Taxi in KK is ridiculous expensive. From KK airport to town takes only 15 minutes but taxi fare is RM30. From KK market to my house in Jln Gaya (takes only 10 minutes) they asked for RM20. Taxi is not the best option for those who are budget travellers. Transportation around Sabah are not as good as in Peninsula. For outsider how would they know they need to go to main bus station in Wawasan to Inanam bus station??? Their system works like this. All town buses must stop at Wawasan Bus station. From there they will have to take buses that plying around KK town. Say, if I want to go to Inanam from Wisma Merdeka in KK town, I have to take the shuttle bus from Wisma Merdeka to Wawasan Bus station. From Wawasan Bus station I have to take town bus to Inanam. Time consuming and not pratical at all considering Inanam is only about 30 minutes away from KK town.
Then from Kinabalu Park to Poring. Their internal transportation networking is also not good. Very time consuming. Pity to those who have limited time in KK.
My advice?? Rent a car.
Well for tourists surely I will recommend them to take a cab, as its safer relatively if compared to taking the bas berhenti-henti, at least they won't get on the wrong bus or being dropped off at some unknown location..

Looks like island hopping is much convenient. Renting a car alone is already RM120 perday :'(
Btw i found that this site is offering packages to Mount Kinabalu Park
http://www.go2borneo.com/tour.php?browse=product&pid=1 Mount Kinabalu Park Tour & Poring Hot Spring (Day Trip) RM190
The same site also offered ferry ride to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park for RM45 return.
Do you think the price is reasonable?
For the boat ride to TAR Park you can buy the return ticket yourself at the Jesselton Point jetty, it costs<RM30 return ticket, be sure to mention which island you wanna go..
The package to Mount Kinabalu Park is a bit expensive in my opinion, and quite rush too..
I am assuming you will be staying at a backpackers hostel, some of these hostels do provide transportation services to the airport/bus terminal with minimal charges, some hostels are FOC, who knows maybe you will bump into other backpackers going to Mount Kinabalu on the same day too, probably you can just tag along or share tranport to go there..
