Just to be clear I am the in camp of any physical "discipline" actions are bad.

For me, those actions takes advantage of causing "Pain" and "Fear" to get someone or something to do something that you want.
Sure you may say if you do not do that then they may do something stupid or harmful to themself or others.

But that does not justify you doing those "stupid" or "harmful" actions to others.
However may make it seems beneficial to others.
