write and understand but cannot speak. They already learn it as second language in high school but lack the conversation practice.

Nobody is saying US and UK still have the best universities but it does not mean that there are no good universities in China

As for XJP daughters, being the daughter of a high Chinese official (provincial governor at the time), it is easy for her to get into Harvard. The equivalent Chinese school will be Tsinghua University, where she has to beat close 10 million student in gaokao exam to get in. The level of difficulty isn’t even remotely comparable.

Also, in late 2000s, the Chinese were still harboring illusions about US. Remember, this was before Obama’s pivot to Asia.
