Their best universities are limited even though they have already had a lot of universities

The competition to enter their best universities are intense and only the real best can enter

The biggest problem is their population is way too big to accommodate everyone for the best universities in China

The number of Gaokao students every year is close to 13 million. Their best university, Tsinghua only can accommodate 60K students

As for the richer people in China, when their kids can't enter their best universities, they will send them overseas instead of sending them to the local less good universities

Nobody is saying US and UK still have the best universities but it does not mean that there are no good universities in China

As for XJP daughters, being the daughter of a high Chinese official (provincial governor at the time), it is easy for her to get into Harvard. The equivalent Chinese school will be Tsinghua University, where she has to beat close 10 million student in gaokao exam to get in. The level of difficulty isn’t even remotely comparable.

Also, in late 2000s, the Chinese were still harboring illusions about US. Remember, this was before Obama’s pivot to Asia.
