yup agree...3dmax is the easiest to learn...easy UI... got the best user reference and tutorials provided with the software...you can start from there...once you complete the tutorials gerenti no hal...

the works that i did (top of previous page) were done with P4 1.6 256mb gforce4 128m...choky at times but still stable...

a decent rig is all you need...software and hardware are just tools...power is nothing without substance...great artist will use whatever tool at hand and make the best of it anyway they can...IMHO...

made this yesterday (got some free time), in 6-7 hours from a simple sphere to completion (lighting, texturing, rendering)

just a simple character modeling, no fancy lighting or anything, n there's only two texture used (the eyes n the scar...)
what u dont see are'nt model.... whistling.gif

rendering : 37 minutes
software : 3ds max 7 , (default scanline renderer)
light : IESsky

not the best, but, yeah.... just, ok i guess....

what settings do you guys normally use, when you want to get the photorealistic effect?
or 3rd party software?
feel free to elaborate wink.gif

my rendering and lighting always turns out looking fake and unrealistic...

they're many ways to achieve PR rendering...the key concepts are...

-Global Illumination/Radiosity
-Skylight/FinalGather/Lightracer
-Image Based Lighting/ High Dynamic Range

try look up in the user reference of your software or try do a search on google or cgtalk...

regarding the settings...depends on your renderer...but basically it deals with "number of photons", "photons energy" and "sampling"...

for me ... as u can see.. most of my render used mental ray as my render... mental ray is the most accurate GI render compared to other app like brazil r/s or Vray.. but the speed is slow...
Mental ray came wif 3d max studio 6 and above.. ( if not mistaken)
i dont really know that my lightning is realistic o not cos my monitor here so dark( despite i rev all my brightness n contras setting to highest)...
if u use scanline... make sure u don light ur scene wif one light only
go do some fake GI... cos u hardly notice a real life place that the shadow are that pure dark if light source is near by..here my 2cents.....

Alternatively, I also frequent this other forum CGMalaysia. Not as active as CGTalk, for sure... but it's a local community.
