Yes I agree, but do you see it transcend beyond that? No, right?
But in malaysia we are hearing strong echos everyday coming out from politicians, without repercussions. So, do they do it in singapore? Hence, the tie, certainly does not do justice to how Singapore as a country in term of that.

You must understand which party stand for which set of people.
All parties in Malaysia are conservative populist,
PAS - Muslim
UMNO - Malay
Bersatu - Rural Malay
GPS - Sarawakian
DAP - Non Malay
Singapore only have PAP which basically ruled with an iron fist and
quickly ISAed the opposition by any means necessary.
Agong is what we need for check and balance (SG has the president),
hence most of the overboard racial/religious issue will be silenced by the state's sultan or the country's King.
Anyone who failed to adhere will be labeled derhaka.
Akmal was silenced by the Agong,
he did his part for the party,
his role was to be the instigator.
where politics will reward loyalty, handsomely.
You can bet that Akmal will rise up in ranks not so far in the future.
You can see similar things to Zahid (he was Youth Leader UMNO who being the scapegoat for Anwar Reformasi)
and Abang Jo (He was the butt of a joke in the local newspaper in late 80s)
When you are not loyal and refuse to play a role, you will be like KJ.
