Been busy furnishing the house in Sydney - and doing day to day shopping. It’s quite fun actually. Not something I would do in Singapore.

To some, this may seem mundane and boring and just another normal routine. To me, it’s actually quite an interesting experience and being semi retired is all about enjoying experiences smile.gif

We have properties over at Lower North Shore and Inner City (near the water). We gave notice to our tenant that we wanted our house in the Inner City suburbs back and that’s the one we just finished renovating (took us nearly 3 years because of COVID!).

Are you familiar with Sydney suburbs?

House better rent out since you are away for most of the time, unless you have caretakers and gardeners taking care of the property or relative/friends staying around the corner, risk getting break in and misc issues from storms, hail, tree fall, etc...

inner city near water that is good would be Concorde? Five Docks are too noisy. Rich usually will go look at the Eastern surburbs.

We have a cleaner that comes in to clean the house a couple of days before we arrive.

We had a unit at Edgecliff but we sold it when the prices skyrocketed. Eastern suburbs are too far away from the places that interest me, so we didn’t go back into the market. Too many private schools and getting into city is a real nightmare via Darlinghurst or Kings Cross, so in the end that was a hard pass for me.

I don’t consider myself moneyed enough to hobnob with the elites at Vaucluse smile.gif

Avoiding Italy on purpose? If you’re traveling on spring / summer months will be nice stopover to Capri and Positano..

Which part of Swiss do you intend to go?

Well, the few times we’ve been to Italy, we’ve walked away feeling less than impressed. Capri was a bit of a let down, but that was probably because we went in winter and all the shops were CLOSED. And this wasn’t told to us by the tour guide so we felt a little cheated that we paid extra for the side trip.

We’ve already done Milan, Pisa, Florence, Rome and the Amalfi coast in the past, and there’s no burning desire to do it again.

In Switzerland, we’ll probably retrace the steps we took as poor(er) travellers some 25 years ago.. we did Lucerne, Geneva, Zurich so we’ll do that again, but hopefully stay in a hotel with Airconditioning and a working elevator this time hahaha.

A couple of months has passed and I’m just that little bit closer to retirement….

And with most things, plans change for various reasons and given the situation in the Middle East and the ongoing deterioration in Europe what with Ukraine and Russia, waifu has signalled that our original plans for the round the world trip should be put on the back burner in favour of a less volatile adventure.

I’m going to scale back the ambition but scale up the opulence… am now thinking of limiting the retirement trip to a few countries in Asia before heading off to New Zealand and ending up in Australia.

I’ll pen my thoughts in a subsequent post but if you guys who are better travelled than me have any suggestions, I’d be very grateful to hear them!

If money is no object, and you're looking for a round the world trip why not a Four Seasons Tour

Otherwise a cruise to somewhere normally unreachable ie Alaska ? cruise Go for Regent or Crystal line for higher end experience or a suite with Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas (largest cruise ship in the world)

Actually that’s my biggest fear of retired life: having nothing to fill my day.

In addition to traveling, I intend to spend my time gardening and growing herbs and vegetables for the kitchen, and also to have good long walks around Ma y of Australia’s national parks for exercise.

Drive to the parks (because I love driving) then walk.

Read books at the excellent public libraries and enjoy watching people go about their hustle and bustle of daily life…

Nurse a cup of coffee while seated at a bistro or little cafe.

I will likely get either a campervan or a caravan and do road trips with the wife - like a grey nomad - around the whole of Australia.

I guess that’s the kind of life I’m looking at, post retirement.

Oh. Finally get down to writing and finishing that book which I started some 20 years ago…

I'm not trying to sound cruel but if that's what you'll be doing post retirement, I will never retire. It sounds like waiting to die.

Oh, I’ll still be practicing… part time, maybe 3 days a week.

So I’m not just about to kick the bucket yet…

LOL. Our helper went over with us as she wanted to see our house and my cars. A lot of the stuff you saw in that cart was for her.

you cam roam seamlessly to any telco at a fixed rate
no hidden charge or bill shock

unlike most plans that only allow you to roam to a certain country or region at that fixed rate

Ah, thanks.

Definitely worth taking a look and compiling that into a folder for retirement's use smile.gif

It too my wife and I 25 years to plan for this day (and that should answer your question - we’re both in our early 50s) and IMHO it’s never too early to plan ahead.

Discovered this thread a bit late, but damn, congrats on your upcoming retirement! You've gained a new follower here to follow along your journey. I'm way too far from retirement age but definitely a source of inspiration now thumbup.gif

Don't think I'm qualified yet to give advice, both financially and age/experience wise tongue.gif but time to pick up your hobbies I guess! Gave myself permission to spend at least a couple of hours on hobbies that interest me amidst my chaotic work schedule, while tiring, but definitely helped to give me a sense of purpose in living life (aside from making moolah)
