My in laws house grill rusty after 10 yrs ( mild steel powder coat), planning to change to stainless steel 304 for their apartment. Quoted Rm 3.5K, wtf is this chop head price.?
Anybody installed these 1-2 yrs, these type i dono the market price

Paint ur self, < RM50, can paint 2 to 3 layer so can last longer

The workmanship even more expensive
If you want to skim the price, they can.

The supplier will use low grade stainless steel (grade 200 something)
The welding will be subpar (which it will get rust after few years)

The mild steel feels not sturdy, since already quite old, think change to something more durable and secure

Not really. Stainless steel no issue if kena water.

Only prob is when cincai use soap to clean and did not rinse/wipe off propeli.

Get good paint and brush. Do it. During the painting also buy some beers, or if you drink of choice is tofufah... Chit chat with your children and in laws.


Btw...SS is not forever, some maintenance is still needed. Including polish using autosol...to remove some stain that eventually happens.

It's seem an indoor grill. No need stainless steel. Just make sure it's properly painted. Then will last very long time.

Use mild steel but spec thicker material. Still cheaper than SS.

Assuming SS is stronger than mild steel is wrong. The strength depends on the section size, thickness and also design of the grill.

Also, make sure the sections are fully welded to ensure strength. Some fabricators just spot weld and tell you one inci length of weld can tahan 2000kg. This really tipu wan.

I would rather pay once and have peace of mind until my last breath......if only more things can be arranged like this then life would be more carefree and wonderful

SS gate is very noisy when you try to put padlock. But I suppose that's also an advantage at night when someone tries to break into the house via grills or gate.

If the area you put the grill far from any rainwater splash or environment hazard, a few mm thickness aluminium is also good to last for very long time. It is just most people like metal shiny appearance but aluminium can't afford be consistent be shiny as the oxidize aluminium is the metal core protection.

Bear in mind, 15 yrs later mild steel grill maybe more expensive than the stainless steel price now, with much less quality too

Doubt can install SS grill without any paint if stay in condo coz you would need to follow JMB paint rules...unless JMB close one eye

The mild steel now has lower thickness to keep the price competitive.

Stainless Steel mostly comes from China. Even if they said 304, some is not really 304 but hard to distinguish. Good shops normally stick to specific supplier to maintain quality. Hard to trust other cheaper suppliers for them. This was told to me by the workshop.

I think the price for TS and the door size probably about right nowadays. Probably 5 years ago was about 1.5k, perhaps?

i got an estimate of RM17K for a 20' 8" stainless steel gate. Opted for hiring 2 good painters, buying putty, primer and automotive paint, and lending them my handheld orbital and belt sanders. After the paint had dried and hardened, I coated the lock hasps in plastidip. Was waaaaay cheaper.

In condos, some grills like balcony or yard windows very hard to paint due to limited space and the smells

Correct. Even 304 food grade still rusty..

Low grade like 201 202 430 etc all easy to rust, need at least 301 304 to last long, 316 is best but really rare. Quality also depends on thickness, spot weld vs full weld etc

3.5k can get security door dy , some security door stainless steel one .

Usually they count by sqft but since urs is just one door maybe a bit higher for transportation since they can't transport many at once to save cost. Also depends on your door design la, if like current one OK la, if got close here close there bend here bend there got pattern complicated design it's more expensive.

I did my whole house semi d 2.5 Storey stainless steel grille cost me RM47/sqft around September 2022

Your door I think about 8' x 5'? So 40sqft. But if door only usually will be higher maybe let's say with all the inflations and surcharge transport maybe 60/sqft. That's about RM2.4k lo. Try get few quotations la lol

try to get more quotation and compare it urself. Cheap doesn't mean good. Expensive doesn't mean kena chop

Some ss 304 can become slightly magnetic through cold working...china 304 is not 304 at all and cannot be classified under international standard SUS304/18Cr8Ni. Those stainless steel with strong magnetic most likely is chrome plated steel, which is not stainless steel at all. The easiest way to identify stainless steel grade is using battery + test liquid, or the most accurate way by spectrometer.

why the hell would you want to have a food grade stainless steel for a front gate?

Yes..spot weld is welding at side only, full weld is fill all the gap so water cannot go in when u wash or spray water, else water will trap inside

My cloth hanging that I bought from China, 20 years ago, its still in very good condition. One piece is on balcony and the other is expose outside in our garden. No rusting or fading at all.

China manufacture international standard SUS304 also, big factory usually carve marked their grade. In china there are "normal 304" "non standard 304" etc which u should differentiate from SUS304. If your stainless steel used outdoor that can last long then it must be at least 301/304.
